PER CAPITA PERSONAL INCOME<br />

Table 1J, Per Capita Personal<br />

Income (PCPI), compares the per<br />

capita personal income (adjusted to<br />

$1992) for the Hidalgo County (McAllen<br />

MSA), Cameron County (Brownsville<br />

MSA) the State <strong>of</strong> Texas, and the<br />

United States between 1970 and 2000.<br />

As illustrated by the table, the State <strong>of</strong><br />

Texas’s PCPI has mirrored, but slightly<br />

trailed that <strong>of</strong> the United States. The<br />

State <strong>of</strong> Texas’ PCPI ranked 31st in the<br />

country at 91 percent <strong>of</strong> the national<br />

average ($21,500) in 1995. The average<br />

annual growth rate <strong>of</strong> Texas’ adjusted<br />

CPI over the thirty year period was<br />

1.94 percent, while the nation’s<br />

adjusted PCPI averaged 1.86 percent<br />

annual growth.<br />

The percent increase in growth <strong>of</strong> PCPI<br />

for Hidalgo County (McAllen MSA) was<br />

higher than the other three comparative<br />

PCPIs. The personal per capita income<br />

in 1970 was an average <strong>of</strong> $6,574<br />

compared to the 2000 average income <strong>of</strong><br />

$11,387 almost double the amount. This<br />

reflects what was occurring state and<br />

nation wide at a slightly faster rate <strong>of</strong><br />

growth.<br />
