The traveling column machines are ideally suited for the machining of long, bulky
workpieces in one clamping. Large machine tables allow multiple clamping or twintable
machining. While the traveling column is machining one or more workpieces in
the first working area, raw parts can be set up in the second working area during processing
time.
The possibilities of the HV machines for the machining of 5 sides or 3D of any kind of
work parts are almost unlimited. The long X-axis and a swivel head tilting 105° continuously
to both sides, with SK or HSK tapers, in combination with a variety of CNC
rotary tables make these machines infinitely flexible.
Automation Standard and custom-made solutions
Solutions
Machines and automation
For each machine series matec offers the adequate automation. Usually the customer orders the automation together with the machine, especially when large quantities of
parts and high productivity are major aspects. In most cases commercially available systems are used, which are adapted to the parameters of the machine. More complex
automation is being constructed and built by matec. In order to find the right automation a look at the process chain is helpful:
Where does the raw part come from and where does the machined part go?
< Y = Y
horizontal
tilting table with 2 clamping
areas in a row
The basic form of an automation is an NC gripper in the tool magazine. It can perform the loading and unloading process, the axes of the machine are in that case used for
handling the parts. In other cases a pallet changer is the best solution. The highly-productive swivel table machines usually have a very short operating time in the machining
of parts. Since loading procedure takes place every 3-4 minutes, automation by pallet changer is not the best choice. A gantry loader, which picks the parts from a rolling
belt and places them into the machine, or a robot are the more flexible alternatives.
Combination of pallet und tool handling with handling robot exemplified at matec-30 HVK Isometric drawing
> Y
Standard
long-bed table
The traveling column series is a highly flexible machine concept with long traverse paths. It is designed for the machining of heavy work parts in small to medium batches. The
automation depends on the machining task: A gantry loader is more expensive than a robot, but it can move longer and heavier parts. The gantry loader (3 or 4 axis) is moving
linear, so longer paths are possible. The gantry loader can load several machines in a row, a difficult task for a handling robot. The robot on the other hand is much more flexible
due to its joints (practically 6 and more axes).
Using a pallet changer for automation makes sense in every series, when maching of voluminous and heavy parts or complete machining with long operating time play a decisive
role.
Ortrander Eisenhütte GmbH
Visions from a casting
An international casting center is coming into being in Ortrand,
a small eastern German town in the district of Lausitz. Under the
maxim “Adding value is the future”, it is collaborating with technological
associates such as matec to upgrade castings for individual
customers and to increase earnings.
Creating prospects in the Lausitz
Cast iron - for most of us, this means nothing more than cold, rough metal, the result
of a process of liquifying, placing in a mold and solidifying. In Ortrand and the iron
works based there, however, the term casting mens much more - a deeply felt passion
which creates prospects.
They hace been casting metal in Ortrand in the district of Lausitz, which in fact is in
the heart of a traditional German coalmining region, for 120 years. That casting is
generally looked on as part of the “Old Economy” does not in any way bother
Bernd H. Williams-Boock, who has been the CEO of Ortrander Eisenhütte for four
years. On the contrary “ We should explain how we make a living here in Germany.
In 2007, we achieved a growth in the economy of 2.6 percent, supported by
exports. And what do we send abroad? In many cases, a contraption with a steel or
alloy body, either a car or a machine. And on the inside, drive systems, which move
things, hydraulics, and so on. And all these are castings. Gear wheels, engine housings,
hydraulic blocks. So what do we need in Germany to safeguard our living
standard? Steel and castings!”
At the Ortrander ironworks under the management of the eloquent salesman from
Hamburg, this way of looking at things has given rise to a vision whose ignition spark
has not only affected the 200 employees, but has also opened up gleaming longterm
prospects for the entire region: The intention is to transform a local foundry with
European flair into an international casting center. The rapid implement of the project
costing EUR 32 million was made possible by the favorable environment for middle
class investors in the Lausitz district, “all of whom, from the State government to the
community in general played an active role, as the Ortrander boss Willimas-Boock
acknowledges.
More castings, more added value, more work, more profit
Today the name Ortrander stands for high-tech casting processes concentrating on
large, thin-walled components made of flake, modular and compacted graphite in
short to medium runs. And casts are increasingly being sold in combination with additional
services, for example either machined to a finish and ready to install or assembled
to form a finished product. Accordingly the message of the ironworks’ boss is
calling for more added value “If, as full service suppliers, we want to offer added
value to our customers, we must have an understanding of the end-product or subassebly,
including the knowledge how to produce the product from A to Z. “
Industrial
Our customers
5-axis machining par excellence
In order to be able to exist in the global market with this strategy, Ortrander is appointing
leading technologist exclusively in developing its production capabilities. For
mechanical processing on the latest machine tools, the choice of manufacturers fell on
matec. The brief called for drilling, thread-cutting and milling in every plane. According
to a sixth-month benchmark, matec was ahead of four other suppliers on all the relevant
points, that is: better price/performance ratio, more rugged and versatile engineering,
and higher machining quality. Four of the five matec-30 HV 5-axis swiveling centers
ordered from Köngen are now in service, predominantly making large components
for heating systems.
In matec, Williams-Boock scored a bullseye: “For some years we have been making
parts for high-quality domestic wood burning stoves for subsequent assembly. We are
virtually a form of furniture makers, using cast iron as our material. The products themselves
are getting more complex and call for exceptionally precise machining, so that
the tectile cast surfaces are not only attractive to look at but also achieve a high
Horizontal, vertical and in between: the swivel head of the matec machining centers
in combination with the integrated torque rotary table ensures dynamic tool
positioning when processing large components

sectors + applications
in different industrial sectors and all over the world
In five axes on five sides: fourr 4-axis traveling column machining centers matec-30 HV perform highly productive machining tasks on large thinwalled
castings. The well-designed machines have proven to be exceptionally adaptable and reliable.
degree of efficiency as stoves. After over a year in service, the machines have
done everything we were promised by matec and by Mr. Unger.”
Nothing less than high-tech requirements
Exacting demands are made on the traversing column machines with horizontal/vertical
swiveling head in all-round processing. Because many castings
get a coloration after the machining process, this is carred out exclusively dry.
As a result of the dimensions of the stoves, the hinges for the doors are so far
apart, that they must be processed from two sides and, needless to say, be in
perfect alignment. Other characteristics are the precisely milled sealing faces
and the countless fine-pitch M3 threads, up to 40 mm deep, for assembly purposes.
This is where the exceptional dynamics of the axes, the swiveling head
and the torque of the integrated rotary table pay off.
A Köcher tool magazine, integrated into the machine column, also contributes
to high productivity. It not only reliably protects the SK40 interfaces from contamination,
but also ensures rapid tool changes no matter what the X-/Y-position
of the traveling column in the working area is, because only the Z-axis has
to be moved for this. For extra-long tools a pick-up station is incorporated.
Tapping the full potential of machine parameters
One item of particular interest concerns the safe, rapid clamping of large and
highly contoured components, particularly given that the unmachined surfaces
of the castings must not be damaged in any way, which would detract from
their appearance.
A fully booked-up training course at matec dispensed appropriate tips and
tricks as well as more far-reaching information on dealing with the Heidenhain
control system, well-known and highly valued at Ortrander.
For matec boss Erich Unger Ortrander is a presentation with a knock-on effect:
“Even in the customizing stage Ortrander personnel took an exceptional interest
in the overall conception of the machines. What we conveyed in the way
of experience - whether from the standpoint of tool engineering, cutting data,
tool clamping or the double workstation with two separate machining areas -
the information was quickly implemented. This paid off directly in the form of
unusually rapid familiarization with 5-axis machining.”
Sectors General
Generating mutual success: matec boss Erich Unger (left) and Ortrander boss Bernd
Williams-Boock (right) jointly align their companies with the objective of maximizing
customer benefits. To this end both resort to state of the art technology.
Solutions
Automation
The highly-productive swivel table machines usually have
a very short operating time in the machining of parts. Since
loading procedure takes place every 3-4 minutes, automation
by pallet changer is not the best choice. The mounting
of the parts would take too much time. In addition the
necessary device is an extra expense-factor.
Complete machining, long machining time, or the machining
of voluminous and heavy workpieces make a pallet changer
a good solution for swivel table machines.
When chaining machines, gantry loaders or loading robots
are usually chosen. In this case size and weight of the workpieces
are determining factors.
Flexible manufacturing cell for series production
Performing a certain machining task, the CNC gantry loader
grips the rotationally symmetrical parts from a rolling
belt and places them in the position-fixing unit to adjust.
So, the parts are fixed in the machine load area by turns
and swivelled into the machining area by a 180° swivel
table.
During the machining process in both centers the gantry
loader discharges the finished parts from the machines
and deposits them on the rolling belt.
The whole production flow of the flexible manufacturing
cell is controlled by the gantry loader.
