Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Freedman earned<br />

her B.A. magna cum laude in<br />

1968 at Radcliffe College and<br />

her J.D. in 1971 at Yale <strong>Law</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong>. She is admitted to the<br />

Bars in Connecticut, the<br />

District <strong>of</strong> Columbia, and<br />

Pennsylvania. She was an<br />

assistant defender with the<br />

Defender Association <strong>of</strong><br />

Philadelphia; a founder, staff<br />

attorney, and later chairperson <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees at<br />

the Women’s <strong>Law</strong> Project in Philadelphia; and executive<br />

director <strong>of</strong> the Women and the <strong>Law</strong> Project at the Georgetown<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>Law</strong> Center. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Freedman received<br />

a Yale <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong> Urban <strong>Law</strong> Committee Research Grant<br />

for Women and the <strong>Law</strong> curriculum development. She was<br />

a teaching fellow in the Department <strong>of</strong> Sociology at Yale<br />

College and taught at the Georgetown <strong>University</strong> <strong>Law</strong><br />

Center, Villanova <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong>, and in the women’s studies<br />

program at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania. Her many publications<br />

include the books Women’s Rights and the <strong>Law</strong>, <strong>The</strong><br />

Impact <strong>of</strong> the ERA on State <strong>Law</strong>s with Brown, Katz, and Price,<br />

and Sex Discrimination and the <strong>Law</strong>: History, Practice and<br />

<strong>The</strong>ory with Babcock, Ross, Williams, Copelon, Rhode, and<br />

Taub. Her most recent article is “Feminist Legal Method in<br />

Action: Combating Racism, Sexism, and Homophobia in<br />

<strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong>” (Georgia <strong>Law</strong> Review).<br />

Steven F. Friedell<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Friedell earned his B.A.<br />

summa cum laude in 1971 at<br />

Brandeis <strong>University</strong>, where<br />

he was elected to Phi Beta<br />

Kappa. He was associate<br />

editor <strong>of</strong> the law review at<br />

the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Michigan<br />

<strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong>, where he earned<br />

his J.D. magna cum laude in<br />

1974. Admitted to the Bars<br />

in the District <strong>of</strong> Columbia,<br />

Michigan, and New Jersey, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Friedell was an associate<br />

with the law firm <strong>of</strong> Sutherland, Asbill & Brennan in<br />

Washington, D.C., before coming to the law school. Among<br />

his publications are volume I <strong>of</strong> Benedict on Admiralty<br />

(Matthew Bender), ‘<strong>The</strong> ‘Different Voice’ in Jewish <strong>Law</strong>:<br />

Some Parallels to a Feminist Jurisprudence” (Indiana <strong>Law</strong><br />

Journal), and “Compensation and Reward for Saving Life at<br />

Sea” (Michigan <strong>Law</strong> Review).<br />

Sandra Gavin<br />

Director <strong>of</strong> Advocacy Studies.<br />

Ms. Gavin earned her B.A. in<br />

1972 at Case Western Reserve<br />

<strong>University</strong>. She was editor <strong>of</strong><br />

the law review at Cleveland<br />

Marshall College <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>,<br />

Cleveland State <strong>University</strong>,<br />

where she earned her J.D.<br />

in 1978. Ms. Gavin was an<br />

assistant public defender,<br />

Office <strong>of</strong> Public Defender,<br />

in Cleveland, Ohio, until<br />

1980. She then practiced with the firm <strong>of</strong> Griffith & Burr in<br />

Philadelphia, from 1980 to 1986, as a trial lawyer. Since<br />

1986, Ms. Gavin has been a practicing attorney and principal<br />

<strong>of</strong> Gavin & Gavin, P.A., in Cherry Hill. She received her<br />

civil trial certification from the New Jersey Supreme Court<br />

in 1994. She also is a mediator for the Eastern District <strong>of</strong><br />

Pennsylvania and for the New Jersey Superior Court. Ms.<br />

Gavin has served as a frequent panelist on continuing legal<br />

education programs and has developed materials for use<br />

in the law school curriculum for teaching advocacy and<br />

dispute resolution through participatory skills courses.<br />

In addition to teaching Pretrial Advocacy, Trial Advocacy,<br />

Alternative Dispute Resolution, and Evidence, she serves as<br />

coach <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Rutgers</strong>–<strong>Camden</strong> student trial advocacy teams.<br />

She joined the law school faculty in 1992 as an adjunct faculty<br />

member and became director <strong>of</strong> Advocacy Studies in<br />

1996. Her article, “Playing by the Rules: Strategies for<br />

Defending Depositions,” appears in the Detroit College <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Law</strong> at Michigan State <strong>University</strong> <strong>Law</strong> Review, 1999.<br />

George Ginsburgs<br />

Distinguished Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong><br />

Emeritus. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Ginsburgs<br />

New <strong>School</strong> for Social<br />

Research in New York before<br />

coming to the law school. His research has been sponsored<br />

for several years by the Social Science Research Council.<br />

Among his many publications is Citizenship <strong>Law</strong> <strong>of</strong> the USSR.<br />
