Development<br />
<strong>The</strong> first Development Director for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ashmolean</strong>, Edith Prak, took up her<br />
post in March 2003. Consequently all areas <strong>of</strong> fundraising in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong><br />
are currently under review. An application was made to <strong>the</strong> Heritage Lottery<br />
Fund in June for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ashmolean</strong> Plan (see Director’s <strong>Report</strong>). <strong>The</strong> <strong>Museum</strong><br />
requested <strong>the</strong> sum <strong>of</strong> £23 million to redevelop <strong>the</strong> back <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> building,<br />
create an Education Centre and Conservation Studios and excavate <strong>the</strong><br />
basement. A preliminary decision on <strong>the</strong> bid is expected in January 2004.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> is deeply grateful to <strong>the</strong> trustees <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Linbury Trust, which so<br />
generously supported <strong>the</strong> preparatory work for <strong>the</strong> application.<br />
In June around 20 representatives <strong>of</strong> local businesses came to <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Museum</strong> for breakfast to encourage support for exhibitions and to make<br />
people aware <strong>of</strong> our corporate hire facilities. <strong>The</strong> occasion has led to some<br />
very fruitful discussions and we aim to repeat this event twice a year.
