Monday 1:00 p.m. Classroom 128 Instructor: Flossie Riesner This will be a continuation of “Problem Solving with Algebra” from winter 2012. The class will continue learning Algebra — essentially Algebra II — to problem-solve whenever possible. There are no prerequisites — one need not have taken the previous course. Just have a basic love of mathematics and a desire to use one’s mind again in a way one may not have in recent years. There will be homework! Grow Your Mental Ability with Algebra Flossie Riesner, B.S., M.S. (mathematics), has been a member of Osher for over four years and is a resident of San Diego. She taught high school and college mathematics for many years before entering the field of dentistry as an office administrator. For the last 13 years she has been traveling throughout the U.S., consulting on practice management with dentists and their staffs. Distinguished Lecture Series Classroom 129 January 14 Diane Kane, Ph.D., AICP Architecture: Modernism and the Non-Western World — A Century of Progress? Architectural Modernism anticipated that mass production and technology would raise universal living standards and out-perform traditional construction methodologies. This lecture includes a lively review of how these ideas have played out over the past century in developing locales from Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Traditional materials and building practices have anchored social and economic interactions. What happens when these sustainable systems are interrupted with abrupt shifts in scale and the introduction of technology and new materials? Will Modernism allow for cultural, geographic, climatic, and social diversity, or will globalization inevitably result in homogenization of our built environment? Formerly a professor in the New School of Architecture, San Diego, Diane Kane has also taught at San Diego State University and the University of Redlands. She has written extensively on historical preservation and served as the president of the Southern California chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians. Her Ph.D. in architectural history was awarded by UC Santa Barbara in 1996. Coordinator: Steve Clarey February 4 Mary Beebe The Stuart Collection The Stuart Collection at UCSD is a unique collection of site-specific works by leading artists of our time, integrated with the campus and its buildings. The project is a cooperative effort involving the University’s Visual Arts Department, the Stuart Foundation, Friends of the Stuart Collection, and the National Endowment for the Arts. This lecture will focus on the project’s 18th and latest addition, Falling Star, installed on the seventh floor of Jacobs Hall at the Jacobs School of Engineering. The artist, Do Ho Suh, expresses Monday 1:00 p.m. his perception of cultural displacement and the need to readjust after arriving from Seoul, Korea, in 1991. This class will learn about the piece’s inception, planning, and installation. Mary Beebe has been director of the Stuart Collection at UCSD since its 1981 inception. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College with a bachelor of arts degree and later studied at L’Ecole du Louvre and the Sorbonne in Paris. She was previously director of the Portland Center for the Visual Arts. Coordinator: Pat Fleming February 25 Irwin Jacobs, Sc.D. Plaza de Panama Project, Balboa Park For decades it has been a civic goal to remove cars from the Plaza de Panama in Balboa Park. In 2010 Dr. Irwin Jacobs, with the encouragement of Mayor Jerry Sanders, underwrote a committee to seek City approval and raise private monies to facilitate this goal. The Plaza de Panama Project was approved by the San Diego City Council in July 2012 and is moving forward toward construction. Completion is targeted for 2015, the centennial of the Panama-California Exposition. The project will construct a new bridge at the eastern end of the Cabrillo Bridge, allowing traffic to continue to access Balboa Park from the west across the Cabrillo Bridge while bypassing the Plaza. The project includes a new underground parking structure topped by a 2-acre park. Dr. Jacobs and the Committee committed to raise $31 million in private funds, with the remaining $14 million to be funded by a self-supporting revenue bond. In this lecture, Dr. Jacobs will discuss the project’s genesis, design features, and public benefits, as well as some of the controversies and other challenges that it has faced. Irwin Jacobs founded Qualcomm and Linkabit. He earned his B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Cornell University and his M.S. and Sc.D. degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
