UNPACKING THE OVERLOADED HOUSE
PRIVATE RESIDENCE
GALLERY / STUDIO
This project seeks to break down
the idealized single family home
into its most basic components -
hearth, threshold, structure, enclosure,
utility. These components are
initially analyzed and defined in
two case studies, and later used to
develop an intervention within the
context of St Louis’ Grand Center.
Addressing the cultural instituations
in the immediate context, as
well as the shifting demographic,
an X-program gallery/studio space
serves to interface between the
public and private. The home is
allowed to operate independently
of this public element, attracting a
long-term resident who can invest
in and benefit from the growing
artistic community, without sacrificing
the safety and comforts of a
detached home in a largely deurbanized
part of the city.
PARCO DELLE CASCINE
In redesigning the interface of Cascine Park
with the periphery of the historic center of
Florence, this project addresses the role of
greenspaces within the urban fabric, paying
special attention to paces of occupation -
walking, jogging, biking, and relaxing. Recognizing
the need for an integrative design
approach toward permanent interventions,
the ‘fold’ is adapted as a seating strategy. By
developing a system of material applications
that would allow for ease of transition, it
achieves a gradient between the urban environment
to the East and the rest of the park.
This landscape acts as a connective tissue
for these disparate typologies, taking into
account accessibility from public transportation
and burgeoning infrastructure to the
North, including the new Parco della Musica.
RTE 66 BRIDGE
1915 INTAKE TOWER
In siting an intervention along the
Chain of Rocks Route 66 Bridge,
the Illinois bank of the Mississippi
River allows for multiple scales of
observation - the immediate conditions
of the water’s edge, as well as the
monumental bluffs to the North of
the site. The interaction of sand and
water on the site served as both a
programmatic material study as well as
the source of a structural framework
FA13
for the formal intervention itself.
The design expresses the phenomena of
this interaction in the way that sand, a
solid with properties of fluid movement,
can take on rigid and even structural
geometric forms when introduced to a
proportional amount of water. Material
considerations were driven by the ability
of the decayed inner form to be obscured
by a translucent exterior shell. When lit
from within, the inner complexities are
revealed, projected onto the exterior.
Perched atop the bridge, the worskpace
allows for further studies of the shifting
geometries of the river as sediment is
FA13
deposited and washed away over time.

SOULARD VERTICAL GREENHOUSE
The initial phases of this project relied on an understanding
of controlled environments in order to create
a self-contained system specific to the plant. The
“Nerve plant” eco-unit is made up of three planting
spaces, linked by channels that filter the heat given
off by the two lower plants into the upper chamber.
This creates an environment humid enough that the
third plant requires no maintenance.
The most challenging aspect of the site is its narrow
dimension as the lot of a former townhome. In order to
maximize the lot’s potential for an urban greenhouse,
a series of sectional metal louvers reflect light down
into the narrow space. Additionally, the roofline is
designed to channel rainwater via the louvers toward
the back of the structure and into a reservoir accessible
from the lowest level - facilitating the growth and
study of aquatic and shade-dwelling species as well.

DEMUN PARK REDESIGN
The Demun Park project began with a formmaking
exercise, resulting in a modular component, from
which the site application would build. Inspired
by the conventional components of a wall framing
system, the module allows for multiple configurations
of linear and planar elements, which when
aggregated, allow for studies of light, shadow,
and structural integrity. Moving to the site, this
logic is applied to the landscape of an existing
playgriound in a thriving Saint Louis neighborhood.
Conducive to nighttime entertainment, and
family-friendly programming, the intervention
seeks to improve the 24-hour utility of the space.
WELLSTON LOOP COMMUNITY GARDEN
The Wellston Loop historic district of Saint Louis, once a
bustling town center, is largely abandoned, presenting an
opportunity to inspire community revival. The lot at the
corner of Martin Luther King and Hodiamont seeks to spark
a renewed interest in one of the city’s most economically
desolate neighborhoods. The introduction of a community
garden and educational facility urges residents to again
take pride in their community, and allows them to take
agency, addressing issues of poverty, hunger, and overall
decline in an environmentally and socially conscious way.
Following a study of farming practices and growth patterns,
a formal strategy was developed through exercises
in paper folding and wire modeling. This construction was
then applied to the site within the context of the existing
taxonomy of “natural” and “foreign” elements.
FURNITURE DESIGN
Drawing on the form of a
largely forgotten typology -
the Porter’s chair, my design
simplifies the proportions,
maintaining a sense of enclosure
and isolation for the inhabitant.
Orinigally designed
for French royal guards, the
simplified form gives way to
a revised, more relevant program
that can be aggregated
and implemented both in the
home and in public spaces.
