Nuga Gama, creates history by becoming the first hotel venue to host Muthuhara
Sri Lanka’s most popular children’s television programme Muthuhara broadcasted by Sri Lanka Rupavahini
Corporation (SLRC) selected Cinnamon Grand’s Nuga Gama - (the Village in the City) , for their first live broadcast
on January 1 st 2012.
This is the first time a hotel has been selected as a venue for this renowned children’s programme, since its
inception 30 years ago. The popular programme has a membership of over 600,000 children from different regions
of Sri Lanka as well as overseas.
Muthuhara since its launch in 1982 has provided a base for learning and knowledge sharing for children through
its diverse programmes. It is also a platform to showcase the talents of children, and the overall development of
their personalities, whilst imbuing a sense of Sri Lankan ethos.
“Nuga Gama was chosen to televise the first broadcast for the year, given its strong affiliation with children and
the many programs conducted by the Nuga Gama team to inculcate a sense of pride and appreciation about Sri
lanka’s rich culture, heritage and environment, “ Muthuhara Producer Udantha Gunathilake said.
The one- hour show, broadcasted island wide featured a segment on Nuga Gama and its many attractions and was
presented by children. Over 100 Muthuhara members as well as their parents participated at the event held at
Nuga Gama, Cinnamon Grand.
“We are really honoured that a children’s programme of this repute selected Nuga Gama. This further encourages
and cements our commitment to continue with the various educational and environmental awareness activities,
that we organize for children with input from key resource personnel in the country, “ said Manager Marketing
Communications & Sustainability Tharika Goonathilake.
Given the lack of awareness prevalent among the younger generation on the customs and traditions established
within a village, Nuga Gama opens its doors to educational institutions who may like to experience the true
lifestyles in a village. The concept has become increasingly popular with schools not only within Colombo, but also
from other parts of the country who are interested in learning about a typical Sri Lankan village, its functions, its
people, its habitat and customs.
Monthly environmental events too, continue to be a massive attraction for children who enjoy the interactive
awareness and educational sessions conducted at Nuga Gama.
Nuga Gama also opens its doors to students from the surrounding communities to tour the village and gather
knowledge about the customs, mores and background that make up a real rural village, as visiting an authentic Sri
Lankan village is not an opportunity they would normally have within their school curriculum.
