Evonik Energy Services
Our company offers comprehensive services and forward-looking solutions for all
forms of power generation. As reliable partners we develop, plan and operate energy
installations worldwide.
In addition to engineering services
for the new construction and modernization
of fossil-fueled power
plants, we offer skills and expertise
in the field of „renewable energies“.
Through our Nuclear Technologies
engineering unit we are actively involved
in the development of trailblazing
technologies and concepts
for the operation and disposal of
nuclear facilities.
More over, we develop and provide
IT solutions for cost and process
optimization. The construction of
Europe‘s most modern hard-coalfired
power plant in Duisburg-Walsum
is being realized on the basis
of the „Clean Competitive Electricity
from Coal“ (CCEC) concept
developed by us.
What started out with Evonik
Steag’s own power plants has become
our trademark: „The planning
engineer with operating experience.“
Our power plant technology „Made
in Germany“ is in demand the world
over:
In India and Brazil we both plan and
operate power plants. We modernize
and optimize existing assets;
our software is integrated in many
new power plants. In the USA we
are a prime name in air pollution
control; we operate the world‘s
most modern regeneration facility
for power plant catalysts there.
Our biggest capital is our employees.
We employ around 1,000 people
worldwide – engineers, scientists
and technicians in their majority.
They continuously exchange knowledge,
utilize the latest findings and
experience, and design made-tomeasure
solutions for our customers.

Efficiency is our key
to success
We plan, build and operate power
plants worldwide.
We are the partner for renewable
energies.
We ensure safe and environmentally
compatible dismantling of nuclear
facilities.
We improve power plant processes
with the aim of greatest possible
efficiency.
Energy Technologies
Nuclear Technologies
Engineering, supervising of construction,
and commissioning of energy
installations
Energy Technologies offers engineering
solutions in the power plant sector –
from consulting through structural engineering
to the performance of all builder/owner
functions in the course of
project implementation.
The basis for this are plant concepts for
fossil fuels, for waste recycling and disposal,
environmental technologies and
water treatment technology as well as
civil engineering solutions. New-build
or modification of electrical and I&C
systems and components or the planning
and realization of industrial and power
plant structures complement the range
of services.
Engineering, building, decommissioning
and dismantling of nuclear facilities
The Nuclear Technologies unit provides
services relating to the engineering and
building of nuclear installations, including,
for example, conceptual design, basic engineering
and detail engineering, delivery
and field erection, as well as commissioning.
Another main area of work is the decommissioning
and dismantling of nuclear facilities.
Here we develop specific concepts
and processes, from the planning stage to
practical implementation, making allowance
for all aspects of safety and economic
efficiency. We perform nuclear and
physical calculations with recognized, tried
and tested software tools, some of which
we have developed ourselves.

Plant Services
System Technologies
Research and Development
Power plant O&M, control and acceptance
measurements, personnel services,
training
The Plant Services unit takes charge of the
operation and maintenance of thermal power
plants around the world. Continuously
optimized operations management concepts
ensure high availability rates and low cost.
The necessary operating and maintenance
personnel are trained both locally and in our
own training facilities for coal and gas-fired
power plants, and soon also for solar thermal
power plants. The unit provides specialist-personnel
leasing and procurement services.
The services in this area are supplemented
by the unit’s own accredited testing laboratory
and inspection body.
Energy management systems, operation
management systems, communication
technology, site IT
The System Technologies unit develops
intelligent software designed to optimize
the costs and technical processes involved
in plant operation.
Operation management systems support
optimized operating workflows in power
plants. Specially developed sensors and
programs are used for early diagnosis of
damage; critical components are centrally
monitored, and deviations from normal
operation are reported to the power plant
staff. Energy management systems serve
to monitor, control and optimize the plant.
In addition, the unit offers optimized solutions
for communication, network, security
and fire alarm systems.
With our R&D activities we pursue
the objective of ensuring reliable,
economical and environmentally
compatible energy supply. In this
connection, together with other partners
as well as universities and major
research centers we are very active in
the R&D program of the German Federal
Ministry of Economics and
Technology for CO 2
reduction technology
(COORETEC).
Evonik‘s aim there is especially to advance
efficiency-enhancing measures
in order to make an effective contribution
to CO 2
reduction.
Apart from conventional power plant
technology, Evonik Steag is also involved
in the fields of thermal biomass
and biogas utilization, geothermics
and compressed-air energy
storage.
Other R&D activities focus on the
optimization of power plant operation
with regard to the efficiency of
everyday operation and the dynamics
and anticipative identification of disturbances.

6
Save resources –
protect the
environment
Growing power requirements, the development of the climate, rising
prices for fossil sources of energy, and not least of all the striving for a
greater independence and stability of energy supply govern our actions.
Electricity from the sun
Evonik Energy Services currently is focusing
on solar thermal plants, whose energy efficiency
is higher compared with photovoltaics.
For this purpose we can make use of
our experience in the production of electricity
from fossil fuels. With the help of solar
radiation, heat is generated which is fed into
a conventional water-steam cycle.
Solar thermal power plants can be built only
at suitable sites in the earth‘s sun belt if they
are to make economic sense.
Evonik Energy Services has been able to
demonstrate its skill in this field in several
solar thermal power plant projects worldwide.
The main emphasis of our services is sitespecific
studies for power plant and storage
concepts, technical planning, tendering,
construction supervision, operation and
maintenance of solar power plants, and the
optimizing of operation with simulation
software (EbsSolar) developed by us.
Fresh breeze
Our objective in the wind energy segment
is the development of a portfolio
of wind power projects in Europe and
Turkey. Evonik Energy Services has been
active in the Turkish wind power market
with partners since 2008 and will participate
in wind farm projects in Europe.
Our expertise covers technical and commercial
project development including
micrositing and basic layout, grid connection,
financing models and feasibility studies,
project financing (equity and external
financing), project planning,
construction and commissioning as well as
operation and maintenance (including innovative
control systems).

7
Based in the Ruhr Valley, but at home throughout
the world
Whether it‘s a transshipper for Turkey, a long-term storage facility for decommissioned nuclear submarines in
Russia, or a power plant at an altitude of 2,600 meters in Colombia – no two projects are alike. The planning,
construction and operation of energy installations have many dimensions: technical, economic and ecological,
political and social.
Each of these dimensions must be individually
weighted and taken into account in
each project depending on where in the
world the project is being implemented
and what the underlying conditions are.
We offer our portfolio across the globe.
In the key countries India, USA and Brazil
we are represented by our subsidiaries.
With the close cooperation and support of
German engineers we offer „power plant
technology made in Germany“ there.
India
Evonik Energy Services (India) Pvt. Ltd.
was set up in 2001. The approximately
450 employees of the company, which is
based in New Delhi, provide a wide range
of services for power plant operators.
Along with conventional engineering services
for modernizing and building new
power plants, they include taking full
charge of the operation and maintenance
of power plants of third parties. Another
focus of work is the development and implementation
of process optimization software
which helps boost efficiency based
on the experience gained in Evonik’s own
power plants.
Under the vigorously pursued program of
modernization – and thus improvement of
the efficiency – of existing coal-fired power
plants in India, Evonik Energy Services India
can claim market leadership for itself
as R&M (Renovation & Modernization)
consultant through its involvement in
many current projects.
USA
Since 1992 our subsidiary Evonik Energy
Services LLC has been active in the USA
and serves the strongly growing market
of American power plants which operate
on fossil fuels and have to comply with increasingly
more stringent statutory environmental
requirements.
In the North American energy supply
market our subsidiary currently is very
successful with services from the portfolio
of Energy Technologies and Plant Services.
The portfolio includes environmental technology
services and engineering and consulting
services for air pollution control
systems.
Evonik Energy Services LLC is headquartered
in North Carolina. In 2007 its range
of power plant services was successfully
enlarged, and after only nine months‘
work the world‘s most modern regeneration
facility for power plant catalysts
could be put into service.
Brazil
Evonik Energy Services do Brasil Ltd. was
established in 2002. Together with a local
partner it operates the 170 MW Canoas
gas turbine power station of Petrobras,
near Porto Alegre, Brazil. It is one of the
most up-to-date, most efficient, most environment-friendly
power plants.
On behalf of ThyssenKrupp we are handling
the planning, construction supervision
and operation and maintenance of the
power plant complex for the new steel
mill in Santa Cruz, Rio de Janeiro. This
ultramodern 490 MW combined cycle
power plant is operated exclusively with
blast furnace gas and coking plant steam
and is the biggest of three industrial power
plants of this type in existence in the
world.
