ECR AP Sustainability - Walmart Best Practices
Walmart is a pioneer in the area of responsible sourcing with a strong focus on the Asian markets from where it sources 80% of its
merchandise.
Walmart’s Supplier Development Program is a first of its kind initiative to
encourage suppliers to adopt best practices. The program goes beyond simple
audits by teaching suppliers hands on methods to bring their operations to a
world-class level. Benefits include a decrease in workplace injuries, lower
employee turnover rate, enhanced energy efficiency, improved recruitment
practices and better internal communications practices.
54 suppliers have already graduated from the program and 127 suppliers are
currently enrolled. .
Walmart puts a great deal of emphasis on encouraging its suppliers to adhere
to global best practices in areas ranging from sustainability to safety. The best
case practice in this area is Walmart China’s Energy Efficiency Program
that involved more than 300 factories in China.
By January 2011, 143 factories have achieved 20% energy efficiency improvement with totally saved energy consumption by 514
million KWh, equivalent to reducing CO2 411,000 tons.
Walmart Supplier Diversity program was launched in 1994 to help bring minority and women-owned businesses into our vast network
of suppliers with an initial spend of US$2 million. Today, our procurement from diverse suppliers’ accounts for more than
US$10.5 billion in direct and second-tier spend.
Walmart and Unilever HUL recycling initiative in India
In 2011, Bharti Walmart and Unilever
India launched “HUL”, a first-ofits
kind recycling initiative in India
promoting plastic waste recycling
and educating consumers on responsible
consumption. The program ran
for three months across 30 stores.
Throughout the campaign period,
customers were encouraged to bring
empty plastic bottles and pouches in
exchange for store coupons
Walmart and SC Johnson Sustainability partnership
Walmart U.S. publically announced the desire to
phase-out of products containing the following three
chemicals: permethrin, propoxur, dichlorvos.
Walmart’s announcement focused on having suppliers
deliver a plan to achieve this goal.
SCJ put together a plan based on product development
and regulatory timelines to move from Permethrin
to other active ingredients with the imperative
of maintaining product performance.

(VSM) project
Bangladesh – Walmart WHEEL program for garment workers
In Bangladesh, more than 80 percent of garment workers are women,
and nearly all of them live in poverty. These women often lack a formal
education and the skills necessary to improve their quality of life.
With our assistance, the WHEEL program has set up 100 learning centers
where women can gain workplace skills and receive literacy training.
The initiative will benefit 2,500 workers and their families, positively
impacting an estimated 12,500 to 15,000 people in their communities.
VSM project aimed to eliminate the waste where it
exists along the value stream process in between of
P&G and Walmart. It was done by process optimization,
technology application and operation innovation.
As a result Lead time (time involved from receiving
time to shipping time) improved by 54% and receiving
time improved by 49% in 2011.
