for a papal tomb); £1500 towards a pencil portrait <strong>of</strong> Lady Holland by G.F.<br />
Watts; £10,000 towards an Eric Gill sketchbook dated 1928-30; and £5000<br />
towards a plein-air oil sketch by Giovanni Costa entitled Ruins in <strong>the</strong> Colli<br />
Albani. £20,000 has also been promised towards <strong>the</strong> purchase <strong>of</strong> a pair <strong>of</strong> late<br />
15th-century Florentine spalliera panels if <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> is able to raise <strong>the</strong><br />
remainder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> price.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Young Friends were again able <strong>the</strong>mselves to make a purchase<br />
grant, this time buying outright for £400 a portfolio <strong>of</strong> two prints by Tom<br />
Slaughter, a contemporary printmaker working in New York.<br />
<strong>The</strong> activities organized for both Friends and Young Friends continue<br />
to be very popular with members; several <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m have been repeated, to try<br />
to avoid disappointing those who have not been able to get tickets.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> is deeply indebted to its many Friends who give so<br />
generously <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir time to help raise much needed funds for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ashmolean</strong>.<br />
Elias Ashmole Group<br />
<strong>The</strong> Elias Ashmole Group has had a successful year with membership now<br />
exceeding 100 members. <strong>The</strong>re were several events organised for <strong>the</strong> Group<br />
throughout <strong>the</strong> year. <strong>The</strong> annual Dinner took place in <strong>the</strong> Randolph<br />
Sculpture Gallery at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> in October and was attended by many <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Group’s members.<br />
<strong>The</strong> annual Elias Ashmole Group spring trip took place over <strong>the</strong> May<br />
Bank Holiday weekend. This year <strong>the</strong> group went to Bavaria and visited<br />
Würzburg, Pommersfelden, Nüremberg and Bamburg. Chris Rümelin, <strong>the</strong><br />
print curator, and <strong>the</strong> Director accompanied <strong>the</strong> trip.<br />
In June <strong>the</strong> Group were invited to a special private view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
exhibition <strong>The</strong> Daisy Linda Ward Collection <strong>of</strong> Dutch and Flemish, Flower and<br />
Still Life Paintings from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ashmolean</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> at <strong>the</strong> John Mitchell and Son<br />
Gallery in London.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Elias Ashmole Trust was able to award £44,000 in grants towards<br />
several key areas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> including part funding a two-year assistant<br />
post in <strong>the</strong> Western Art Print Room and contributing £20,000 to provide<br />
seed-corn funding for <strong>the</strong> organisation <strong>of</strong> exhibitions at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong>.<br />
Twenty-eight members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Elias Ashmole Group have made significant<br />
contributions to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ashmolean</strong> Plan Development Fund this year. <strong>The</strong><br />
<strong>Museum</strong> is deeply grateful to <strong>the</strong>m all.<br />
Grants and Donations<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Ashmolean</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> continued to benefit from <strong>the</strong> generosity <strong>of</strong> our<br />
donors. A large part <strong>of</strong> our core funding is provided by <strong>the</strong> Higher Education<br />
Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and Oxford University. We are
