NEW COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING - QATAR UNIVERSITY | CASE STUDY
THE CONCEPT
The design philosophy was
derived from existing environmental
elements in regards to
the location, as well as the level
of education and the needs of
both students and faculty. The
college is formed by three parallel
buildings (or educational
wings) connected by a spine.
The wings are oriented along an
East-West axis that offers larger
north and south façades. These
wings house the six departments:
Electrical and Computer
Engineering in the first, Architecture
and Chemical Engineering
in the second, and Civil
and Mechanical-Industrial
Engineering in the third.
THE DETAILS
The East-West axis offers
decreased penetration of the sun,
while the northern façade provides
shading elements to the rest of the
building. New screens were incorporated
into the southern façades to
decrease further impact of heating
and thermal exposure. This is
echoed in the landscaping around
the building which mimics the shape
of intersected circles designed to
perpetuate the overall theme of connected
modules.
The theme is also evident inside
the building, which is divided into
sections for male and female students
and faculty linked by shared
common areas. This helps to ensure
that both interior and exterior are
harmoniously linked.
