e heard that… ...it’s sniffles season! The flu, or influenza, infects the upper respiratory tract and sometimes the lungs. This disease is very dangerous and very contagious. You might have the flu if your nose is stuffed up and congested, your throat hurts, you’re sneezing more than usual, you have a high fever, your body aches, you’re coughing, or your chest or head hurt. If you think you have the flu, see your doctor as soon as you can! Of course, you can avoid getting the flu in the first place by taking some very simple precautions. Always wash your hands when you come home from school, practice, shopping, or work. Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and nose. You can also get a flu shot, but talk to your parents and do some research to see if you really should get it. We here at H&N hope you wish you the best of health this winter! The editors and I have been working very hard, and I think it’s a great issue, and a continuation of the leap in progress we took over the summer. One of the things I love about being the editor in chief is that I get to tell stories to thousands of girls my age across Northern California. Ever since I was little, I’ve loved reading and writing stories, and now I get to tell them. But I also get to hear stories; stories from girls who want help from Julie, stories from our next celebrity, stories of grace and heroism from the council—all these stories have been passed to me as a part of my position. That’s right; we’re no longer working with Little Brownie Bakers. Instead, our cookies will be made by ABC Bakers. Based in Virginia, the ABC Bakers started making cookies for Girl Scouts in 1939. That’s almost 70 years of Girl Scout cookies! But they never get tired of it, and they’re bringing their enthusiasm to GSHCC. The theme this year is “Ready, Set, Go!” If you’re worried about the cookies, don’t be; we at H&N tried some and found them quite delicious. The fl avors are: Thin Mints Carmel deLites Peanut Butter Patties Shortbread Peanut Butter Sandwiches Thanks-A-Lots Lemonades Cinna-Spins They have a great website—even a non-corny section just for teens—that can give you any information you want to know about cookies. The website also has ideas for selling cookies and has some fun games to play. Visit it at www.ABCsmartcookies.com, and come January, start selling those cookies! …the cookie incentives have taken a spin! This year, as you diligently get out in the community and sell cookies, you might set your sights a little higher…here is a sneak peak at some of the big incentives you might have your eye on. If you sell: 1,000 boxes of cookies this year and you get a personal DVD player 1,600 boxes and go on the Exclusive Top Seller Mystery Trip! (details to follow) 2,000 boxes of cookies sold this year gets you a new laptop!
Are you up for a great challenge? We will climb Half Dome in Yosemite National Park, July 28th, 2008 and we want you to be part of this adventure. How: Register on the council Web site at www.girlscoutshcc.org Who: Any Girl Scout 14 years of age or older Cost: Deposit is $10.00. Fees for the event will be determined at our fi rst meeting. When: As a patrol for Girl Scouts Heart of Central California, we will meet every month before the trip (starting in February 2008) to monitor the fees and physical capabilities of each member. Deadline: March 1, 2008 This event involves 6 months of planning and preparation. We will travel each month to new locations to try out our hiking skills and build strength for our 16.8 miles roundtrip hike to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite. What a wonderful time to be a part of a unique patrol. They meet about every other month to discuss what they want Girl Scouts to do for them and help the council plan events. Recently, they have met at cool places around Sacramento like The Hard Rock Café and IKEA. Their job is to get together and talk about what types of cool events they want to go to and what they want the event calendar to look like. When a new item is coming to The Girl Scout Shop, they get to vote on colors and styles. Sound like something you want to get involved in?
