coNTriBuTioN AWArd<br />
Student Council President (2009-2010),<br />
Kim stymest, is the well-deserved winner<br />
<strong>of</strong> this year’s FIAA Outstanding Student<br />
Contribution Award (formerly the Jubilee<br />
Award). Kim received a $500 cheque and<br />
plaque in recognition <strong>of</strong> her influential<br />
contribution to student life, participation<br />
in pr<strong>of</strong>essional organizations, academic<br />
excellence, and publishing. Before being<br />
elected President, Kim served as Student<br />
Council vice-President, and joined the<br />
editorial team <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Faculty</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Information</strong><br />
Quarterly. As President, Kim participated<br />
in <strong>Faculty</strong> Council and Graduate Student<br />
Union meetings, and contributed to the<br />
recent ALA Accreditation Panel. Under<br />
her leadership, the student lounge on the<br />
7th floor <strong>of</strong> Bissell (140 St. George) was<br />
transformed into a welcoming space, now<br />
frequented as both a work and a social<br />
hub. Kim has also been active in librarianship,<br />
with memberships in OLA, SLA,<br />
CLA, and ALA. She convened a session<br />
at the OLA 2010 SuperConference, and<br />
moderated a session at <strong>Information</strong> Access:<br />
Commons, Control, Controversy, the<br />
2nd annual <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Toronto</strong> iSchool<br />

Student Conference. She was also a<br />
poster presenter at the 2010 CLA National<br />
Conference & Trade Show in Edmonton.<br />
Kim’s paper, “The War on Women’s<br />
Bodies: War Rape in the Democratic<br />
Republic <strong>of</strong> the Congo,” will be published<br />
in the inaugural issue <strong>of</strong> the Journal <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Motherhood Institute. She is also a double<br />
award winner this year, having been one<br />
<strong>of</strong> the recipients <strong>of</strong> the Gordon Cressy<br />
Awards. Congratulations to an outstanding<br />

For 2010 NELsoN MANdELA<br />
iNTErNsHiP<br />
Second-year MISt student Lindsay<br />
chick spent her summer undertaking<br />
archival and records management work<br />
in South Africa with the Nelson Mandela<br />
Foundation’s Centre <strong>of</strong> Memory. This<br />
unforgettable internship was supported<br />
by the continued generosity <strong>of</strong> Manulife<br />
Financial, and provides iSchool students<br />
with the chance to gain invaluable<br />
international work experience. Lindsay<br />
worked under the guidance <strong>of</strong> Verne<br />
Harris, considered to be one <strong>of</strong> the<br />
leading postmodern thinkers <strong>of</strong> archival<br />
theory. As a pr<strong>of</strong>essional archivist, Mr.<br />
Harris helped transform South Africa’s<br />
apartheid public records system. “I am<br />
both thrilled and humbled to have the<br />
opportunity to intern with the Centre <strong>of</strong><br />
Memory in Johannesburg,” Lindsay says.<br />
She was excited about gaining “practical,<br />
hands-on experience with records while<br />
preserving the painful history <strong>of</strong> apartheid<br />
and the legacy <strong>of</strong> a truly inspirational<br />
individual.” Motivated by her goal to<br />
promote social justice and education<br />
through historical records, Lindsay<br />
hopes to work as a reference archivist<br />
in a repository <strong>of</strong> Holocaust collections,<br />
“in order to expand research in the area,<br />
maintain the legacy and memory <strong>of</strong><br />
survivors and victims, and to illuminate<br />
issues <strong>of</strong> prejudice and intolerance.” You<br />
