Game Preview / Week 1
The Thiel Tomcats ended a long losing streak in 2012
and went on to win three conference games on the
season. This season, the Tomcats look to build on last
year’s success, beginning with Saturday’s game against the
Juniata College Eagles, who escaped Greenville a season
ago with a slim 16-13 victory in the opening game for
both teams.
The Tomcats enter Saturday’s game with 21 seniors on
the roster and 18 returning starters from a season ago.
Ten of the returning starters are on offense, which is
led by senior quarterback Andrew Smith, who threw
for 1,399 yards in 2012. Also back on offense is Smith’s
favorite target, senior tight end Berend Grube, and
running back Josh Potter, who ran for a season-high
139 yards in Week 10 last year.
Thiel returns seven starters on defense from 2012, but
must find a way to replace the production of Tim Taylor,
the program’s career leader in sacks and tackles for loss,
who was lost due to graduation.
Quarterback Ward Udinski is back to lead Juniata this
season after leading the Eagles with 2,429 yards in the air
and 458 yards on the ground in 2012. Also returning for
the Eagles is running back Zach McCaulley, who ran for
120 yards on 26 carries against the Tomcats last year.
While Udinski is a threat throwing and running, he will
be without his top four receivers from a year ago in 2013
while the Tomcats come into Saturday’s game with five
veterans in the secondary.

The Tomcats suffered a heartbreaking 16-13
loss to the Juniata Eagles in their 2012 season
opener at Alumni Stadium in Greenville, Pa.
The Tomcats held a 7-6 halftime lead thanks to
Taylor Fink’s 6-yard touchdown run early in the
second quarter.
The Thiel defense held the Eagles to a pair of
field goals in the first half, one from 28 yards and
the other from 26 yards.
The Tomcat offense embarked on an 8-play,
67-yard drive to open the third quarter. The drive
culminated with Fink’s second touchdown run
of the game, this one on a 1-yard plunge. The
extra point was no good, but the Tomcats held
a 13-6 lead.
Juniata tied up the contest, 13-13, late in the
third quarter on a one-yard run by quarterback
Ward Udinski.
The Eagles earned the eventual game-winning
points on the toe of Scott Andrews, who booted
a 27-yard field goal with 4:56 remaining in regulation.
Thiel’s offense had two more drives down the
stretch but neither resulted in any points. On
the Tomcats’ final drive, which began on their
1-yard line, quarterback Andrew Smith led the
Tomcats all the way down to the Juniata 37-yard
line, but his pass into the end zone for a potential
game-winning TD lob fell incomplete as time
expired.
21 Seniors
The Tomcats will take to the field Saturday with
21 seniors on the roster, the most in recent
years.
Smith’s Progression
Among Thiel’s 21 seniors this season is quarterback
Andrew Smith, who completed 154 of
259 passes in 2012 for 1,399 yards and four TD
passes.
Smith’s Targets
Smith will have nearly all of his weapons back
from a season ago, including tight end Berend
Grube, who led the team with 34 catches and
325 yards a season ago. Also returning are
senior receivers Matt Fedzen, Bill Frizzi and
Nate Blazevich.
Crystol Preseason All-American
Tomcat junior offensive lineman Jason Crystol
was named a fourth-team preseason All-
American by USA Football News in July. Crystol
was also a second-team All-PAC pick following
his sophomore season.
All-PAC Returners
Seven All-PAC players return to the Tomcats
this season, led by Crystol, who was a secondteam
selection. Returning All-PAC honorable
mention selections include: Jordan Fortuna,
Grube, Cody McClelland, Jack Sindlinger,
Tom Thorpe and Martae Hainesworth.
Potter’s Potential
Tomcat tailback Josh Potter finished the 2012
season with his best game when he ran for 139
yards on 18 carries against Grove City in the
final week of the 2012 season. He also ran for a
touchdown in the game and rattled off a seasonlong
50-yard run.
Field Goals
The Tomcats enter the 2013 season with a veteran
place kicker in Jon Fennick, who joined
the team midway through the 2012 season.
Fennick made 2 of 3 field goals last year. His
season-long field goal was a 30-yarder in a
16-10 victory over Westminster. ... Juniata made
three key field goals against Thiel last year, two
by Scott Andrews, including the game-winner
from 28-yards out. However, neither of the
Eagles’ field goal kickers that played against
the Tomcats last season appear on this year’s
roster.
Replacing a Master
Thiel’s defense will need to find a way to generate
some of the production lost after the
program’s all-time career leader in sacks and
tackles for loss, Tim Taylor, graduated in the
spring. Picking up the slack on the defensive line
will be McClelland, Bryce Whittingham, Reily
Shane and Tyree Abrams. McClelland was
second on the team last year with six sacks. He
also recorded 25 tackles, seven of which were
for a loss of yards. Shane really came on at the
end of his freshman campaign. Over the course
of the year, Shane recorded 17 tackles, 2.5 of
which were for a loss of yards, and three sacks.
Whittingham notched 12 tackles a season ago,
3.5 of which were for a loss of yards. He also
contributed a half-sack.
Captains
Thiel captains for the 2013 season were named
this week. Captains are Frizzi, Smith and
Whittingham.

Undermining Udinski
It behooves the Tomcats to disrupt returning
Eagles quarterback Ward Udinski, who completed
16 of 28 passes against the Tomcats
last season for 212 yards. He also ran for 17
yards on nine carries in the opener last season.
Udinski went on to throw for 2,429 yards in
2012 with eight TDs and 13 INTs. He also led
the team on the ground with 458 yards on 144
carries.
Managing McCaulley
Returning Juniata running back Zach McCaulley
ran for 120 yards on 26 carries against Thiel last
year. Containing McCaulley and Udinski will be
critical for the Tomcat defense Saturday.

Udinski’s Receivers
One area where the Eagles do not have much
veteran experience is at wide reciever. The
Eagles, who list four receiver positions on their
2-deep depth chart, lost their top four wide
receivers from a season ago. Junior Colton
Myers is the top returning receiver from last
season for the Eagles. He made 15 catches for
184 yards. Kyle Shuck, another junior, made
six grabs for 71 yards and scored one TD in
2012, while fellow junior Isaiah Slutter made two
catches for 29 yards.
Thiel Pass Defense v. Juniata
Pass Offense
One interesting battle to look for Saturday is
between Thiel’s pass defense and Juniata’s
pass offense. Thiel’s front seven will want to not
only pressure Udinski, but also not allow him to
escape the pocket. Thiel’s secondary returns
with five veterans, including Hainesworth, Rob
Edwards, Brandon Wolfe, Julian McLean and
Tim Canady.
Turnovers
The Tomcats lost the turnover battle to the
Eagles last year, 3-0. Ball security could be key
again in this year’s season-opening tilt.

About the Presidents’
Athletic Conference
Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic
Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate
athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence.
Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany
College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove
City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College,
Thomas More College, Washington and Jefferson
College, Waynesburg University and Westminster
College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this
day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics
at the center of each member’s philosophy, the
PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is
a part of college life, but not an entity in itself.
The PAC expanded to seven members in 2005 with
the addition of Thomas More, formerly an NCAA
Division III independent. Saint Vincent College, a former
NAIA member, joined the conference as its began
provisional membership status in NCAA Division III
in 2006-07. Another former NAIA member, Geneva
College, became the conference’s ninth member and
began league play as it started NCAA Division III
provisional membership in 2007-08. Chatham College
(now University) became the league’s 10th member,
also in 2007-08. In 2012, the PAC voted to add
Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve
University as affiliate members in football beginning in
2014.
The PAC annually crowns champions and awards All-
Conference status in 19 league sports. Head coaches
select All-PAC squads for all team sports, while in individual
sports, such as cross country, All-PAC accolades
are based upon performances at the conference championships.
PAC championship teams receive automatic
qualification (AQ) status for most NCAA Division III
national championship events.
The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s All-
Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best
across the board in PAC competition.
True to its mission, the PAC has produced numerous
Academic All-Americans and NCAA Postgraduate
Scholarship winners. Last year, the league named 853
student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll,
which recognizes student-athletes who attain a GPA
of 3.6 or above.
