WORK EXPERIENCE – ASSESSMENT
OF PREVIOUS WORK EXPERIENCE
(REALKOMPETANSE)
If you were born before 1978 and have not
previously completed upper secondary school
education you have a legal right to a free
assessment of your education and work experience.
This is the so called right of adults. Hordaland
fylkeskommune/Hordaland County Council will
offer you adult education built on your previous
knowledge and (work) experience.
After assessing your experience you may be
given a certificate of expertise which documents
the knowledge you have. This may be used as
documentation when applying for jobs and further
education. For instance, university.

FINANCING STUDIES
(STUDIEFINANSIERING)
A relatively small semester fee must be paid at
the higher educational institutions. Books may be
borrowed from the library or they may be bought.
Good grants and student loan schemes are available
from Lånekassen/The Norwegian State Educational
Loan Fund to finance your studies. For instance,
interest on student loans is frozen while you study.

LANGUAGE TUITION
(SPRÅKOPPLÆRING)
People who come from other EU/EEA/EFTA
countries will not get their expenses for Norwegian
tuition covered by the state.
Some employers choose to cover their employee’s
expenses for language courses. Talk to your
employer about this.
In Bergen several language schools offer
Norwegian tuition.

(Nygård skole)
The school provides tuition at all levels in
Norwegian and social studies for all adults over
16-years-old, from students with little or no school
background from their home country to those
who have a background from colleges of higher
education and university from their home country.
The school provides its services in the mornings,
afternoons or evenings.
