FRONT | DECEMBER PEOPLE Rod Stewart takes the hot seat. Atkins appoints new Qatar MD Atkins has appointed Rod Stewart as the new managing director to head up its expanding Qatar operations. In the past 18 months, Atkins’ operations in Qatar have quadrupled in size, growing to approximately 400 employees. In January of this year Atkins was awarded a three-year contract by the country’s Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning, to establish a Central Planning Office (CPO) to co-ordinate major multi-billion dollar transport and infrastructure project. Stewart was formerly a group production director at Wates Group. Commenting on the role, Stewart said that he was excited and motivated by the opportunity presented by Atkins in Qatar. He added: “The business has developed an excellent platform for strong and sustainable growth in what is undoubtedly one of the most vibrant markets in the world for our sector.” Hadid feels shunned by Arab world Iraq-born superstar architect Zaha Hadid has expressed her disappointment at being underutilised by Middle East clients. During a RIBA conference in the UK, Hadid was quoted as saying: “I think the Arab world has not really made use of me very much, which is a shame and a great loss to me.” She stated that, as an Arab, she wants to contribute to the societies in the Middle East and North Africa. “It’s not for the leadership, it’s for the people, and any project in that part of the world would be an improvement,” she added. Hadid’s practice has bid to design a 45,000-seat stadium for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with the winner to be announced at the end of the year. She has also designed the completed Sheikh Zayed Bridge in Abu Dhabi, as well as the Performing Arts Centre on Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi. Why do you think it deserved these awards All aspects of design have been through a rigorous inspection from the bottom up in terms of energy and making sure the solar lights are efficient. The whole lighting has generated a really sustainable building and we are incredibly proud of it. What was one of the most challenging aspects of the design The amount of effort that went into the façade design to ensuring there was energy going into the building was incredible and we looked at many different variations of how to do it. That is one reason why the façade looks a little bit odd - it has been crafted to make sure the solar energy use is at the right level.
