I am honored to have my art on the cover of 

GreenList Louisville. It is this attention to all of 

life and nature that I think we as a society are 

beginning to lose sight of, so that is why many 

of my photographs are of nature and of nature 

interacting with man. My hope is that my images 

provoke a strong positive emotion so that 

people can see the beauty the world has to offer, 

from the smallest animal to the largest mountain, 

and that we all do our best to preserve 

these wonderments on earth. Different images 

of nature and education for all will allow people 

to experience the wonderment the earth has to 

offer for generations to come. 

For the shot on the cover I was enjoying the way 

man is preserving nature and educating the 

public at a butterfly sanctuary. I was able to capture 

that moment, un-manipulated or adjusted,

Transition Louisville seeks to educate and facilitate movement toward a more sustainable, 

lower energy lifestyle. Monday, July 20, Transition Louisville will sponsor 

a screening of “Power of Community”. This film chronicles Cuba’s response to the 

sudden cut offof their oil supply as a result of the collapse of the Soviet Union. 

Cuban communities pulled together, created solutions, and ultimately thrived in 

spite of their decreased dependence on imported energy.The film and discussion

seen Green Orbit owner and “Chief 

Pedaler” Josh Wilcox last weekend 

at the KY State Hill Climb. He was the 

neon-colored guy who was pulling Ollie 

the Otter, Olmstead Parks mascot, in 

a rickshaw. 

Josh is expanding his bicycle rickshaw 

(green taxi), bicycle courier, and mobile 

advertising business to include bulk delivery.

green transportation business. We are 

founded by the principles of sustainability, 

environmentalism and recession 

proof economics. The most efficient 

method for moving products through 

an urban environment is through the 

use of a bicycle. We offer a variety of

to the Louisville market. 

One of our products, the bicycle and 

trailer, is now responsible for bringing 

you the Green List. Our goal is to deliver

Beyond general transportation, our 

founding members contribute to a variety 

of other green initiatives. We work closely 

with Earthsave to educate consumers of 

their dietary impacts. We are working to 

establish a regular water quality sampling 

system for the Olmstead Parks Conservancy. 

We also help the local community 

garden movement by providing access 

to a trained rotor tiller operator. We are 

members of LIBA and have been active in 

both the food and bike summits. 

We are currently looking for a few more good

Personal “Coolth” in The Age of Global Warming

Staying cool in Louisville during the 

“dog days” of summer is no mean feat. 

Doing it without running the AC (and 

burning fossil fuels / melting the planet 

/ destroying KY mountains) sounds 

even more challenging, but it needn’t 

be. 

Here are a few suggestions: 

1. Open your freezer door and just let 

that sucker work for a while. 

Oh, wait, sorry. Scrap that. That’s for 

another article called “How To Ruin Life 

On Earth In Just 5 Minutes A Day.” 

Ah, here we go, found em: 

FAN-TASTIC: 

I’m a fan of fans. A little airflow goes 

a long way, especially if you’re already 

sweaty. Even a gentle breeze of 1-2 

mph from a well placed fan can really 

cool you. Fans are easy to use, inexpensive, 

and much more energy efficient 

than AC - just make sure your ceiling 

fan blades are pulling hot air up and not 

pushing it down at you. You can even 

go old-school with a hand fan. Also, to 

boost your fan’s effectiveness, you can 

put a bowl of ice or soda bottles filled 

with frozen water between you and 

your fan. Poof! Instant poor-man’s AC. 

Once it all melts, just refreeze the water. 

Hey, that freezer’s working anyway 

- might as well use it and save your AC. 

DON’T COOK: 

What and how we eat in the summer 

can actually have a big effect on how 

cool we feel. Head for salads instead of 

soup. Focusing on cool or room temperature 

foods will give your oven and 

stove a break, save energy, and keep 

you and your house cooler. In addition, 

smaller, lighter meals based around 

foods with a high water content (think 

local fruit and veggies - mmmmmm, 

watermelon!) will refresh you, keep you 

energized, hydrated, and, ultimately, 

cooler. Also, spicy foods will make you 

sweat, which also cools you (there’s a 

reason salsa fresca was invented south 

of the border). Keep your freezer and 

fridge well stocked to save energy (the 

more full they are the more efficiently 

they cool) AND to have cool treats on 

hand (read: ice cream!). One good 

refresher to stock the fridge with is 

home-brewed sun tea - steep it the sun 

for a couple hours, stick it in the fridge 

and you’re good to go. 

If you really need to cook, consider 

using the free thermonuclear cooking 

device that’s been strategically placed 

93 million miles away and busting out 

a solar cooker - you can make one with 

some cardboard and aluminum foil for 

almost nothing. 

DRESS COOL: 

Dress cool. No, not leather jackets and 

cowboy boots “cool” - white shirts and 

shorts cool. Going naked’s even cooler 

(though maybe not cooler). Also, using 

linen sheets on your bed can help. 

Linen’s twice as cool as the next best 

thing - cotton. And don’t bother making 

your bed with a comforter - that 

traps heat during the day and makes 

them less cool by the time you want to 

use them. 

POWER DOWN: 

Keep your lights, computer, and other 

appliances off when you’re not using 

them - they’re mini-heaters - and invest 

in CFLs or LEDs. Incandescent lights 

give off 90% of their energy as heat 

rather than light - they’re great heaters 

and lousy lights. Just what you don’t 

want in the summer. 

SOLAR SCHEDULE: 

If you can, save heavy physical work / 

exercise for the early morning or evening 

- if you do your hard work when 

it’s not as hot, you’ll need less help from 

the AC to keep you feeling cool. 

GET DOWN: 

Spend some time in the basement. 

Summer’s the perfect time to install 

that ping-pong or foosball table you’ve

always wanted, and have a party in the 

cellar. Two feet below the surface, the 

earth is a constant 55 degrees. That 

means the basement is relatively cool 

in the summer and warm in the winter. 

If we can’t all live in earth-bermed shelters, 

at least we can take advantage of 

the constant deep earth temperatures 

in our basements. You can also position 

a fan to blow some of that natural coolness 

to other parts of the house. 

THE ANSWER IS BLOWING IN THE WIND: 

Keep north facing windows open to 

let in some breeze - you can also open 

west facing windows in the morning 

and east facing windows in the evening 

to “track the shade.” If you want to fine 

tune this strategy, at night open a few 

low (first floor or basement) windows 

on the windward side of the house and 

a bunch of upper floor windows on the 

leeward side of the house, and take 

advantage of some natural convection 

to cool things off. One other variation 

on open windows is: wet laundry 

= free AC. Hanging your wet laundry 

out to dry in the summer is a great way 

to save money and energy, but if you 

really want a third benefit, hang it out 

to dry in an open window. The evaporation 

of water from the clothes cools 

the passing air (by approx. 1000 BTU/lb. 

H2O evaporated) giving you a nice cool 

breeze - a laundry trifecta! 

ALL WET: 

Instead of a hot morning shower, wait 

until you’re nice and hot during the day 

and then take a cool shower. You’ll save 

energy, cool yourself off, AND (given 

the duration of a typical cold shower) 

save water too. You can also create an 

effective mini-version of this by targeting 

key parts of your body with a cold, 

wet washcloth. The cooling “hot spots” 

include the back of your neck, your 

forehead, your wrists, ankles and knees. 

ONE WORD - HAMMOCK: 

There is almost nothing as cool and 

relaxing in the sweltering summer as a 

breezy swing in a nicely shaded hammock. 

Of course this means that you 

might need to plant some trees in 

your yard. If you plant deciduous trees 

on the south and west sides of your 

house, you’ll get shade in the summer 

and weather protection in the winter. 

Sitting in the shade of a tree (or porch) 

on a hot summer day refreshes the 

body AND soul - and can be a great way 

to get to know your family and neighbors. 

And the more time we spend 

outside in the summer, the more... 

well...“conditioned” we become to 

summer temperatures and the less AC 

we need in our lives. In modern times, 

we’ve become abnormally conditioned 

to 65 degree buildings in the summer, 

and yet people got along just fine for 

eons before the invention of AC. 

Finally, if you HAVE to use AC, make sure 

it’s Energy Star-rated, keep your windows 

and doors closed during the day 

(and open during cooler nights), invest 

in a programable thermostat set to 75 

or more in the summer, and change the 

air filter once a month to save money, 

energy, and stay cooler for less. 

We live in a society that (insanely) burns 

things to stay cool, and consequently 

is creating atmospheric conditions that 

are rapidly shrinking the earth’s natural 

air conditioning (glaciers and polar ice 

caps). In a sense, we’re sacrificing the 

earth’s long-term cooling capacity for 

very temporary local cooling gains, 

which will only make things hotter over 

time. It’s an ironic, vicious cycle that 

doesn’t need to be. Pass the ice cream!

Outdoor Survival Tips

Poison ivy, stings, and mosquitoes can 

put a damper on our enjoyment of the 

outdoors. But never fear! Our plant 

allies are here! Here are a few tips to 

make your outdoor experiences more 

enjoyable. 

Your best ally against poison ivy is 

jewelweed. Jewelweed has been used 

for centuries to relieve skin irritation 

caused by poison ivy, poison oak or 

other plant rashes. Jewelweed works 

by neutralizing the chemicals these 

plants leave behind. Just slice the 

stem long ways to open it then rub the 

juice from the stem directly onto the 

skin. The juice quickly relieves the itch, 

reduces the swelling and stops the rash 

from spreading. 

Jewelweed 

Jewelweed often grows near poison 

ivy or stinging nettles. So if you are in 

the woods, think you’ve been exposed 

to poison ivy and can locate some Jewelweed, 

you are in luck. It likes moist 

soil so you can usually find it near creek 

beds or in moist areas in the woods. It 

is easy to identify because it is tall and 

has a thick, hollow, juicy stem. It grows 

anywhere from 2-4 feet tall and has 

distinctive orange to red funnel-shaped 

flowers. See the picture above. 

Fortunately, your best ally for stings is a 

very common weed and can be found 

all around you. Plantain is one of the 

Plantain 

top two “weeds” that grows in most any 

lawn. The other is dandelion. There 

are two types of plantain that grow in 

our area, broad leaf and lance leaf. One 

type has a rounded leaf. The other has 

a longer, skinnier leaf. They can be used 

interchangeably. The best way to identify 

plantain leaves is that their veins 

are parallel, rather than branching off in 

many directions. 

If you get stung take a few fresh leaves, 

crush or chew them and apply the 

chewed leaves directly to the sting. 

Hold it in place with a band-aid or 

gauze and repeat if necessary. Plantain 

has amazing drawing power and 

will bring quick relief. Plantain is an 

anti-inflammatory substance that can 

kill germs, speed wound healing, and 

stimulate the growth of new skin cells. 

It can also be used for cuts, bug bites, 

and may even help with poison ivy if 

you can’t locate any Jewelweed. Be 

sure to gather Plantain away from the 

side of the road or in places where 

chemicals are sprayed. 

Another handy tip is to use plants to 

repel mosquitoes! Consider inviting 

Catnip, Basil, Rosemary and Marigold 

to your cookouts this summer. These 

plants give off fragrances that mosquitoes 

don’t like. Plant them near the entrances 

to your home, near your patio 

or deck and throughout the yard. The 

cats can feast on the Catnip and you 


can feast on the Rosemary and Basil all 

summer long. Marigolds can also be 

planted in the garden to help ward off 

bugs without using insecticides.

Almost daily I am reminded of why I 

quit flying in 1993 and became car free 

in 1999. The other morning NPRadio 

aired a report on Italy’s struggles to 

cope with illegal immigrants from 

Libya. A couple of reports later a discussion 

was aired of France’s problems 

with legal Kurdistani immigrants. Later, 

a report on Pakistan’s war with the Taliban 

morphed into the issue of refugees 

in England. All three separate reports 

aired within the space of an hour. This 

is not particularly alarming. The history 

of humanity is the story of populations 

on the move. 

The alarming report came later in a 

discussion of shrinking rivers no longer 

fed by vast mountain glaciers, of slowly 

rising ocean levels, of more violent 

storms and of destabilized world 

weather patterns. 

Those rivers have irrigated the fields of 

populations for millenniums. If their 

waters are reduced too much, the fields 

will not produce. If the crops fail, hungry 

and impoverished populations are 

going to move. 

And those rising oceans do not have to 

engulf earth’s lowest coastlines to loose 

the agricultural production of coastal 

plains. Soil salinity from either rising 

aquifers or violent hurricane inundation 

(remember Hurricane Katrina?) can

drastically reduce food production of 

currently rich coastal plains. When food 

can no longer be grown on the world’s 

many lower coasts, those impoverished 

populations will also move. 

We are not talking about the folk at 

Myrtle Beach suddenly finding themselves 

in precarious position and 

living on the streets of towns in the 

piedmont. It is the multitudes who are 

currently living a subsistence existence 

that are of concern. A third of 

the world’s population lives along the 

coasts. The combined movement of 

impoverished coastal populations and 

poor populations from arid higher-altitudes 

will dwarf the migrant problems 

currently being experienced by 

European countries, this country, and 

every other country. Humanity could 

see social chaos on a scale never before 

experienced. And if that happens, 

Myrtle Beach and Louisville will both 

experience unpleasantries. 

Social chaos is painful (another understatement). 

It would be good for us to 

take steps corporately and individually 

to avoid such chaos. Corporately, our 

transportation habits are big contributors 

to global climate change. Individually, 

the impact of my travel choices 

is nearly insignificant. I am not going 

to stop global climate instability, save 

a species of plant or animal, keep a 

South Sea island from sinking, prolong 

the cheap abundance of petroleum, 

or safeguard anyone’s food source. 

Nevertheless, as part of our corporate 

transportation pattern, as one of many, 

my travel choices are undoubtedly

important. I am participating in either 

a creative or a destructive cultural habit. 

Of equal importance is the fact that I 

am modeling either a sustainable or an 

unsustainable behavior. Of greater personal 

importance, however, is the fact

Make Your Voice Heard: Fight for Clean Energy

If you haven’t been paying attention 

to the fight in Congress over President 

Obama’s clean energy initiative, now’s 

the time to engage. This is the most 

important opportunity in generations 

to jumpstart our economy and fight the 

climate crisis. 

The American Clean Energy and Security 

Act ( ACES) is making its way through 

Congress. Unfortunately, powerful oil 

and coal interests have won concessions 

that weaken the bill’s ability to 

deliver on the full promise of a clean 

energy economy. 

What we need is a program that will 

help create millions of new, high-paying 

green jobs that can’t be outsourced, 

doing things like installing solar panels 

and weatherizing buildings, and updating 

transportation systems. This will 

mean immediate economic relief as 

well as long-term transformation that 

will work for the middle class while 

fighting the climate crisis. MoveOn. 

org is organizing “Power Up America,” 

a massive grassroots campaign to let 

Congress know we need to change the 

direction of this country. We need to 

and to her children when they ask what 

role I played in preserving or destroying 

a beautiful, diverse world. I would 

really like to have more to show than 

pictures of my vacations. And in the 

bigger picture, it really doesn’t matter if 

I ever see the Grand Canyon. 

So, I live flight free and car free. To 

do so, I have moved and found work, 

recreation, shopping, libraries, etc. 

closer to home. My circle is smaller, 

more intimate. I now live in the present 

geography. I live within my own 

human means and limitations. My life, 

like my carbon footprint, is smaller. It is 

not a lifestyle for those who want to live 

large. It is, however, a deeply rewarding 

lifestyle on many levels, and highly 

recommended.

America campaign sponsored a Clean 

Energy Jobs Day in Louisville supporting 

the legislation and highlighting 

what it can do for green businesses 

locally. Damian Pataluna, owner of 

Fischer SIPS, manufacturer of structural 

insulated panels, hosted the event. 

His product creates up to 50% energy 

reduction. Damian currently ships 

product to Europe and Russia, where 

net-zero energy policies are well ahead 

of this country. 

Jeremy Coxon, owner of Sun Wind 

Power Systems, see the ACES bill helping 

to “get America back out in front 

with a clean energy policy,” and creating 

growth for his industry as more 

products which he currently buys from 

Germany are manufactured here. “We 

are light-years behind the rest of the 

world in mass transit, energy policy, 

and technology.”

used by utility companies. Renewable 

energy requirements in the bill could 

mandate utilities buy a certain percentage 

of their energy from renewable 

sources which would finally “force them 

to use some of KY’s other resources 

than coal… a very, very good thing for 

the commonwealth of Kentucky”.

The Nourishing Spirit of Nectar

Floral nectar begins flowing in the 

spring and continues through summer. 

Nectar travels through the air as a 

“scent of the Divine”, an olfactory realization 

of beauty that draws visitors to 

its inherent nourishment. Nectar thus 

solicits its own consumption, linking 

the nourished visitor to the plant’s cycle 

of life and to Life itself. Yet it is the everflowing 

nectar of Spirit that awakens 

and nourishes the soul throughout all 

seasons of life. 

As a manifestation of divine beauty, the 

flower serves a regenerative role in nature. 

When fertilized, it transforms into 

fruit that bears the seeds of generations 

yet to be. But were it not for the visitors 

drawn by its fragrant and uniquely 

nourishing nectar, the blossom’s beauty 

would die along with it. But Nature 

nourishes and perpetuates her own 

beauty. 

From the pollinated blossom develops 

fruit, itself a manifestation of gustatory 

beauty -- sweetness of taste. Prized by 

those who seek its nourishment, the 

fruit serves as a vehicle to the seed, 

ensuring the plant’s wide distribution 

while nourishing the transportation in 

return. Like the nectar preceding it, the 

fruit invites its own consumption, but 

for the benefit of its seeds and their 

inherent purpose. We prize the fruit, but 

we treasure the seed. 

The seed embodies the miracles and 

wisdom of life itself. It is both planted 

and eaten, nourishing in the “now” as 

well as in the future. When conditions 

are right, the seed unfolds, connecting 

soil to sun, water to air. It matures unto 

itself, manifesting its potential along 

the grand continuum of life. 

The increasing availability and intensity 

of sunlight, along with water pulsed by 

the moon, draws forth the flower and 

the nectar, the fruit and the seed. The 

nectar attracts and nourishes the visitors 

necessary for the plant to reproduce. 

The visitor thus becomes part of 

the cyclical renewal of life, enabling the 

multiplication of the plant and its integration 

among myriad other life forms. 

Genetic coding is exchanged and 

pooled, and future generations become 

more likely to materialize and thrive. 

This process of continuity and nourishment 

of form is analogous to our own 

metaphysical attraction and bonding. 

The Tree of Life blooms in due season, 

drawing seekers to its nectar. Nourished 

by the Spirit of Nectar, we bond and 

encode wisdom, becoming both flower 

and seed. Nature nourishes her own. 

And as we are drawn by the scent of the 

garden, we find ourselves nourished 

along the way. Thus led into the garden, 

we see there is much work to be done. 

Indeed, we are drawn here for that purpose 

-- to become the gardeners and 

the caretakers of seeds yet unplanted, 

of generations yet to be. 

At Nectar Ridge Retreat, we come together 

to share, exchange and explore 

our spiritual perspectives. Nourished in 

the process, we bond and support the 

encoding of wisdom for souls yet unborn. 

And so also do we set into motion 

a growth in Spirit.

Toasted Couscous with Fresh Garden Ratatouille 

Couscous makes 3 ½ cups 

1 cup couscous 1 ½ cups water or vegetable stock 

1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon fresh black pepper 

(1) Place salt, pepper and couscous in a dry sauce pan and toast on medium heat until 

fragrant and light brown about 5-6 minutes. (2) Add all liquid to couscous take pan of 

heat and put a lid on pan. (3) Let sit 15 minutes and then fluff with a fork. 

Fresh Garden Ratatouille 

2 medium zucchini medium diced 3 tomatoes diced 

1 medium onion small diced 2 cloves garlic 

2 tablespoons fresh basil cut into ribbons 1 ½ tablespoons olive oil 

Salt and fresh black pepper to taste 

(1) In a medium sauté pan add oil until hot but not smoking. Add onions and sauté for 

2-3 minutes until softened add garlic and sauté 2-3 minutes. (2) Add zucchini, salt and 

pepper and cook 4-5 minutes until zucchini has softened and released a little liquid. 

(3) Add tomatoes and turn down heat let simmer 8 minutes. (4) Take pan off heat let sit 

2-3 minutes add basil a just seasoning and serve over couscous.
