This is exactly what Clarity's Active Reading sets out to achieve. The starting point is to present texts which are relevant, stimulating and lively. Topics range from advertisements for diets to Internet posts on wireless gaming to ecotourism. Text types include newspaper and magazine articles, emails, poems, recipes, stories and press releases. There’s lots of variety, and topics to appeal to every learner. The program focuses on the complete range of reading skills and subskills, from skimming and scanning to topic sentences, prediction and inference. Active Reading intelligently integrates reading with other skills. A text on fashion leads on to an activity where learners create their own advertisement for a watch; a unit on recipes takes students online to research recipes from different countries. This means speaking and writing are key ingredients in each unit. And learners can listen to a range of native speakers reading the texts, helping them to identify sense groups and develop their chunking skills. The program comes at six levels from Elementary to Advanced, with ten units in each level. Each unit starts with a video introduction, moves through controlled practice and comprehension exercises and concludes with a freer activity which expands on the topic. Active Reading can be used for classwork, homework or self-access. The program integrates with Results Manager enabling teachers to track student progress and generate reports. The students who have started using it enjoy doing the exercises and I feel that they are really beginning to show the benefits of using the software. Suzanne Wanzala-Ryan Bradford College Tense Buster helps learners improve their understanding of key grammar areas from Elementary level right through to Advanced. The program is ideal as a self access resource, or integrated into a course of study and used for classwork or homework. Each unit begins with a presentation based on a dialogue, newspaper article or radio broadcast, where learners are encouraged to form theories about how the grammar works. Next comes a grammar rule where they can confirm or correct their theories. Learners then move on to a variety of practice activities in which the language is contextualised and key aspects of form and function are highlighted. Activities provide detailed explanatory feedback to help learners understand where they went wrong, so they can avoid making the same mistakes in future. They can also see and listen to correct answers. Tense Buster includes video-based pronunciation activities, each related to a different aspect of grammar. The program includes listening and speaking activities, and learners can generate tests on single or multiple grammar areas from a test bank of more than 1,600 items.
