Dear Doctor,<br />

A case <strong>of</strong> meningococcal disease from your locality has recently been notified, in a baby/<br />

pre-school child/school child/young adult/adult.<br />

It is recommended that when meningococcal infection is suspected, a single dose <strong>of</strong> benzylpenicillin should be<br />

given immediately intramuscularly or (preferably) intravenously.<br />

An appropriate dose is-<br />

For adults <strong>and</strong> children 10 years <strong>and</strong> over<br />

For children aged 1 - 9 years<br />

For infants<br />

1200 mg (2 mega units)<br />

600 mg<br />

300 mg<br />
