The origin of academic caps, gowns and hoods dates to the 12th century and
the rise of the universities, which were originally under the auspices of the church, and
whose faculties were comprised of churchmen. These scholars wore clerical robes, hoods
and capes as much for warmth during the long, cold European winters as for distinction.
Today the standard academic regalia worn in the United States are of three types.
The bachelor’s gown is characterized by its simplicity of line and long, pointed sleeves,
distinguishing it from the master’s gown, best recognized by its rectangular, “wing-like”
sleeves. The doctor’s gown, with full, bell-shaped sleeves, is faced in front and back with
velvet and has three velvet bars across the sleeves. In addition, the tassel on the doctor’s
cap may be gold.
The hood is the most symbolic part of the academic regalia. Its size and shape
indicate the level of the degree held, its lining shows the colors of the institution
granting it, and the color of its velvet border corresponds to the general academic
program of the degree. Thus, all Le Moyne hoods are lined with green and gold, the
College colors. Among the hoods worn by Le Moyne graduates and faculty, most have
borders of one of the following colors: white (arts and letters) for those with the degree
of Bachelor of Arts or Master of Arts; golden yellow (science), corresponding to the
degree of Bachelor of Science or Master of Science; and dark blue (philosophy), worn by
faculty holding the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in various academic disciplines. Other
colors worn by Le Moyne faculty and administrative personnel, indicating the master’s
or doctor’s degree they hold, include crimson (theology), purple (law), drab (business
administration) and light blue (education).
• For the second consecutive year, the College welcomed the largest class in its history, thanks to an
enormously successful recruitment effort that saw a record number of applications. A total of 626
freshman and 150 transfer students joined the Le Moyne community in fall 2010, from an applicant
pool of 4,851 – more than 300 over the previous record.
• The College earned accolades for both its academic excellence and value in several national rankings.
Washington Monthly magazine named Le Moyne the nation’s fifth-best institution in its Master’s
Universities category (out of 551), placing it in the top one percent. For the second consecutive
year, Le Moyne was named one of the best colleges in the Northeast by The Princeton Review, and
the College was also recognized in rankings compiled by U.S. News and World Report, Kiplinger’s and
Forbes magazine.
• Several significant improvements were made to campus. The Le Moyne Plaza, housing the College
Bookstore, a Dunkin' Donuts and Cam's Pizzeria, opened in a previously vacant commercial property.
The campus community also welcomed the return of the beloved Dolphin Den, which includes a food
court, coffee shop and convenience store. In addition, the men’s and women’s lacrosse and soccer
teams began their seasons on a new turf field.
• The College broke ground on a $20 million, 48,000-square-foot addition to the Coyne Science
Center. Work is expected to be completed in late 2011 and it should be ready for classes beginning
with the spring 2012 semester.
• The 2010 Founders’ Day Gala, which honored the Rev. Msgr. J. Robert Yeazel, V.G., pastor of Holy
Cross Church in DeWitt, N.Y., and a member of the Le Moyne Board of Trustees, with the Simon
Le Moyne Award, was the largest in the College’s history. It drew a record 850 attendees.
The event raised $170,000 to benefit Le Moyne’s scholarship program.
• Several members of the College’s Jesuit community marked important milestones in their vocations.
William Bosch, S.J., College archivist, Daniel Mulhauser, S.J., alumni chaplain emeritus, and Joseph
Neville, S.J., spiritual director, marked 50 years since their ordination as priests; Donald Kirby, S.J., ’64,
professor of religious studies, commemorated the 50th anniversary of his entrance into the Society
of Jesus; and Donald Maldari, S.J., associate professor of religious studies and Francis J. Fallon, S.J.,
endowed professor, celebrated the 25th anniversary of his ordination as a priest. David McCallum,
S.J., ’90, director of mission and identity, and Adelmo P. Dunghe, S.J., visiting assistant professor of
English and religious studies, professed their final vows as members of the Society of Jesus.
• The College was rated as a military friendly school by GI Jobs magazine, a distinction awarded to just
15 percent of schools nationwide. The College also dedicated a Student Veterans House; located on
Springfield Road, it serves as a gathering place for Le Moyne’s growing student-veteran population.
• For the first time in the College’s history, Le Moyne was named to the “Philanthropy 400” list, a compilation
of organizations and institutions that received the most philanthropic support for the fiscal
year that ended in 2009. Le Moyne was ranked number 381 on the list with $43 million raised, primarily
from the McDevitt gift, which was announced in November 2008.
• History Professor Douglas R. Egerton, Ph.D., was awarded the prestigious Mary Ball Washington
Chair in American History by the U.S. State Department’s Fulbright Program, and will spend the
2011-12 academic year at University College Dublin.
• The cast and crew of the College’s production of the Federico Garcia Lorca play Blood Wedding was
invited to participate in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival for the Northeast
region. During the weeklong festival and conference, Michael Blagys ’11 received an honorable mention
Joy is the most effective witness to the Gospel.
This is the credo by which Father James Martin, of the Society of Jesus, lives. Cheerful, personable and
industrious, Father Martin embraces everything he does with brio, whether celebrating the sacraments as a
priest, serving as culture editor of the Jesuit weekly magazine America or even appearing on Comedy Central’s
The Colbert Report, which he has done often enough to be dubbed the show’s “chaplain.” At the center of
everything he does is his abiding faith in and love of God.
A native of Plymouth Meeting, Pa., and a 1982 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton
School, Father Martin was on track for a promising career in corporate America, spending six years in finance
and human resources at General Electric. But something was missing, and the new path he discovered led
to his entrance into the Society of Jesus in 1988 and his ordination as a priest in 1999. In the ensuing two
decades as a Jesuit, he has ministered around the world, including at a hospice for the sick and dying in
Kingston, Jamaica, an outreach program to gang members in Chicago and with the Jesuit Refugee Service in
Nairobi, Kenya.
But Father Martin has become most well known as a man of the Word and of letters, as an acclaimed
and prolific speaker and writer about the Catholic faith in dialogue with society and culture. He is the
author or editor of more than 10 books, many of which reflect his life’s journey. His memoir, My Life with the
Saints, was named by Publishers Weekly as one of the Best Books of the Year in 2006 and was the winner of
a 2007 Christopher Award for affirming “the highest values of the human spirit.” His most recent work, The
Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything: A Spirituality for Real Life, was published last year to critical praise and
made the New York Times best-seller list. In addition to his award-winning writing for America magazine,
Father Martin contributes regularly to a range of print and online publications, such as The Times and The
Huffington Post, and is a frequent commentator for television and radio, including CNN, Fox News, and
National Public Radio.
His speaking, writing, and commentary are marked by humor, humility, and a candor and acceptance of
himself as he is, created in God’s image, an affirmation of the human condition central to his ministry. He
has been blessed with the ability to treat difficult issues with a gentle tone, defusing tensions while never
diminishing the problem at hand. His considerable gifts and education have not distanced him from others,
but have enabled him to connect to and inspire Christians and other religious believers seeking to deepen
their faith as well as those who are filled with questions about faith. Through it all he remains a lifelong
student, continuing to grow through his experiences, his reading of the Gospel and his dedication to The
Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola.
Kat h ry n H. Ruscitto ’76
Kathryn Howe Ruscitto, of the Le Moyne Class of 1976, has dedicated her professional life to providing
quality, compassionate care to the ill and elderly of our community, and through her work has
touched the lives of thousands of people throughout Central New York.
For the past decade she has worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center in Syracuse, first as
senior vice president for strategic development and governmental affairs and later as executive vice
president before being named the institution’s president and chief executive officer earlier this year.
During her tenure she has led initiatives to improve quality and safety throughout the hospital network
and has led strategic planning for St. Joseph’s, ensuring its sound future. Under her leadership, the
hospital has grown to become an even more vital component of the city’s North Side, expanding its
outreach services. Kathy was instrumental in leading a multi-million dollar hospital renovation project
that has contributed not only to the improvement of Syracuse’s Prospect Hill neighborhood, but also to
the quality of care for patients and their families.
She has achieved these impressive results by utilizing the strengths of each of her colleagues and
celebrating their contributions. Above all else, Kathy understands that outstanding patient care begins
with a motivated, highly respected staff. While her days are filled with a myriad of responsibilities,
Kathy still takes the time to stop to talk to patients and families as she walks through the hospital, asking
if there is anything that she can do for them.
This caring and civic-minded spirit has characterized Kathy’s personal and professional life. Prior
to joining St. Joseph’s, she was the senior vice president of strategy at Loretto, the largest provider of
eldercare services in upstate New York. It was there that she implemented the Program of All-inclusive
Care for the Elderly, also known as PACE, which allows individuals to remain in their homes as long as
possible while still receiving the care they need. She also served as the administrator for human services
for Onondaga County. In that role, she oversaw the development of the Emergency Communications
Center, which merged most police, fire and emergency medical dispatch and communication services,
and was instrumental in reforming the Department of Social Services and Children’s Division, including
changes that helped to lower the infant mortality rate in the county.
Away from work, Kathy is a member of the Dames of Malta, an international Catholic
charitable relief organization, and serves as chair of the National Committee for Response to the
Haitian disaster for the Federal Association of Malta. She is also a member of Syracuse 2020, a
non-partisan, not-for-profit coalition of Central New York business and community leaders, and
the Healthcare Association of New York State. A devoted Le Moyne alumna, she has generously
given back to her alma mater as a member of the Board of Regents and volunteered her time with
the offices of Admission and Career Services.
With deep appreciation for her numerous contributions to our community and to her alma mater,
Le Moyne College is honored to present
Hon o r a r y De g r e e Re c i p i e n t s

Ja n Lambrecht, S.J.
Father Jan Lambrecht’s love of God as well as his students, friends and vocation has long been a
source of inspiration to those around him.
Born in Wielsbeke, Belgium, in 1926, Father Lambrecht entered the Society of Jesus in 1945. He
studied in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, and earned a licentiate in philosophy in 1952. Returning to
Belgium, he earned a licentiate in Eastern history and languages at the Katholieke Universiteit in Leuven
and was ordained a priest in 1959 and earned a licentiate in theology in 1960. Father Lambrecht was
awarded a Doctorate of Sacred Scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome in 1965.
A professor of New Testament and Biblical Greek at the Katholieke Universiteit in Leuven until
1990, Father Lambrecht was regarded as a superb and demanding teacher who exuded sincere enthusiasm
for his subject matter. His students recall how deeply he cared about them, noting that, while professors
in Leuven do not have office hours, or even offices, Father Lambrecht was always available to
meet with them in the library to discuss any questions or concerns they might have about their work.
One former student, who was himself inspired to join the Society of Jesus in part by Father Lambrecht,
recalled him leading a class in a study of the Magnificat, the prayer of Mary in St. Luke’s Gospel. After
an exhaustive two-hour parsing of every word of the text he concluded the class by humbly adding: “I
hope that this exercise will help you not only to do New Testament exegesis, but also to use this text as
a personal prayer.”
His retired status in Belgium has not stopped Father Lambrecht from continuing his esteemed teaching
career around the world, including at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome; St. John Vianney
Major Seminary in Pretoria, South Africa; and Loyola University New Orleans, where he graciously
volunteered to teach following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Le Moyne was blessed to
have Father Lambrecht bring his inestimable gifts to campus in 2009 as holder of the Mitchell Chair
of Christian Wisdom. He team-taught a course with his fellow Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno, the
Vatican astronomer, titled “Dynamic Creation: Faith and Reason,” which examined the character of the
universe from the dual perspectives of Christian revelation and the natural sciences.
A renowned scholar, Father Lambrecht was a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission from
1985 to 1995. His research in the letters of St. Paul and the parables in the Synoptic Gospels is highly
regarded among New Testament scholars. He is the author of numerous books, including Once More
Astonished: The Parables of Jesus; Collected Studies on Pauline Literature and on the Book of Revelation; and
Understanding What One Reads: New Testament Essays. His work has been published widely in Chinese,
Dutch, English, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.
With gratitude for his life of ministry, scholarship and teaching, Le Moyne College is honored to present
