NOW in his 100th year, Alfred
Raymond Holt is not surprisingly
the oldest member of De Maulay
Lodge No 6358 and he was pleased
to receive a 50-year Craft jubilee
certificate at the residential home in
Bessacarr where he now resides.
De Maulay chaplain Derek Hart
made the presentation and was
accompanied by almoner Roy
Marchant.
W Bro Alfred remains quite alert
and is able to use a computer and
watch television. He was Master
of his Lodge in 1970 and treasurer
from 1974-1987. In business, he
was a stockbroker in Doncaster.

“WORK hard and play hard “was the
maxim for Michael Sheard Schofield in
his rugby playing days and the senior
and respected Pudsey Mason has
replicated much of this philosophy
throughout a colourful Masonic
career.
The “house full” signs went up at
Pudsey Masonic Hall on Thursday,
13 October 2011, when over 100
Brethren attended a meeting of the
Lodge of Benevolence No 5612, to
celebrate W Bro Schofield’s 50 years
in Freemasonry.
This was 50 years packed with
incident, endeavour, dedication and
delight and much of this came to the fore
during a very entertaining presentation
of a jubilee certificate to Michael by his
great friend, Assistant Provincial Grand
Master D Stuart Cummins.
There were many amusing anecdotes and it was pleasing that Michael’s brother,
Christopher, and his son, Stephen, both Past Masters of the Lodge, played their part in
the proceedings.
W Bro. Schofield was, providentially, born in 1936, the year that the Lodge of
Benevolence was Consecrated – a Lodge which was to play such a major part in his
future life.
Prominent in the wool trade where he became a company director, Michael was for
many years a keen and active member of Bradford RU Club.
He was Initiated into the Lodge of Benevolence in June 1961, raised 12 months later
and became Master in 1976. Acting rank as Deputy Provincial Grand Secretary followed
in 1986, progressing to PPJGW in May 1994. Pinnacle of his Craft Masonry came in in
April 1998 when he became Acting Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies, which was
followed by the corresponding Past Grand Rank.
On joining the Royal Arch in 1977, he was Exalted into St Laurence Chapter No 2330,
becoming First Principal in 1986. His progress in Provincial Grand Chapter culminated
in his being appointed Third Grand Principal and finally Second Grand Principal, from
which office he retired in 2006.
In Supreme Grand Chapter he enjoys the Rank of Past Assistant Grand Sojourner. He
was also the founding First Principal of Criterion Chapter of Installed Principals No 6220.
In the Order of the Temple, W Bro Schofield is a member of St Laurence Preceptory No
298 and enjoys the Rank of Past Provincial 1st Constable .
During a long and distinguished career, his involvement with the Pudsey “family of
Lodges” has been immense and he has

chaired many of its committees as well
as serving for 21 years as a director of the
Masonic hall company.
He also found time to become chairman
of the fund-raising committee for the annual
Connaught Court fete at Fulford, York and
has been a leading figure in a host of social
activities at Pudsey.
During a splendid festive board, Michael
was presented with a regalia case by the
Master, Alan Steel, as a token of the esteem
and affection in which he is held by all the
Brethren of the Lodge of Benevolence.
