Improved, and Safer!
The unfortunate incident last Friday led to some valuable conversations about ways to improve our safety systems
for our students. We appreciate the input from parents and staff! Isely has always been a very safe school, and
with your help will be even safer.
Isely Improvements:
Doors have been repaired to help eliminate the not-latching problem. All are asked to double check that the door behind
them closes securely.
New signage around the building, informing “insiders” not to open doors for people knocking, and telling “outsiders” we can
only let them in door #1
We have coached our students to report any adult who appears to be a stranger. Staff will wear nametags to help with this
effort. We ask that parents wear their nametags while at Isely, also. Don’t have one? Just ask!
Students should use the restroom during class breaks, when there is plenty of supervision, to deter a need to go later
Restroom needs outside of classroom breaks will be handled with care and consideration.
Reading Celebrations
Developing life-long readers is a goal of every Isely teacher.
One way we have encouraged reading is through an annual
book giveaway. In past years PTO has helped with a Dr. Seuss
Day, or a Curious George Day, where students hear a guest
reader and select a book of their very own.
This year, each grade level will plan a “Celebrate Reading”
Event where their books will be selected. It is our hope that
parents will recognize the vital importance of having lots of
print media in your home, and will provide many reading
opportunities.
1st graders had green eggs and ham last week, and each child
received a book of their very own!
Lots of Learning in Library Classes!
3 rd , 4 th & 5 th grade students voted for their favorite William Allen
White nominee this week. The Isely Winner is Swindle by favorite
author Gordon Korman. Results for Wichita and the state will
be announced in April.
4 th & 5 th graders acquired an “ad-ucation” during a four week
study using lessons from admongo.gov. Online students can play
the game that teaches kids to use critical-thinking skills through
a series of fast-paced, engaging games. The site along with the
lessons covered in library time help students to answer three
key questions about advertising:
1. Who is responsible for the ad?
2. What is the ad actually saying?
3. What does the ad want you to buy, do, or think?
It was created by The Federal Trade Commission.
Other grade level recent studies:
Kindergarten & 1 st grade classes participated in research on
animals and important adaptations they have for survival.
2 nd grade brushed up on map skills & we just began working
on making a video about behaviors we want to see at Isely.
3 rd grade is earning passport stamps as they complete research
on each of the 7 continents.
All students will have Library & Art Star Behavior Parties during
their regular class times next week.
