Powers Awards<br />

The Powers Awards are presented in recognition of the significant contributions lottery <strong>and</strong> vendor employees have made through exceptional<br />

job performance. These awards are named in honor of the late Edward J. Powers, the “Father of U.S. Lotteries.” Ed spent more than 25<br />

years in the lottery industry helping to define the most effective organizational structures that have become a blueprint for today’s lotteries.<br />

Ed Powers’ name is synonymous with success. The drive, commitment <strong>and</strong> integrity he demonstrated set the st<strong>and</strong>ard of excellence exhibited<br />

by lottery <strong>and</strong> vendor employees nominated for this prestigious award. Each year, lottery directors <strong>and</strong> members of lottery executive<br />

management teams have the opportunity to nominate employees <strong>and</strong> vendor personnel who have made outst<strong>and</strong>ing contributions to<br />

their lottery organizations or to the industry.<br />

All lottery <strong>and</strong> vendor employees, with the exception of lottery directors, general managers, commissioners, board members or vendor<br />

chief executive officers, are eligible to be nominated for the Powers Awards. Conference Host staff members are also eligible.<br />

The Powers Awards entries are represented within five main categories: Sales, Marketing, Operations, Administration, <strong>and</strong> Public <strong>and</strong> Community<br />

Relations.<br />

A total of 15 awards may be presented – one each to a Lottery Employee, an Online Vendor Employee <strong>and</strong> an Offline Vendor Employee, in<br />

each of five categories:<br />

1. Sales<br />

Sales, corporate accounts, telemarketing, field reps., etc.<br />

2. Marketing<br />

Marketing, promotions, special events, etc.<br />

3. Operations<br />

Prize validation, purchasing, information systems, security, inventory, warehouse, etc.<br />

4. Administration<br />

Human resources, accounting, legal, legislative liaison, contracts, research, training, etc.<br />

5. Public <strong>and</strong> Community Relations<br />

Criteria for Judging Powers Awards<br />

All nominations will be reviewed by a panel of judges who are not currently serving as lottery CEOs, but who have done so in the past.<br />

Nominations for Powers Awards will be evaluated <strong>and</strong> winners will be selected by a panel of former lottery directors.<br />

Judges will select winners who have demonstrated sustained achievement <strong>and</strong> exceptional performance in any of these important areas:<br />

• Organization or supervision of other employees’ performance leading to outst<strong>and</strong>ing accomplishments.<br />

• Recognizable cost savings or sales increases.<br />

• Originality in developing <strong>and</strong> improving procedures, equipment or products.<br />

• Significantly exceeding job requirements <strong>and</strong>/or enhancing favorable public relations with external organizations.<br />

Nomination Requirements<br />

• The individual(s) nominated must meet eligibility requirements.<br />

• Nominations for the Powers Awards may be made by any member of a lottery’s Executive Management team with the concurrence of<br />

the CEO. Nomination forms must be signed by the lottery CEO.<br />

• Attach a one-page statement (electronic word document only) about the nominated individual that details the major distinguishing<br />

accomplishment performed within the period <strong>and</strong> why the individual should be considered for this award. Describe the circumstances<br />

that led to the action or achievement, the role the nominee played or how the results affected the organization. Indicate how the<br />

accomplishment impacted the nominee’s personal growth.<br />

• Include one photo (electronic format only) with the nominee’s name affixed for each nomination.<br />
