Afam site is located 25 km northeast of Port Harcourt in Rivers State, Nigeria.
Afam VI is a 650MW Combined Cycle Power Plant consisting of 3 x gas fired Alstom
13E2 gas turbine generator units with heat recovery steam generators by Doosan
(Korea) and 1 x Alstom steam turbine. The plant is due to complete in 2010 and will be
commission in 4 steps with the first gas turbine operational in November 2008. The EPC
contractor is Daewoo Engineering and Construction.
Evonik expatriate managers worked closely with the SPDC Project team, providing
administrative, documentation and engineering support as well as training and asset
local staff. Evonik has provided the O&M crew during the commissioning under
responsibility of the EPC contracter Daewoo and ronders the 0&M services to the plant.
The gas turbin heavy maintenance is provided by OEM based on a Long-term Service
Agreement. All other supplies, routine GT maintenance and heavy balance of plant
maintenance are within Evonik scope. This project is the largest power plant with
outsourcing of O&M service and a good example to show under which scheme Nigerian
engineers and technicans in Nigeria can develop their capacities and show excellent
O&M performance.
Afam VI is one of the first power plants in Nigeria to incorporate heat recovery
technology (combined cycle power plant) and as such is seen as a flagship project.
Evonik is well placed to take the plant forward to full commercial operation and will be a
powerful contestant in the accelerated expansion of Nigeria‘s electricity infrastructure.
