How did the winner manage to prevail? Will the country see more of the gridlock in Washington D.C. that has existed during the last two years? Did the lame-duck Congress of November/December 2012 succeed in preventing us from going over the “fiscal cliff” on December 31, 2012? Please join this popular political discussion class. Premier Class Monday 10:00 a.m. William Faulkner Classroom 129 Instructor: Michael Caldwell, Ph.D. Coordinator: Christine Sullivan Arguably the most important writer of the 20th Century, William Faulkner created one of America’s most sustained contributions to world-class literature. The breadth and depth of his achievement makes him our American Shakespeare, a writer of exquisite beauty, elegance, and subtlety. This course will examine that achievement in four extraordinary novels: As I Lay Dying; Go Down, Moses; The Sound and the Fury; and Absalom, Absalom. The class will focus on Faulkner’s experimentation with unique narrative strategies, the significance of land and property in his conception of America, his comic and tragic treatment of race, and his rendering of the South as a defeated cultural backwater. Michael Caldwell holds a Ph.D. in British literature from the University of Chicago. He is a multiple award-winning former assistant director of the Revelle Humanities Program at UC San Diego. Currently, he is working as an independent scholar on a number of different projects, teaching parttime at various campuses in the San Diego area, including UCSD Extended Studies. January 14, February 4, 25, March 11 Premier Class Monday 1:00 p.m. World Music and the Search for Difference Classroom 129 Instructor: Professor David Borgo Coordinator: Christine Sullivan This course will offer an introduction to the field of ethnomusicology and introduce traditional and popular music from around the world. It will also investigate the discourse and marketing practices that have surrounded the “world music” category since its inception in the mid-1980s. In addition to expanding one’s own musical horizons, the course aims to provide insight into the complex relationship between musical practices and cultural understandings as they are embedded within overarching dynamics of historical, social, and ecological change. David Borgo is professor of music at UC San Diego with degrees in jazz performance (B.M.) and ethnomusicology (Ph.D). His book, Sync or Swarm: Improvising Music in a Complex Age, won the Alan Merriam Prize in 2006 from the Society for Ethnomusicology. As a saxophonist, Dr. Borgo has released seven CDs and one DVD. He has performed widely, including concerts in Sweden, Holland, Armenia, Hong Kong, Macau, Mexico City, and Sao Paolo. He has appeared as a guest in the Bronowski Art & Science Forum.
