STEERING YOUR WAY INTO A
HIGH-DEMAND PROFESSION
Today’s new breed of engineers is presented with
a range of challenges. Wayne State University
stands ready to help. Through an innovative
multidisciplinary approach, WSU provides its
Alternative Energy Technology students with a
well-rounded curriculum. Whether you’re enrolled
in an undergraduate or graduate program, you’ll
gain experience in all types of engineering required
for a successful AET career — including mechanical,
electrical, chemical and industrial.
ALTERNATIVE ENERGY
TECHNOLOGY
Ever since the U.S. government identified the
development of new energy sources as a national
priority, Wayne State has been a key player. In fact,
WSU established the country’s first AET degree
program in 2004. Then, in 2010, it became the first
university to launch a comprehensive Electric-drive
Vehicle Engineering curriculum, thanks in part to
a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department
of Energy.
VISION
Wayne State’s Alternative Energy
Technology (AET) curriculum is
designed to be a premier program in
alternative energy research, education
and outreach with a mission:
s Educate and prepare a technical and
scientific workforce for the emerging
alternative energy technology
s Mobilize resources to develop
interdisciplinary research programs
s Disseminate technical information
and raise public awareness of the
emerging AET
FAST FACTS
s Choose from AET Master of Science
and AET Graduate Certificate
s Flexible scheduling makes it possible
to juggle school and work
s Hands-on learning in new $1.2
million teaching laboratory
s Proximity to major automotive
industry is key to collaboration,
internships and careers
s Nation’s first multidisciplinary
Electric-drive Vehicle Engineering
degree program, supported in part
by a $5 million grant from the U.S.
Department of Energy
s Strong commitment to discovery:
The College of Engineering spends
more than $20 million each year
on research
FACILITIES
In addition to the $28 million Marvin
I. Danto Engineering Development
Center — with 83,000 square feet of
classroom and laboratory space for
research on fuel cells, nanotechnology,
smart sensors and bioengineering —
the College of Engineering has invested
$1.2 million in new equipment for
its Electric-drive Vehicle Engineering
and AET programs. A state-of-the-art
teaching lab gives students access to
the latest technology, allowing them to
apply classroom lessons to experiential
learning.
FACULTY
The College of Engineering’s
AET faculty stands ready to
help you get the world moving
in new ways. With a keen
interest in discovery through
research combined with a
desire to educate those who
will advance this field, our
faculty is perfectly positioned
to help students succeed.
DEGREE
PROGRAM
The Master of Science and Graduate
Certificate programs are open to
students with a bachelor’s degree
in engineering or, with approval,
other mathematics-based sciences. A
minimum GPA of 3.0 is required to
enroll in the Master’s program and 2.7
for the Graduate Certificate, although
lower GPAs combined with significant
relevant professional experience may be
considered. Admission to the graduate
programs is contingent upon admission
to the WSU Graduate School.
