CEOs Message
Looking forward
Jennifer Wells
President/CEO
to a successful
New Year in 2013
As another year ends and a new
one begins, the Camarillo Chamber of
Commerce is looking forward to another
exciting and prosperous year. 2012
has certainly had some challenges, especially
with the loss of our Past Chair
Michael Lavenant. But there have been
many successes and progress
as well. The Chamber is looking
to build upon the successes
of 2012 and I am confident
that the only direction to go is
up in 2013. By continuing to
be committed to the success
of our members and the business
community of Camarillo,
the Chamber will work to provide
new and improved programs and
benefits in order to assure a healthy and
strong economy for 2013. I am excited
about the many possibilities for the New
Year!
There are so many good things happening
in our business community, and
I would like to remind our existing and
potential members of all of the benefits
of Chamber membership. Joining and
being part of the Chamber is one of the
best ways to truly be involved in and support
what is happening in the Camarillo
business community. By being part of
the Chamber, you are part of a community
of like-minded business professionals
that all work for the common goal of
making Camarillo the best place to live,
work and play.
I would like to take this opportunity
to share some of the plans for the upcoming
year.
• Our Tourism Program will be
We cannot do what we do
without the support of our
great members...
launched with the new website VisitCamarillo.com.
We have a new Tourism
Marketing Director coming on board,
Anthony McDemas, and in 2013 we
have plans to promote Camarillo with a
Visitors Guide, brochure, and new map –
all using our new tag line of So Much, So
Close.
• Our Business Advocacy Program
will set up several notches with
the addition of Sean Paroski to our staff.
Sean was previously with State Senators
Tony Strickland’s office, and he will be
working to make sure that our Chamber
continues to be a strong advocate for
businesses with government. We will
continue to find ways to connect our
members with our legislators and made
sure that government is business friendly.
• This past year we introduced
new programs such as our Office
Depot discount program,
Chamber trips, and Shred
Day. We will add more ways
to help you save money, run
your business, get value from
your membership. Remember
– you don’t have to come to
events to find value with your
Chamber membership.
• We will continue to provide
ways for you to promote your business.
Last year we changed our newsletters,
introducing The Journal quarterly, the
monthly Acorn and the VC Star inserts.
This year we will step up our online promotion
of our members. We will help
you toot your horn and get your message
out there.
Once again, thanks for your support,
we cannot do what we do without
the support of our great members, and
on behalf of the Camarillo Chamber of
Commerce, I wish everyone a healthy,
happy and prosperous New Year!
Long addresses pension reform at Chamber event
November’s Business @ Breakfast featured
the annual State of the County address
given by District 3 County Supervisor Kathy
Long. Long reported on numerous County
Government issues from budget and pension
reform to development and County agencies.
“This is definitely one of our most popular
breakfasts,” said CEO Jennifer Wells.
“People want to know what’s going on at all
levels of government, and Kathy Long is always
very frank, honest and easy to follow.”
Long described the County pension plan
as a highly sustainable program, governed by
the County Employees Retirement Act of 1937
and not CalPERS, giving the County more control
over pensions and benefits. However they
are still working to improve the plan.
“We’re looking to see what we can
change in the benefit package and have started
bargaining,” Long said. “Employees will eventually
contribute a bigger piece, and the total
savings will be significant.”

About the Chamber
Benefit from your Chamber membership
without breaking the bank...a few tips
Everyone knows the old adage, you
reap what you sow. This is no less true
for membership in your local chamber
of commerce than it is for anything else.
What most people don’t know, however,
is that simply by joining the Chamber
you are already sowing the seeds of
success.
One of the best things about membership
in a chamber of commerce is
that members businesses can choose
their level of involvement, and whether
you attend every event and join three
committees, or never attend anything,
you are still benefitting from your membership.
Here are a few of the benefits
you get just by joining:
1. Immediate listing in the Business
Directory of the high traffic
website, CamarilloChamber.
org. This site is visited by hundreds of
searchers daily looking for things to do,
places to eat, shop or stay, personal and
business services, and more. CamarilloChamber.org
ranks high on all of the
popular search engines and is linked to
from numerous other sites as the place
to go for information. You can also post
your Hot Deals, Job Listings and Events
online!
2. Legitimacy in the eyes of
potential customers. Independent
studies have shown that 59 percent of
consumers think being active in a local
chamber is a sign of good business, and
that it is 26 percent more effective for
communicating a company is reputable.
When consumers know a small business
is a member of the chamber they
are 44 percent more likely to think favorably
of it and 63 percent more likely
to purchase goods or services from it.
(Read the full study at CamarilloChamber.org.)
3. REFERRALS! The Camarillo
Chamber of Commerce is also the local
visitors and city information center. We
receive hundreds of calls and walk-ins
each month from people looking for a
certain type of business. We refer only
to our members, and the public wants to
do business with them because of their
membership in the Chamber.
4. More marketing display
space! As a member of the Camarillo
Chamber of Commerce, you are welcome
to use our office to display your
flyers, business cards, coupons, special
offers, menus, real estate listings...
whatever you have...we will display it
in our lobby or Visitors Center for all
the world to see!
5. A collective voice with government.
We are stronger together
than alone. By joining the Chamber you
are joining your voice to that of hundreds
of other Camarillo businesses,
and even thousands more from Ventura
& Santa Barbara counties, to make sure
business concerns are heard at all levels
of government
Reaping the rewards of Chamber
membership is as easy as one-two-three.
One - pick up or download a membership
application; two - fill out the application
and submit with your tax deductible
membership dues; three - sit back
and enjoy the benefits of membership!
Chamber mourns the
loss of Past Chairman
Michael Lavenant
Past Chairman of the Board Michael
Sean Lavenant, 42 years old, passed
away unexpectedly December 12, at his
home in Camarillo.
Michael has resided in Ventura
County since 1996. He graduated from
Cal State Fullerton, and went to law
school at Southwestern University
School of Law. He was a partner at Landegger,
Baron, Lavenant and Ingber.
Michael joined the Camarillo
Chamber in 2004 and was appointed to
the Board in July 2007 then elected in
July 2008. In 2010 Michael took over as
Chairman during a particularly taxing
period of transition between CEOs. He
led the search for the new CEO and was
ever present to help make the transition
a smooth one.
Michael will always be remembered
having a smile on his face and the
profound effect he had on everyone he
met. He was a very compassionate, kind
and giving person who was greatly involved
in the Camarillo Community. He
is survived by his wife Dana and three
children. Michael will always be in our
hearts and deeply missed by everyone.
Small Business Tips
As small businesses become more
reliant on technology, they also become
more vulnerable to cybercrime. A Gartner
study found that 90 percent of companies
that suffer major data loss close
within two years—but that 80 percent
of business owners have no plan to protect
their data. Here are 10 tips to secure
your business’s computers.
1. Identify security needs and risks.
Inventory your computer equipment,
data and potential risks. Who
is using desktops, laptops, tablets or
smartphones? Where and how are
they being used? What data do you
collect, store or share, and who can
access it? If your computers or network
security were breached, how
would extended downtime, fines or
lawsuits affect your company? A
Symantec study found cyber-attacks
cost small and midsized businesses
an average of $188,242, with downtime
costing $12,500 a day.
2. Begin with the basics. Set up company
computers and devices with
strong passwords, and change them
regularly. Ensure computers and
devices are protected by antivirus,
antispam and antispyware software;
intrusion prevention systems;
encryption technology to protect
email traffic and wireless networks;
and firewalls. AVG, BitDefender,
McAfee, Norton, Symantec and
Trend Micro offer popular security
products.
3. Keep your systems updated. Software
updates often fix security
problems, so download updates as
soon as they become available. To
make this easier, more software programs–including
Windows, Office,
Flash, Java and Adobe Acrobat—
now offer options to download and
install updates automatically; these
can generally be accessed through
“Settings” or “Preferences.”
4. Back up. There’s no excuse not to
back up data when today’s online
backup solutions run unobtrusively
in the background and store information
safely offsite. BackBlaze,
10 Tips to Computer Security
for Your Small Business
Carbonite, Mozy and SpiderOak
are popular online backup services
for small businesses. Ask about file
sharing and sync across multiple
devices and users, how much storage
you get, how easy it is to restore
data, and what backup and disaster
plans the backup company itself has
in place. Double your protection by
backing up to external hard drives in
your office.
5. Educate employees. Even with the
right systems in place, your business
is still vulnerable to human error.
Educate employees about the importance
of using strong passwords and
protecting them. Explain the risks of
opening texts or attachments from
unknown senders, clicking on suspicious
links in emails, or sharing
too much company information on
social networks.
6. Think mobile. If your employees
use mobile devices for business,
install updated security technology,
encrypt data and use virtual private
networks (VPNs) to enable secure
remote access. Remind employees
to be cautious about who may be
watching when they enter passwords
or view confidential data outside the
office.
7. Keep devices safe. While viruses
and hackers capture headlines, the
loss or theft of a physical device is
still the most common cause of data
breaches, according to Symantec.
Remind mobile employees to be
aware of their surroundings and never
leave company laptops, tablets or
cellphones exposed in a vehicle or
unattended. Have them immediately
report lost or stolen devices.
8. Don’t mix business and family.
Working on the same computer your
children use for games or
email puts business data at
risk. Employees who work
at home might have valuable
work data on family computers.
Create rules for how data
can be shared or, if employees
use company computers
to work at home, consider
restricting access to certain
websites or prohibiting use of
those computers for personal
business.
9. Secure your site. Symantec
reports 90 percent of consumers
will leave your site if they
get the warning “This site is
not secure.” Privacy and security
seals show customers
your website is a safe place
to browse or shop. Privacy
seals verify your privacy protection
policy; security seals
verify that you use technology
such as encryption and
regular scans for malware.
McAfee, Norton, Symantec
and TRUSTe are among providers
offering these seals.
10. Get expert help. If you don’t
have an IT person on staff, enlist
an IT consultant or SBDC
Business Advisor to help you
create a computer security
policy. The SBA offers a series
workshops for small business
owners, and the FCC has a
Small Business Tips
Family businesses bring special
rewards, such as inherent trust, the camaraderie
of working with loved ones
and the joy of building a lasting legacy.
However, running a family business
also poses some special challenges. Perhaps
that’s why, according to the Family
Business Institute, fewer than onethird
of family businesses last beyond
the first generation and just 12 percent
survive to the third generation. How
can you make sure your family business
doesn’t fall victim to those odds?
Follow these 10 tips.
1. Run your family business like a
business. If most or all of your key
employees are family members,
it’s easy to get sloppy about things
like keeping your corporation in
compliance, properly documenting
decisions or maintaining accurate
financial records. Always treat your
business like a business.
2. Create a succession plan. If you
want your business to survive, you
must develop a plan for what will
happen when you retire, die or otherwise
exit the company. But a recent
PricewaterhouseCoopers survey
found that nearly half of family
businesses had no succession plan.
Enlist your accountant, attorney, key
employees and family members in
developing a succession plan that
details who will take on key roles.
10 Tips for Growing Your
Family Business
3. Develop leadership among all employees.
Hold regular performance
reviews for family and nonfamily
employees alike. Provide training inhouse,
through local community college
and adult education programs,
or through industry associations to
develop employees’ strengths and
streamline the succession process.
4. Don’t play favorites. If non-family
employees believe they have no
chance of moving up in the company,
they’ll quickly become resentful
and unmotivated. Set a clear path to
promotion and advancement for both
family and non-family employees.
5. Separate business and family expenses.
You might be tempted to
make loans from the company to
family members, or to let them write
off personal expenses (such as the
purchase of a car or vacation home)
as business expenses. Even if such
actions don’t get you in trouble with
the IRS, they will foster resentment
among non-family employees.
6. Set boundaries. Decide when discussing
the business is allowed and
when it’s off-limits (such as during
dinner, or at holiday gatherings).
This helps ensure that family
relationships don’t revolve solely
around business and aren’t poisoned
by business conflicts.
7. Communicate openly. Non-family
employees often feel they’re kept in
the dark about the inner workings of
family businesses. Whenever possible,
share information openly with
family and nonfamily employees
alike.
8. Don’t guarantee employment.
Each family member should have
an opportunity to work in the business,
but not everyone will be suited
to continue doing so. Base hiring
decisions on the business’s – not
the family member’s—needs. Talk
to your attorney about structuring
the business so that nonemployee
family members can still have some
ownership.
9. Learn to resolve conflicts. Business
conflicts can infect family relationships;
family problems can flare up
disguised as business issues. Develop
a plan for dealing with businessrelated
disagreements between family
members, both those who work in
the business and those who do not.
10. Get outside input. Whether you’re
dealing with personal conflicts or
trying to make business decisions,
seeking opinions from trusted outsiders
such as your board of directors
or an SBDC Business Advisor
can give you much-needed perspective.
Harrison Industries looks
ahead on 80 th Anniversary
While Harrison Industries has a history
of successful yesterdays, Harrison
brothers Ralph, Myron and Jim are more
concerned about what the company can
do better with its tomorrows.
The company is celebrating its 80th
anniversary this year.
What began as a one-truck operation
with the late founder E. J. Harrison
hauling trash for his neighbors, the
company now serves more than 90,000
residential and commercial customers
in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties –
including Camarillo – with a fleet of 125
liquefied natural gas.
The company has won numerous
awards at the local, state and national
levels for its innovation and commitment
to a cleaner environment.
While steeped in tradition, Harrison
Industries has thrived over the years
because we are always looking
ahead, vigorously working with
our client cities and the County of
Ventura to reach the state goal of
75 percent recycling by 2020. Camarillo’s
diversion rate already is
at 75 percent.
Our most exciting mission as
we enter our 80th year is working
with strategic partners Agromin
and Limoneria in a two-pronged
effort to reduce waste and create
energy by developing a food waste
program with local businesses.
Food waste is being collected
by Harrison Industries and
taken to Agromin, where a
pilot program is taking place
to see how green waste and
food waste combined in a
covered static pile system
turns out. In the future, this
product will be placed in a
digester to create energy.
Albertsons supermarkets
in Camarillo, Ventura
and Carpinteria were among
the first businesses to join
the pilot program.
In our ongoing public
outreach efforts, in conjunction
with our client cities,
we are expanding our efforts
to inform the citizenry about the importance
of recycling and how to do it.
In addition to recycling newsletters
and other materials produced for our
residential and commercial customers,
we have had a 15-minute video produced
which is available to local cable
TV channels, schools and community
service groups that want to know more
about recycling. The recycling video
also is on our upgraded website that is
also more user-friendly to allow our customers
to order special services online.
Check it out at www.ejharrison.com.
While Harrison will be developing
and undertaking new programs to
reduce waste, create new energy and
improve the environment, it will continue
its decades-long dedication to
Creating strong bonds is an important
step in being successful in business
these days. There are innumerable
options out there for people to choose
from when looking to do business with
a company. Whether purchasing an item
or a service, business-to-business or
business-to-consumer, today’s customer
is an informed and discerning customer.
One of the ways the Camarillo
Chamber helps YOUR business stand
out in the minds of potential customers
is by helping you connect and build
strong working relationships with other
members. When a businessperson is
known by others on a slightly more
personal level, trust is built, and when
people trust you, they will not only use
your services themselves but refer their
friends and family to you as well.
According to a study by the Wharton
School of Business (UPenn), people
trust friends and family more than virtually
any other information source and
referred customers have
a 16 percent higher lifetime
value. Additionally,
research has shown that
customers are five times
more likely to trust peer
recommendations than
other forms of marketing.
Regular attendance
at the Camarillo Chamber’s
Business @ Breakfast
program is one of
the best ways a member
business can build these
important relationships.
The newly reformatted
program focuses more on
members than ever before,
including a Member
Spotlight, Member News
Share, New Member Welcome,
as well as the ever
popular 20 Seconds of
Fame portion of the program.
But there is more.
The morning breakfast
events will also feature
fun, structured, relationship
building exercises to
help everyone know one another better,
information on upcoming events and
programs for members to get more involved,
business tips and tricks from experts,
and slightly longer presentations
for the breakfast sponsors to let everyone
know who they are and what they
do.
With today’s numerous options it
is more important than ever to maintain
2
The Board of Directors for the Camarillo
Chamber of Commerce treated
members to a “holiday party to remember”
on December 11 this year.
“This was the best attended holiday
open house we’ve had in a long time,”
said Jennifer Wells, Chamber CEO.
“Businesses are the reason we exist so to
have so many business members come to
the office and share in the holiday spirit
was really special.”
The Open House ran from 3:30 -
6:30 in the afternoon and over the course
of the day more than 150 representatives
from member businesses stopped by to
partake of food, drinks, door prizes and
cheer.
“We do this every year for our members
to show them how much we appreciate
their support throughout the year,”
said Chairman Charles Sandlin from
Roadrunner Shuttle & Limousine Service.
“It was amazing to me to see how
many of our Chamber friends came out
to join us this year.”
Q: How long have you been a
Chamber member and Ambassador?
A: I have a been a Chamber
member for two years and an Ambassador
for just one year. I am lucky that
my company, Ventura Investment Co allows
me time to be an Ambassador and
network with the Chamber.
Q: What does being a Chamber
Ambassador mean to you?
A: Being an Ambassador allows
me to share my experience with others
and mentor them as I was treated when
I was new to the local area. It’s great to
have the opportunity to welcome them
to our community.
Q: What is your favorite memory
or story of your time as an Ambassador?
A: In November I was working
with FOOD Share to collect nonperishable
foods for those in need when a
Chamber member saw in the weekly
Chamber email that I was collecting.
She had a birthday party and asked her
guests to bring food donation in lieu of
gifts. Imagine my surprise when I returned
to my facility at Store Safe Self
Storage on Camarillo Ranch Road to
see 2 full barrels of donations. I will
and acting as liaisons between the Chamber staff and members.
never forget her selflessness. I hope to
inspire more of our community members
to support each other like this.
Q: What is your personal philosophy,
either in business or life in general?
A: I try to live each day without
regret, to consider other before myself
and always treat other in the manner I
would like to be treated.
Q: What do you like to do in
your spare time?
A: In my spare time, I enjoy
spending time with my husband & traveling,
I enjoy the outside and working/
volunteering my time to assist local non
profits, and networking and events at the
Chamber
Q: Do you have any parting
words of wisdom you would like to impart
to our readership?
A: I think we should all slow
down. Life moves so quickly today that
we often forget the importance of looking
up from our computers, iPads and
televisions to enjoy our surroundings and
those closest to us.
Economic Development
Richard Wagner
Edward Jones Investments
The Economic Development Committee
is comprised of an active group
of community leaders. Our monthly
committee meetings act as a forum with
speakers such as Bruce Stenslie, CEO
of the EDC/VC, Dan LaBrado , General
Manager of the Pleasant Valley Recreation
and Park District, Dennis Hargrave
from Conejo Creek Development, and
Bruce Feng, Camarillo City Manager.
Our goal is to keep our members
informed on various economic
projects that are happening now
or planned for the future, as well
as the efforts of the different agencies
that are working to better the
economy in Camarillo.
In November we hosted our
annual Camarillo Chamber Economic
Development Luncheon with keynote
speaker Assemblyman Jeff Gorell, who
spoke about the California GOLD Team,
and EDC/VC CEO Bruce Stenslie, who
gave an update on the state of the economy
in Ventura County. The results of
our Annual Business Survey were also
presented.
Economic Development
Committee reviews last
six months, looks to future plans
The Chamber has continued to
work with the City of Camarillo on their
Business Visit Program, and we were
able to connect with various businesses
to hear about their businesses, and to offer
any assistance we can to their needs.
In 2012 the State terminated local
redevelopment agencies and took possession
of agency funds. This stopped
many local projects including a hotel
It is critical to support the
ongoing City activities in the
promotion of job growth.
conference center, Old Town improvements,
the Springville area development
and a number of other planned
programs. This is an ongoing challenge
for cities across the State and the City is
continuing to address the need for local
improvements. The Chamber supports
the City in their efforts to navigate the
new regulations resulting from the termination
of the RDAs and moves forward
on possible projects.
We recently formed a task force
to look at Chamber Economic Development
activities for 2013. While we
intend to continue with our monthly
EDC forum on the first Tuesday of every
month at 8:00 a.m., we are assessing
and prioritizing other activities as well.
Our focus is on job creation and retention
in the Camarillo area. We plan
to work with the California GOLD
Team, headed by Assemblyman
Jeff Gorell. It is critical to support
the ongoing City activities in
the promotion of job growth. We
plan to revisit the Chamber vision,
created in 2006, and update the
Chamber Strategic Plan created in 2008.
There will also be improvements in the
Chamber Business Survey process.
It is our intent to have optimal development
plans that are positive, not
only for our business members, but for
the Camarillo community in general.
You are invited to join the committee
and participate in our activities in 2013.
for the Economic Development
Collaborative of Ventura
County addressed the growing
concerns of job creation
and economic growth at the
annual Economic Outlook
Luncheon in November.
Gorell detailed the plans
of the California GOLD
Team, a joint venture with
him, Lieutenant Governor
Gavin Newsom and other parties
at the State Capitol.
“Quality of life begins
discussing how plans to bring
business back to California’s
central coast region will benefit
residents.
Unemployment rates
have been high in California
since the recession began in
2008, but economic growth
has been steadily getting better
Business Advocacy
Chamber hires dedicated staff member for
business advocacy and big business outreach
The Western Association of Chamber Executives points out in their Chamber Toolkit that “Democracy is not a spectator
sport. Businesses must play to make sure they are in the game and influencing the outcome.” As a member of the Camarillo
Chamber, your business is definitely in the game.
The Camarillo Chamber is dedicated to representing business with government in the most effective and strongest manner
possible, so to that end we are welcoming a new staff member to lead our advocacy efforts. Sean Paroski, former Field Representative
for Senator Tony Strickland, is joining the Chamber staff in a newly created position, Government Relations Director.
“We have created this position to bring our advocacy efforts up a notch and better represent our members,” said Chamber
CEO Jennifer Wells. “When we found out Sean was available we jumped at the chance of having such an experienced and well
connected young man in this position.”
Read below to learn a little more about Sean Paroski and his ambitions for this new position.
Q: Where did you go to school?
A: - I went to elementary and middle
school in Camarillo, at El Descanso and
Monte Vista respectively, before moving
to the Santa Paula area where I attended
high school at Nordhoff High. After high
school, I went to Moorpark College before
transferring to a four year university, a path
I highly recommend to everyone thinking
about college, especially with tuition costing
the equivalent of a new car every year.
At CSU Northridge, where I ended up, I got
my Bachelors in mathematics.
Q: What were you doing before joining
the Camarillo Chamber team.
A: Most recently I worked for State Senator
Tony Strickland as a field representative
for the Ventura County portion of the then
19th Senate District. I represented the senator
at official functions when he was away
in Sacramento, including many with the Camarillo
Chamber. I also kept him informed
of various issues at the city and county level
and how state legislation was impacting our
local community.
Before that, I worked for the United Water
Conservation District in Santa Paula, where
I worked with them on environmental regulatory
issues involving endangered species.
Q: What are your aspirations for this
job – what would you like to accomplish
while working at the Chamber?
A: I want to help grow the Chamber, both
in terms of its total membership as well as
its ability to continue to be an effective advocate
for business, at the local, state and
federal level. With a new set of legislators
elected here in Ventura County, it will
be important for us to build close working
relationships with them to make sure the
business community in Camarillo has an
advocate in the legislature when decisions
impacting us are being made.
Q: What special skills do you bring to
the Chamber – what do you like to do in
your job?
A: During my time with the State Senate,
I had the opportunity to work closely with
all the Chambers of Commerce in Ventura
County as well as the business community
at large. I’m familiar both with the needs
of business in our area and how what happens
in Sacramento and Washington affects
them. Despite the rancor in the Legislature,
I was able to develop good relationships
with the staff of all our area legislators, both
Democrat and Republican. I simply like
working with people and I can get along
with practically anyone in order to get the
job done.
Q: What is your personal philosophy,
either in business or life in general?
A: - I’m very much a community
man, by which I mean that I love where
I was born and raised and I want to make
sure that I leave with some kind of lasting
improvement. I think the only way you can
make a real difference in life is by putting
down roots and investing in your city and
neighborhood. Unless we are very extraordinary
people (which by definition most of
us aren’t), our reach will not often exceed
our families, our work and our immediate
circle of friends and coworkers. We can do
great things by loving and trying to improve
the lives of those closest to us, without worrying
about how to reshape the world.
Paroski has already been active in
teh Chamber serving as co-chair of
hte Education Committee. Here is
is as the MC of the November 2012
Educator of hte Month award.
Q: What do you like to do in your spare
time?
A: - I am a voracious reader, and I try
to get my hands on as many books as possible.
I also love to hike and get outdoors
when I can. I enjoy working with my hands
as well, and while fixing plumbing or electrical
can in no way be described as fun,
there is a certain satisfaction in solving a
problem.
Q: Do you have any parting words of
wisdom you would like to impart to our
readership?
A: I’m afraid I don’t have much wisdom
to give. Philosophizing was never
my strong suit. George Orwell said that
“to see what is in front of one’s nose needs
a constant struggle,” so I try to concentrate
on what’s in front of me. Plus, I’m a very
clumsy person, so this makes excellent practical
advice as well.
Business Advocacy
In light of the outcomes of the recent
elections, the region’s business community
has our work cut out for us in 2013.
Although, Chamber Alliance-endorsed
lawmakers Congressman Buck
McKeon and Assemblyman Jeff Gorell
got reelected, the Chamber Alliance lost
a reliable pro-job creation vote in Tony
Strickland who narrowly lost his bid for
Congress against Assemblywoman Julia
Brownley. Sen. Strickland’s old seat will
be represented by Senator-elect Hannah
Beth Jackson.
Furthermore, Democrats have
achieved a rare two-thirds majority in
both the State Senate and Assembly in
addition to the governor’s office. Among
other things, two thirds majorities will
Election outcomes demonstrate
need for more advocacy
Brendan Huffman
Executive Director
make it far easier for taxes to be
raised and emergency legislation to be
passed resulting in such bills taking effect
as soon as they are signed into law.
As for ballot measures, the Chamber
Alliance is pleased that voters rejected
Prop. 37 that would have forced
food retailers to ensure that genetically
modified food products they sell to be
properly labeled by farmers and food
producers—or face private right of action
lawsuits. Voters also rejected Prop.
38 that would have raised income taxes
but approved Prop. 40 to keep the state
senate boundaries as drawn up last year
by the independent Citizens Redistricting
Commission.
Looking ahead, the Chamber Alliance
is seeking to increase our presence in
Sacramento next year to ensure that our
region’s business perspective is considered
more often in the legislative process.
And we are weighing strategies to
engage our lawmakers more often when
they are in their districts.
Nevertheless, it is more important
than ever that our chambers be effective
advocates for business. The Chamber Alliance
is here to help all of our chambers
raise the bar on their advocacy efforts,
so please let us know how we can assist
your chamber as we head into 2013.
CalChamber Vote Record: Major Bills 2012
The Journal Winter 2013
30
This report for the second year of
the 2011–2012 legislative session focuses
on California legislators’ floor votes on
California Chamber of Commerce priority
bills. This is the 38th vote record the
CalChamber has compiled. The CalChamber
publishes this report in response to
numerous requests by member firms and
local chambers of commerce that would
like a gauge by which to measure the
performance of their legislators. To help
readers assess legislators’ vote records, the
charts group bills into six areas: economic
development, environmental regulation,
labor and employment, legal, taxation and
workers’ compensation.
Partial Picture
No vote record can tell the entire story
of a legislator’s attitude and actions on issues
of importance to business. Each year,
legislators cast thousands of votes on thousands
of proposed laws. To fully evaluate
your legislative representative, consult the
legislative journals and
examine your legislator’s
votes in committee and on
floor issues. You can view
these via links at www.
calchambervotes.com.
Many anti-business bills were rejected
by legislators in policy or fiscal committees,
thus stopping proposals before they
reached the floor for a vote. The vote record
does not capture these votes.
Most bills in this report cover major
business bills that are of concern to both
small and large companies. The CalChamber
recognizes that there are many bills
supported or opposed by business that are
not included in this vote record and analysis.
Factors Considered
The CalChamber considers the following
factors in selecting vote record bills:
● The bills and votes reflect legislators’
attitudes toward private enterprise, fiscal
responsibility and the business climate.
● Each bill was a priority for the Cal-
