WORK EXPERIENCE – ASSESSMENT<br />
OF PREVIOUS WORK EXPERIENCE<br />
(REALKOMPETANSE)<br />
If you were born before 1978 and have not<br />
previously completed upper secondary school<br />
education you have a legal right to a free<br />
assessment of your education and work experience.<br />
This is the so called right of adults. Hordaland<br />
fylkeskommune/Hordaland County Council will<br />
offer you adult education built on your previous<br />
knowledge and (work) experience.<br />
After assess<strong>in</strong>g your experience you may be<br />
given a certificate of expertise which documents<br />
the knowledge you have. This may be used as<br />
documentation when apply<strong>in</strong>g for jobs and further<br />

FINANCING STUDIES<br />
(STUDIEFINANSIERING)<br />
A relatively small semester fee must be paid at<br />
the higher educational <strong>in</strong>stitutions. Books may be<br />
borrowed from the library or they may be bought.<br />
Good grants and student loan schemes are available<br />
from Lånekassen/The Norwegian State Educational<br />
Loan Fund to f<strong>in</strong>ance your studies. For <strong>in</strong>stance,<br />
<strong>in</strong>terest on student loans is frozen while you study.<br />

LANGUAGE TUITION<br />
(SPRÅKOPPLÆRING)<br />
People who come from other EU/EEA/EFTA<br />
countries will not get their expenses for Norwegian<br />
tuition covered by the state.<br />
Some employers choose to cover their employee’s<br />
expenses for language courses. Talk to your<br />
employer about this.<br />
In <strong>Bergen</strong> several language schools offer<br />
Norwegian tuition.<br />

(Nygård skole)<br />
The school provides tuition at all levels <strong>in</strong><br />
Norwegian and social studies for all adults over<br />
16-years-old, from students with little or no school<br />
background from their home country to those<br />
who have a background from colleges of higher<br />
education and university from their home country.<br />
The school provides its services <strong>in</strong> the morn<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />
afternoons or even<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
