Macy Foundation Funds Symposium<br />
on Interpr<strong>of</strong>essional Education and Practice<br />
on their findings and a plan for<br />
bringing them into education and<br />
practice. A publication date has<br />
not yet been set.<br />
With the Macy Foundation’s<br />
support as a springboard,<br />
CDM hopes to sponsor activities<br />
that will move beyond a stereotypical<br />
division <strong>of</strong> the health<br />
care pr<strong>of</strong>essions and the culture<br />
<strong>of</strong> hierarchy.<br />
On June 14 and 15, the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Dental</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> hosted Integrating<br />
Oral and Overall Health Care:<br />
On the Road to Interpr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
Education and Practice, a symposium<br />
funded by the Josiah Macy<br />
Jr. Foundation. Dean Ira Lamster,<br />
Division <strong>of</strong> Periodontics Pr<strong>of</strong>essor,<br />
Evanthia Lalla, and New York<br />
Academy <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> President<br />
Jo Ivey Boufford, MD, welcomed<br />
approximately 40 invited guests<br />
and speakers for the two-day<br />
session at the <strong>Columbia</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
Faculty House. Executive Director<br />
<strong>of</strong> the American <strong>Dental</strong> Education<br />
Association (ADEA) and President<br />
<strong>of</strong> the ADEAGies Foundation<br />
Richard Valachovic, DMD, MPH,<br />
gave the keynote address:<br />
“Building a foundation for interpr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
education and practice.”<br />
Dr. Valachovic has led ADEA’s<br />
work in integrating dentistry with<br />
interpr<strong>of</strong>essional education and<br />
practice, and represents ADEA<br />
on IPEC, the Interpr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
Education Collaborative.<br />
Mounting Evidence <strong>of</strong> Oral and<br />
Overall Health Link.<br />
Symposium participants from education<br />
and research, pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
associations, government agencies,<br />
and the insurance industry<br />
heard discussions on the role <strong>of</strong><br />
oral health care pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in<br />
managing patients with complex<br />
chronic conditions, including HIV,<br />
pre-diabetes and diabetes, as well<br />
as existing or potential problems<br />
arising from tobacco use. Other<br />
topics covered the prevention<br />
and recognition <strong>of</strong> oral disease in<br />
non-dental care settings, including<br />
the application <strong>of</strong> topical fluoride<br />
for children, and treatment <strong>of</strong><br />
adults with dry mouth.<br />

On the second day <strong>of</strong> the<br />
symposium, small groups met<br />
to consider steps for introducing<br />
and promoting the symposium’s<br />
overall objective <strong>of</strong> increasing<br />
interpr<strong>of</strong>essional practice. An advisory<br />
board is preparing a report<br />
