Assessment
Assembly 3:00 pm
We are beginning to finalize preparations for our State Reading and
Math Assessments. Teachers have been focusing on skills needing
improvement, test taking strategies and practice testing on the
computer. All of this is in addition to the curriculum pacing guides
and all of the other grade level standards needing to be taught for
each grade level. We are making use of every resource we have
available during the next few months! Please make sure you are
doing you part by having your child complete his/her homework,
practice reading at home every night for 30 minutes and memorizing
their basic facts for automaticity-addition, subtraction, multiplication
and division. Look for your postcard coming in the mail!
Our theme this year is "CHAMPS". We have discussed with each
3rd, 4th and 5th grader where they currently are in Reading and Math
and what they need to do in order to achieve. They all have set goals
so that we can win the STATE ASSESSMENT SUPER
BOWL! Join our TEAM and help us achieve!
NEWS ITEM
Super Job!
Jaelynn Price & Manuel Treto
Two students in Stacia Luthi’s fourth-grade class were able to help out with a radio commercial for
improving their reading skills. Manuel Treto and Jaelynn Price created and recorded a radio
advertisement for our school’s partner, Super Car Guys.
Dan Henderson from Super Car Guys held a reading competition for students in Luthi’s class to challenge
students to grow in their reading. The top two students who had the most improvement were able to make
the commercial.
Manuel and Jaelynn went to Entercom Broadcasting to record the commercial and also watched Power
939’s morning show with Greg “The Hitman” Williams and Heather.
News from Mrs. Weishaar in the Library
Wow! Where did February go? This month has flown by with the third through fifth grades
working hard on research skills. Kindergarten through second grades have been reading winter
books and learning about the seasons. Pre-K has been learning about animals and pets. In
addition to all of the learning that is happening in the library, we have all been reading as many
books as possible.
We have checked out over 3,500 books so far this year. The top three titles in the past 30 days
were Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss, Queen of Hearts by Mary Engelbreit, and No! David by
David Shannon. This Friday we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday by reading lots of books.
Also, on Friday, Renaissance is having an event called Read the Most from Coast to Coast and
trying to have this day be the biggest AR quiz taking day in their history. We are trying to help
them out by taking lots of quizzes. Our Wall of Fame for Accelerated Reader points looks
amazing. We have students on the 15 point wall, 25 point wall, 50 point wall and 75 point wall!
Congratulations to Chris Barnes-Mrs. Comstock’s 2 nd gr. on having the highest number of points
for the second month in a row! Keep reading!

Notes from the School Counselor about Bullying
Strategies for parents
Listen attentively to children’s concerns and complaints. Do not dismiss a report as
tattling.
Become informed.
Talk with your child’s teacher, counselor, and/or principal, and be open to concerns
or suggestions made by staff at school.
Be aware of signals- not wanting to go to school, frequent complaints of headaches,
stomach aches, sleeplessness, falling grades, behavior changes- more withdrawn, more
aggressive, crying, unusual signs of fearfulness.
Form alliances with other parents.
Discuss the role of the “witness” with children. A witness is anyone who sees bullying
happening, and is required to act (help the target or tell an adult). Your child can
help STOP bullying for other kids.
Share personal stories of your own experiences and lessons learned.
Model non-bullying behavior
Reinforce empathy skills (putting yourself in another’s shoes) for a child who tends to
bully and reinforce assertive skills for a child who tends to be a target.
To prevent bullying behavior, it is recommended that you provide your children with
basic skills that will be useful to them in their youthful negotiations.
S- Social Skills and Self-Confidence. One of the most productive strategies for children is to have
these basic social skills- manners, courtesy, knowing how to share, and kindness to others.
C- Conflict Resolution. Teach children to express frustration with “I” messages rather than the
confrontational “You” statements. (example: “I feel angry because you wouldn’t play with me.”)
R- Respect for others’ differences. It is important for parents to make contributions to the
classroom environment, by teaching their children respectful attitudes towards adults. Respect should
also include respect for differences (racial, ethnic, religious, cultural, etc).
A- Assertiveness/ Anger Management. Discuss differences between aggressive, passive, and
assertive behavior. Model the how to respond to disagreements. Current influences in the media,
music, TV, movies, and video games send messages of violence as a reaction to frustration. Impulse
control, self-calming, and stress-reduction techniques are valuable skills to instill in children.
P- Problem Solving. Too often, children believe that there is only one way to handle a problem, and
if that doesn’t work, they feel helpless. In every situation there are many options, but consider the
consequences of each option. Thinking before acting is a good pattern to establish.
E- Empathy. Teaching children to put themselves in others shoes. If they can learn to feel what
others might be feeling, it can empower them to deal with any situation.
S- Sexuality. Establishing a comfortable level in discussing matters related to sexuality is key for
parents. If you aren’t giving the explanations, other children will fill the void and you have no control
over the input.
If you have any concerns about bullying, please feel free to contact me! Krista Pepper 973-
