Game Preview
The Thiel football team will look for the upset as defending
PAC champion and number eight in the country Thomas
More comes into Greenville to take on the Tomcats.
Coach Reiser and Thiel are looking to rebound from a 36-14
loss at the hands of Saint Vincent College, and will take on a
Thomas More squad that narrowly escaped Washington, Pa.
with a 35-32 victory over the Presidents of W & J last week.
For Thiel, sophomore quarterback Andrew Smith started
his first game of the season last week and responded by
throwing the most yards in a game by a Tomcat quarterback
this season as he threw for 186 and a score against the
Saint Vincent defense. Smith’s main target on the day was
sophomore wide receiver Bill Frizzi who caught five balls for
55 yards. Zane Garza, who caught three balls for 68 yards,
scored the lone receiving touchdown on the day. Freshman
running back Taylor Fink led the ground attack in his first
collegiate game as he ran for 70 yards and a score.
The Thiel offense will be going up against a Saint defense
that allowed 524 yards of total offense against Washington
& Jefferson last week including 326 yards through the air.
Thomas More currently ranks seventh in passing yards
allowed per game as they are giving up just over 225 ypg
through the air.
On the reverse side of the ball, the Thomas More offense
comes in as the top scoring offense in the conference posting
just over 40 points per contest. The Saints currently rank
third in the conference in passing yards per game (236.7) and
fourth in rushing yards (164.0). Quarterback Robert Kues
has completed 65% of his passes so far this season with six
touchdowns and no interceptions.
The Tomcats will look to stop the pass and take advantage
of the Thomas More secondary to pull the upset and get
their first win of the season.

Thiel In Week Four
The Saint Vincent Bearcats jumped out to a 30-0 halftime
lead and cruised to a 36-14 Presidents’ Athletic
Conference (PAC) victory against the Tomats
Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
Saint Vincent (2-1, 1-0) outgained Thiel (0-4, 0-2)
457-278 in total yards and finished with a 173-95
edge in rushing yards. The Bearcats also finished with
an 18-13 advantage in first downs and forced a pair
of Tomcat turnovers.
Andrew Smith (Williamsfield, Ohio/Pymatuning
Valley) finished 15-of-26 for 183 yards, a touchdown,
and an interception. Taylor Fink (Kittanning, Pa./
Kittanning) ran for 70 yards and a score on 21 carries
while De’Von Drish (Bratenahl, Ohio/Ginn Academy)
added 34 yards on 15 attempts. Bill Frizzi (Pittsburgh,
Pa./North Catholic) caught five passes for 55 yards
while Zane Garza (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut) led
all Thiel receivers with three catches for 68 yards
and a touchdown.
Ethan Ludwig (East Liverpool, Ohio/East Liverpool)
led the Tomcats defensively with 10 total stops.
Ryan Dawes (Transfer, Pa./Reynolds) finished with
nine tackles while Robert Edwards and Jason Miller
(Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton) each added five.
After forcing Thiel to punt on their opening first
quarter drive, Saint Vincent quickly strung together
an 11-play, 71-yard drive that was capped by a
Morgan Porter 29-yard field goal with 5:45 to go in
the first.
Following a post-play personal foul on a Tomcat punt
the Bearcats took over on the Thiel 47 and needed
just four plays for Ehredt to give the visitors a 10-0
lead with 2:40 remaining in the opening period as he
was able to score from 28 yards out.
On their second drive of the second quarter
Smetanka hooked up with Ehredt for a 14-yard scoring
pass with just under nine minutes to play in first
half to go up 17-0, and Christian Sutton’s 11-yard
score on a reverse with 3:42 remaining in the half
gave the Bearcats a 23-0 advantage. Following a
Tomcat three-and-out on the ensuing possession
Saint Vincent generated a nine-play, 66-yard scoring
drive that culminated with a Smetanka-to-Sutton
26-yard scoring pass with no time remaining as the
Bearcats went into intermission leading 30-0. Saint
Vincent managed to outgain Thiel 216-1 in the second
quarter.
Saint Vincent wasted little time extending their
lead in the third quarter as Smetanka connected
with Cody Strelick for a three-yard score just 1:48
into the period, pushing the Bearcats out to a 36-0
lead. The scoring drive was keyed by Zach Milalko’s
71-yard return on the second half opening kickoff.
Thiel’s Fink notched his first collegiate touchdown on
the Tomcats’ ensuing drive, scoring from five yards
out to cap a 12-play, 65-yard drive.
The Bearcats, electing to punt from the Tomcat
28-yard line on a fourth-and 10 play with 3:47 to
go in the third, were able to down the ball at the
Tomcat one-yard line, which lead to one of the most
efficient Thiel drives of the season.
It appeared a Smith pass was intercepted on the
opening play of the drive at the Thiel 40-yard line, but
an illegal procedure penalty on the Bearcats allowed
Smith and Tomcats to return to the huddle and
register an 11-play, 99-yard scoring drive that ended
with Smith connecting with Zane Garza (Conneaut,
Ohio/Conneaut) for a 12-yard touchdown. The drive
stretched into the fourth quarter and took 6:20.
Limiting Penalties
So far this season, the Tomcats have done a good job
of limiting their mistakes when it comes to penalty
yardage. In four games this season, Thiel has been
flagged just 19 times averaging 45 yards in penalties
which is second in the conference. On the other side,
Thomas More has had some issues with penalties as
they have been flagged for 26 infractions in just three
games (76 ypg) which ranks eighth in the PAC.
Air Attack
In his first game as a starter this season, sophomore
quarterback Andrew Smith led the Tomcats to their
most proficient passing attack of the season as he
completed 15-of-26 and threw for a season high 183
yards on the day including a 53-yard connection and
a touchdown pass to Zane Garza. Smith also conducted
an 11-play, 99-yard drive against Saint Vincent
where he connected on all four of his passes on the
drive. This week, the Tomcat passing attack will go
against a Saints’ defense that currently ranks seventh
in the conference in passing defense, giving up 225
yards per game through the air, including 326 yards
in their previous contest to Washington & Jefferson.
The Tomcats will look to take advantage of the Saint
secondary in Saturday’s matchup.
Captains
Team captains were named before the start of the
week one game against Marietta. Senior OL David
Mossa, senior linebacker Ryan Dawes, junior defensive
end Tim Taylor, and sophomore quarterback
Jared Soell will serve as the captains for the 2011
season.

Touchdowns for Heart
First National Bank is partnering with Thiel Football
this fall to raise money for the American Heart
Association. FNB will place banners around Alumni
Stadium promoting the “Touchdowns for Heart”
theme.
For every touchdown the Thiel football
team scores at its home games, FNB will donate
$100 to the American Heart Association. So far
this season FNB has donated $400 to the
American Heart Association.
Why Tomcats
Through 1923 Thiel athletic teams were known as
the “Huskies.” But in 1924, greatly impressed by the
spirit of the Thiel football team, Carnegie Tech (now
Carnegie Mellon) head coach Wally Steffen observed
that “they played like wild, wild cats”.
This prompted Melvin A. Blair of the Greenville
Record-Argus to report “Thiel played like Tom’s
cats,” in reference to head coach Dr. Thomas
Holleran, a Greenville dentist and former all-American
at the University of Pittsburgh. Thereafter,
the Thiel “Huskies” became known as the Thiel
“Tomcats”, a tribute to Dr. Holleran.
Around the PAC
Week three of Presidents’ Athletic Conference play
pits four teams without a conference loss so far
this season against four teams who are looking to
get back in the conference title hunt. Waynesburg
University, coming off a close call against Grove
City (32-26) will take on the Bison of Bethany
College who earned their first conference victory
of the season, defeating Geneva 48-27. The Golden
Tornadoes, still looking for their first victory of the
season, travel to Saint Vincent, who has won two
straight contests for the first time since the teams’
return in 2006 after beating Thiel 36-14 last week.
W & J, coming off a tough 35-32 defeat at the hands
of Thomas More, will take on Westminster, who
are 1-0 in the conference after defeating Grove City
two weeks ago and then being off last week. The
Wolverines, who fell to Waynesburg last week, have
their bye week in week five.

About the Presidents’
Athletic Conference
Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic
Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate
athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence.
Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany
College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove
City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College,
Thomas More College, Washington and Jefferson
College, Waynesburg University and Westminster
College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this
day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics
at the center of each member’s philosophy, the
PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is
a part of college life, but not an entity in itself.
The PAC expanded to seven members in 2005 with the
addition of Thomas More, formerly an NCAA Division
III independent. Saint Vincent College, a former NAIA
member, joined the conference as its began provisional
membership status in NCAA Division III in 2006-07.
Another former NAIA member, Geneva College,
became the conference’s ninth member and began
league play as it started NCAA Division III provisional
membership in 2007-08. Chatham College became the
league’s 10th member, also in 2007-08.
The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports.
In 2008-09, the conference had 41 teams represent
the conference in postseason play, including 23
in NCAA Championship events. PAC championship
teams receive automatic qualification (AQ) status for
most NCAA Division III national championship events.
All-conference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head
coaches select all-league squads for all team sports,
while in individual sports such as cross country and
tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances
at the conference championships.
The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s All-
Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best
across the board in PAC competition.
True to its mission, the PAC has produced numerous
Academic All-Americans and NCAA Postgraduate
Scholarship winners. Last year, the league named 602
student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll,
which recognizes all participating athletes who attain a
term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.
