It makes me feel inspired!
‘…It makes me feel inspired…’ sings The Parlotones in their latest hit song, titled “Push me to the floor”. That is how
I feel about 2010. I find a new year (and its new beginnings) always inspiring because it creates the opportunity to
do things differently, try something new or just appreciate the privilege of another year.
This year, I’m feeling inspired by going ‘back to basics’ as part of an effort to achieve an even better work-life balance.
Thanks to ever evolving technology, we are available 24/7/365. Not for me this year, I’m setting boundaries
– switching off my cell phone and putting away my laptop and 3G card for quality family time.
Be inspired by your surroundings this year. Midrand
Estates is beautiful, yet still growing and adding

an effort to, this year, notice and appreciate all the
effort and time spent on creating the best location,
school, security, facilities – the list is endless – to

24 Hour Medical Emergency services now available
The New Year saw the introduction of a quick response medical emergency support service to
Midrand Estates, managed by the local medical practice. The 24 hour contact number for the
service is 072-728-3620.
The general practitioner’s
practice that is located in the
local shopping centre and known
as Midstream Medical Centre,
commenced with the 24-hour
medical emergency service on
14 January 2010 and attended
to the first 3 callouts in the
first few days. The service will
be available to all residents
of Midrand Estates (and their
guests) and will be supplied
under contract with the various
Home Owners Associations. The
service aims to provide quick
response to a medical emergency
by a trained practitioner
with the only condition being
that the patient being within
Midrand Estates at the time of
the emergency – children at
the educational facilities within
Midrand Estates will also be
covered during normal school
hours and activities. (Due
to the additional and specific
requirements at extracurricular
activities a separate contract will
be entered into with the

Practitioners (ECP) trained
to Intermediate Life Support
(ILS) level, travelling in an

in arranging for the appropriate
ambulance – or a helicopter,
if warranted. All services
delivered within the scope of

be covered by the monthly levy
paid by residents to the various
Home Owners Associations.

month for 2010). The cost of the
transport and any other services
that may be needed in addition
to the Intermediate Life Support
scope will be for the cost of the
patient.

Midrand Estates News received the following news from the desks of the various estate managers
within Midrand Estates:
Security record over the past Christmas season
The various managers reported as follows on security for the past holiday season:
• Midstream: No crime, but an incident reported on assault between residents (no further charges
were made) and a charge made at the SAPS against a guard on an alleged death threat – see “tsotsi”-
incident on page 7;
• Midfield: No crime and nothing further to report;
• Midlands: No crime or anything further to report;
• Shopping centre and filling station: Nothing to report
A clean slate was reported for the area as a whole by the HOA Security Department for all the estates and the
shopping centre. The work by the security managers, the supervisors and all the guards is applauded.
Compliance with the HOA
requirements for air-con units,
satellite dishes.
All residents must take note that the HOA
has strict rules with regards to the placing of
external fixtures to a house, specifically for the
air-con compressor units, satellite dishes and
also geysers (both standard and solar geysers).
Prevention is better than cure and all residents
are invited to contact the HOA office ahead of
time to obtain clarity on the applicable rule and
its application.
Re-activation of access control for domestic
workers
Residents should take note that, as a security measure, the
access control for domestic workers is discontinued on an
annual basis and will only be re-activated upon confirmation of
continued employment by the resident. The measure is in place
to maintain an up to date record of non-residents gaining access
to the estates. Contact the security manager at your gate for
more information (See last page of the newsletter for contact
information)
WAG VAN DIE MAAND
Siphokuhle Ngubo
Special mention must be made of a security guard on duty at the gate to Midlands Estate.
The guard Siphokuhle Ngubo has on numerous occasions protected the interest of builders
and owners by identifying potential petty thief’s of building material. In 2009 his actions
lead to 13 people being apprehended and in January 2010 2 further people were identified.
The guard, Siphokuhle, has been awarded the Midlands guard-of-the-month award and deserves
a wave from all the residents.

Report from the Home Owners Associations continues....
Motorcycles – Stay within the law and wear a helmet – it is the
smart thing to do!
It is with concern that recent behaviour by some motorcyclists has been noted, being:
• Driving without helmets;
• Unlicensed motorcycles or drivers without license – thus, no pit bikes, quads
or scramblers;
• Three people to a bike.
Control will be increased in the coming year with the assistance of the Ekurhuleni Metro
Police. Residents are reminded that the laws applied to public roads also apply to the roads
within the estate.

Motorcyclists are requested to ensure that they
stop at the entrance boom gates and gain access
(or exit) to the estate by entering their biometric
print - and not tailgate another vehicle. Whilst
the inconvenience of removing the driving glove
is understood, unauthorised access to a person
hidden behind a helmet cannot be allowed.
MIDLANDS BABY HOUSE – NEW
BEGINNINGS
The second year for the Midlands Baby House kicked off with
a bang again this year. We opened our doors on the 11 th of
January with 46 babies and quite a few teary eyed mommies
and daddies. Many tissues later, parents were sent off to work
and the little ones could
eventually start enjoying their
first day.
The “tsotsi” – incident
Midstream was in the news early January 2010
with an incident reported by the “Beeld” newspaper
where a Midstream resident was quoted as filing
a complaint with the SAPS following an alleged
death threat by a guard using the word “tsotsi”.
Suiker Britz, estate manager for Midstream Estate,
confirmed that the matter has been investigated
internally by the HOA and, for the moment, no
action has been taken against the guard as the
testimonies received from the two parties is
contradictory. The HOA will assist the authorities in
the official investigation and reach a final decision
at the completion of the investigation.

school hall. Not only does it help in preparing for Primary School, but it also develops them and adds to the fun
at school (and for the parents to enjoy themselves!)

uitgeleef word en sy glo dat teen Augustus 2010 sal elke kleuter weet wat sokker en 'n vuvusela is!

Midstream and Midlands Pre-Primary continues....
Lenie Botha and Mariaan Bester, as the owners of both Midlands and Midstream Pre-Primary schools (MLPP &
MCPP) send us the following poem of an eagle-“parent” that induces his/her offspring into the adventure of flying.
Even eagles need a push
The eagle gently coaxed her offspring toward the edge of the
nest.
Her heart quivered with conflicting emotions as she felt their
resistance to her persistent nudging.
“Why does the thrill of soaring have to begin with the fear of
falling?” she thought.
This ageless question was still unanswered for her…….
(Note: A few verses were skipped
in this condensed version)
The eagle drew courage from an innate wisdom. Until her
children discovered their wings, there is no purpose for their
lives.
Until they learned how to soar, they would fail to understand
the privilege it was to have been born an eagle.
The push was the greatest gift she had to offer.
It was her supreme act of love.
And so one by one she pushed them, and…… they flew!

Both facilities at MLPP and MCPP are ready
to allow the young eagles to soar. We are
proud to advise that our facilities have been
accepted by UNISA as an official practical
training facility for students. We will also
be hosting a symposium for heads of Pre-
Primary schools during February 2010.

Achievers at Midstream College Primary School in

Headboy Eduard Bosman, with Hide Bouwer (dux scholar) and headgirl
Robyn Fyvie swept away most of the awards at the annual prize giving
ceremony, whilst the top performers on the sportsfield were Leslie
Stolterfoht and Simone Sibuta and Eliscked de Villiers receiving the cultural
excellence award.
Furthermore 24 of the scholars proved themselves to be “maths boffins”
in the national Maths Challenge by beating 10 000 participants nationwide
to the first place!

Nuwe Graad 8-bakstene bou voort aan Midstream-tradisie
Op Woensdag, 13 Januarie, het ongeveer 150 nuwe graad 8-leerders
hulle hoërskoolloopbaan by Midstream College begin. Hulle
het baie dapper op die maat van musiek die saal binne gehuppel.
Tydens‘n oriënteringsprogram tot 27 Januarie 2010 sal die graad
8-leerders bekend staan as Bakstene. Hierdie “Bakstene” word nou vasgemessel
tot ‘n magtige muur wat deel word van Midstream College se
bastion van tradisie.
Die leerders skryf op 27 Januarie ‘n toets om hul kennis van die skool,
prefekte, onderwysers en aktiwiteite te bewys. Op 28 Januarie sal alle
graad 8-leerders as volwaardige leerders van Midstream College ingehuldig
word.

Die Christelike uitreikkomitee van Midstream
College het op Saterdag, 17 Oktober ‘09
na President Kruger-kinderhuis in Villeria uitgereik.
Die uitreikkomitee het by die weeshuis
in drie groepe opgedeel en saam met die weeskinders
na die verskillende bestemmings vertrek.
Die seuns het hulle innerlike stoutigheid met
paintball by Hennopspark ontdek. Die ouer meisies
het heerlik by Chantelle Maartens se huis ontspan.
Hulle het prettige foto’s geneem en die verskillende
foto’s gescrapbook. Die jonger meisies, vanaf die
ouderdom 4 tot 13 jaar, het na Menlyn winkelsentrum
vertrek. Hulle het “tenpinbowling” gaan speel
en daarna “Water walking” gaan doen. Mnr Ferdi Niemand
en mee Nellie Stanton en Michelle Clark het die
kinders vergesel.
Hierdie was ‘n dag waarop Midstream College se
uitreikkomitee graag die minderbevoorregtes op iets
spesiaals wou trakteer.
Aan die einde van die jaar het die Midstreamraad
‘n projek onder leerders geloods om geskenkies
vir arm gesinne in Danville te bring. Onder leiding
van die Collage se onderwysers, Mnr Ferdi Niemand,
Gustav Pretorius, het van die leerders dit na die Danville
Liggiehuis geneem sodat hulle dit aan die huisgesinne
kan gee.

‘Pilates’ for rejuvenation and functional movement

The new year brings a rare bird to Midstream
The tranquility of the parks in Midrand Estates provided a resting place for a
migrant bird rarely spotted in South Africa on Sunday 10 January 2010 when
it was spotted (and photographed) perched at the top of a tree.
The bird identity was confirmed (from the photograph) by Geoff Lockwood
– well known ornithologist. Geoff wrote: “The bird is a European Honey
Buzzard (Afrikaans = Wespedief) and is a very good record (when
found) anywhere in South Africa. It is listed as a national rarity and
its presence at Midstream is “big” news – congratulations! The species
is a non-breeding migrant from Europe and feeds mainly on bee and
wasp larvae and we usually get the odd records from around Gauteng each
summer.” The European Honey Buzzard has also been described as an elusive
and strangely shaped bird that follows individual wasps back to their
nests in order to eat the larvae!
The sighting reaffirms that Midrand Estates provide a comfortable and
unique habitat for all. Local resident, Drinie van Rensburg has compiled
a bird list with photographs of the birds sighted in Midrand Estates - All
bird lovers and watchers are invited to contribute to the Midrand Estates
bird list by sending in photographs or a record of the sightings. (Note: The

Petstream: Now your one stop vet shop and service in Square@Midstream
The owners of the pet shop at the local shopping centre, will be
relocating their shop within the centre and thereby expand their
facility to a fully fledged veterinary service with a professional
Veterinarian, adjoining pet shop and pet grooming facility. Their
shop opened with Square@Midstream centre in April 2008 and is
well-known amongst the Midrand Estates community.

As the veterinarian on duty a community project was launched in
2009 to manage the spread of feral cats, by trapping the feral cats
and then sterilise, vaccinate and treat them for parasites and then
release them again. The theory being that should the cats be
removed entirely it will lead to an influx of new ferals to claim the
vacated territory. Marks on their ears distinguish the cats operated
on. To date, five females have been spayed and six males castrated,
while ten kittens were tamed, hand reared and successfully rehomed. The Veterinarian says the support – in the
form of donations, assisting with feeding, etc. – from the community for this project greatly contributed to its success.

The way learners at Midstream College saw 2009
The year started with the first grade 12 group leading
the school into 2009. Everybody was excited and
the year started with a bang, as Midstream won the
Inter-High Athletics meeting. Spirit contributed to
the school’s success, united the school and proved
to have a positive effect at our athletics meetings.
(p)Articipate was the cultural highlight at Midstream
College with over 800 entries and the “Circus”
theme of the gala evening showed breathtaking
talent.
We also had a lot of fun: There was a Valentine’s
Ball which had all the pupils looking ‘bright eyed and
bushy tailed.’ A Spring Dance was also organised
by the Midstream Council to celebrate the start of
summer.
The College bid a sad farewell to the grade 12
group as they all struck the gong and hit the road.

Vir die eerste keer het ons skool matrieks! Dit sou maar
een van vele eerstes in ‘n blomjaar vir Midstream College
wees. Gareth Gibson (hoofseun) en Claudine Briedenhann
(hoofdogter) en die res van die prefekte het die
leisels, vir die eerste keer as volwaardige matriekleiers,
goed vasgevat.
Ons maroon-en-teal-leerders van hierdie besondere
skool is gelukkige leerders. Gesels maar met enige een en
jy besef dat daar soveel geleenthede vir elke leerder is om
homself uit te lewe; om elke aspek van tienerwees te beleef.
Daar was die Malhoeddag, die eerste Pannekoekdag,
(p)Articipate, ons skoolhoof se verjaarsdag en veral die
eerste matriekafskeid wat elke leerder saamgesnoer het.
Die spesiale totsiens-sê vir die matrieks het elke leerder
‘n knop in die keel gegee, want elkeen het geweet dat sy
dag ook gaan kom dat hy die die voorreg gaan hê om die
klok vir die laaste keer te slaan.

2010, barely a month old is already in full
flight! This is a year that will be marked as one
with many exciting and special events locally
and nationally.
One such special event is that Retire@
Midstream saw it’s first resident take occupation

Midstream Familiekerk maak deure oop!
“Hoe hoog die golwe ook al slaan, die Kerk van Christus sal nooit vergaan”.
Daarvan kan die Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk in Midrand Estates
deeglik getuig.
Eredienste word al gehou sedert 2007 en het in die teetuin oorkant die skool
afgeskop. In Augusts 2008 het bouwerk aan die nuwe kerkgebou begin, in ‘n
proses besaai met wonderwerke wat gelei het tot voltooing teen Desember
2008 en die eerste erediens in die kerk op 18 Januarie 2009 gehou met die hulp
van dr. Paul de Beer as brugpredikant.
Die volgende groot datum in die gemeente se kort geskiedenis, was 15 November
2009 toe die Midstream Familiekerk, onder leiding van die Ringskommissie,
van die Olifantsfontein moeder gemeente afstig. Lede van die gemeente het
dit as ‘n ongelooflke geestelike ervaring bestempel; die hoogtepunt van harde
werk en verhoring van talle gebede. Tydens dieselfde geleentheid is die eerste
kerkraadslede in hul ampte bevestig en die kerkraad het dr Gerhard Lindeque
as predikant beroep. Dr. Lindeque het die beroep aanvaar en is op 10 Januarie
2010 in die gemeente bevestig.
Die kerkraad, in samewerking met die gemeente, beplan ‘n blink toekoms vir
die nuwe gemeente, wat die volgende insluit:
• ‘n Kinderkerk om die jongspan te bedien
• Vroeë oggend aanbidding eenmaal per maand op ‘n Vrydag, om 05:00.
Begin op 26 Februarie en daarna weer op 26 Maart.
• Vroue-in-Aksie byeenkomste op die derde Woensdagaand van elke
maand om 19:00. Begin op 17 Februarie en dan weer op 17 Maart en
21 April.
• Die Loof Hutte Fees wat ‘n uitkamp op Vrydagaand 19 Februarie om
18:00 by die kerkterrein insluit.
• Gemeenskapsvergadering op 4
Maart om 19:00 by die kerk waar
beplanning gedoen word om te
kyk hoe die kerk ‘n bydrae in die
gemeenskap kan lewer
Die Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk in
Midrand Estates sal voortaan bekend staan
as Midstream Familiekerk en nooi alle
belangstellendes uit om by die kerk in te
skakel.

Residents bring their gifts in abundance to give Christmas meaning to others
The Midrand Estates community reached into their pockets in December 2009 and donated trolleys
full of presents for children outside the community. The presents were collected during a Carols-by
Candlelight event arranged by the local shopping centre – the Square@Midstream.

More than 600 residents joined in the
annual Carols-by-Candlelight event held
in the centre parking area on 2 December
09, with the main entertainers being
Lisa Bronner and the energetic Yaddah
choir from Midstream College. Where
professional singer, Lisa Bronner’s guided
the crowd through a number of carols,
the Yaddah choir stole the show with
rhythmic song and dance routines. In
their bright yellow T-shirts and with smiles
on their faces they expressed their love
of singing and their love for the Lord – it
was thoroughly enjoyed by all that were
present on the evening!
A special word of thanks to the personnel of the
Square@Midstream for arranging the worth while
event, to Tia Howse, Tiessie de Koning and Lisa Mc-
Crystal for their involvement with the distribution of
the presents and donations, to Yolande van Heerden
and every member of the Yaddah choir, MES for assisting
with the spectacular lighting at the shopping
centre.... and finally, to everyone that gave a little of
themselves and gave presents in abudance!
With the presents donated filling the
modern day Santa’s sleigh of a red Vespascooter
and 5 shopping trolleys, the faces
of many children could be brightened with
the distribution to the following:
