invited at parents‟ evenings. The PSHE co-ordinator holds regular review meetings with staff from the
Sexual Health Education Unit and the Healthy Schools team, in order to review the evidence and plan the
next year‟s programme. Any staff development needs will also be identified.
Withdrawal of Students from SRE and Complaints Procedure
Any parent wishing to withdraw their child is encouraged to make an appointment with Mrs Smith to discuss
the matter. Students cannot be withdrawn from any part of SRE which falls within the statutory National
Curriculum Science orders.
Any complaints about the content or delivery of SRE should be addressed to Mrs Smith.
Formal complaints should be forwarded to the Headteacher for consideration. Pastoral matters are referred
to Heads of Year. Staff named in complaints will be seen, informed of the nature of the complaint and will
discuss the best way ahead. All complaints will be acknowledged and, as far as possible, solutions offered or
suggestions made to all parties involved. The Headteacher will discuss complaints with the Governors.
Equal Opportunities
This policy is closely linked with the Equal Opportunities policy, the Bullying policy and the County
Guidelines of Child Protection.
All pupils are entitled to receive SRE regardless of ability, gender, race, religious belief or grouping. Through
SRE we seek to develop a positive view of female and male sexuality. It is our intention that all children have
the opportunity to experience a programme of SRE at a level which is appropriate for their age and physical
development, with differentiated provision if required.
Objective discussion about the diversity of personal, social and sexual preference in relationships will take
place in SRE and prejudiced views will be challenged in order to encourage tolerance. Any bullying around
sexual behaviour or perceived sexual orientation arising from this prejudice will be dealt with as a serious
matter.
Safeguarding/Confidentiality
Effective SRE, which brings an understanding of what is and is not acceptable in a relationship, may lead to
disclosure of a child protection issue. Under common law, young people are entitled to the same duty of
confidence as adults. Personal information about them should not be shared without their permission
except for the purposes of child protection.
Students should be encouraged to speak in general terms and follow the classroom ground rules. If a
student discloses information, in class or directly to a teacher, which is seen to place the child at risk, the
teacher must report to the Child Protection Officer who will decide what action should be taken. At no
time should the teacher go direct to parents. The student should be told this. Teachers should not promise
absolute confidentiality to students. Students are deemed to be at risk, if they are:
Involved in situations where they can endanger themselves or others

Involved in situations where they are being exploited or are exploiting others.
Victims of abuse, physical/sexual or emotional; this would require referral to the Child Protection
Officer.
If a teacher learns from a pupil under 16 years old that they are having, or contemplating having sexual
intercourse, they should take steps to ensure that:
Wherever possible, the young person is persuaded to talk to their parent or carer.
The young person understands the need for advice on sexual health and is given precise information
about where he/she can access confidential contraception and advice services.
Any child protection issues are addressed.
The School Governors and Leadership Group will support the staff member in exercising his/her
professional judgement about what is in the young person‟s best interest.
