Two honoured with Acting ROLES . . . JAMES H NEWMAN, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution, has been appointed Second Assistant Grand Sojourner in Supreme Grand Chapter. James, a member of Welcome Chapter No 3779 since 1992, and who recently joined Castle Chapter of Harmony No 26 in the Metropolitan Grand Chapter of London, was Acting Senior Grand Deacon in United Grand Lodge until his retirement the day before the Supreme Grand Chapter Investiture. He is a Founder member of the South Yorkshire Chapter of Installed Principals No 9633 and holds the Rank of PPGSN in Province, having been Acting Steward in 2003. He previously held the Grand Rank of PG StB . ALAN HURDLEY, PPGSN, a member of Prudence Chapter No 206, which he served as First Principal in 1997, is the Province’s Education and Development Officer. Alan has been appointed to the Acting Rank of Grand Standard Bearer. He has been Scribe E of Prudence Chapter for over 10 years and is also Janitor at Chapter of Sincerity No 600. Tracey explains why it was all so worthwhile! TRACEY TAYLOR, Colin’s wife, reflects on the celebrations, trials and tribulations of her husband’s year as Master of his Lodge THE preparations started early in the year, when we had all of our social events to arrange before Colin became Master of Integrity Lodge No 380. First, we had to select the right social secretaries to support us along the way. We needed experienced people, who knew what needed to be done but also with some fresh ideas. I wanted to make sure our events were going to be talked about for the right reasons. We decided on Phil and Helen and Nigel and Margaret, who are relatively new members of the Lodge. This was a really nerve wracking time, as I had never done anything like this. I was aware that we were all really inexperienced when it came to Lodge protocol. What did help was the fact that I had always offered support to other members when they were in the chair, so we were not short of offers of help. We needed guidance and it was then that I realised what a great Lodge Colin belonged to. Everyone was amazing. Agreeing what social events we would like and what charities we wanted to support was a time when we became great friends with our helpers. I felt a great responsibility to get things right and Helen and Margaret understood how important it was for me. We made a great team and although very nervous, we were also really excited. As we all had children, we wanted to create a balance by encouraging families at events such as our race night, Sunday Lunch and Lodge Weekend, while still making the events enjoyable for the older Brethren. It was great to see the young and old come together. Our son, Lewis, who is 10, attended most of the events and often talks about what is going to happen when he becomes a Freemason! Soon after Colin’s Installation I was aware that he had a lot of responsibility. He was busy with work and struggled to find time to learn his ritual. I wanted to make sure that he had little to do when it came to organising events. The two biggest were the Lodge Weekend and Ladies Night, but luckily they were both towards the end of the year, which gave us lots of time to bring it all together. At the back of my mind I also knew that I had a Ladies Speech to deliver, but that would have to wait. As the year progressed I don’t know how I found enough time to get things done, what with family, work, running a house, continuing the voluntary work that I do and being the Worshipful Master’s wife! To add to this Colin was diagnosed with some health problems in the summer. I now really had to prioritise my workload. Having found a great venue for our Lodge Weekend, we were lucky that they took control of all the organising, so that allowed me to focus on Ladies Night. The ladies took care of buying the decorations for the room and the ladies gifts. It was like being an event organiser and we all agreed it would be our ideal job. We were having so much fun. The men were more focused on putting up posters and sending out the notice to all the Brethren. Now we had to hope that we generated enough interest, as with all the events. This is probably the most frustrating part, worrying that you will get enough people there on the night. It is the one thing that is out of your control. We needn’t have worried, we had 91 people there - the room was full to the brim. I had managed to put my speech together about a week before the big night and sat there exchanging pleasantries with friends, but I couldn’t relax. I just wanted it to be over. I could see many ladies who had sat in my position and they all offered me great words of encouragement. The night progressed and was a real success. My speech was well received and I can only hope no-one saw how much my knees were knocking under the table. On Sunday morning it hit me like a ton of bricks. What a massive anticlimax! We had spent the whole year discussing and organising our biggest event and it was all over. I then realised how much I had enjoyed my year.
