Juniors Selected in CHS
Toongabbie Sports Club junior bowlers Nick Sawell, Jeremy Suffolk and
Sean McGovern represented Zone 10 Juniors in the Junior Metro Shield
at Warilla last Sunday. The competition is represented by 16 Zones and
Zone 10 finished second despite beating the winners Zone 16. Our three
bowlers played very well and represented our club at a high standard.
On behalf of Toongabbie Sports Club we would like to congratulate our
bowlers and hope they keep up the good work.
Bulldogs Look a Real Contender for the Title
It’s that time of the year again when we all bring out our football
jumpers and head to the Toongabbie Sports Club on a weekend and
cheer our favourite team on. It was a great atmosphere at the
Toongabbie Sports Club on Saturday afternoon when the local
Parramatta Eel’s played a hot favourite in the Warriors. Parramatta
showed that they are ready to put last years performance behind them
and are in for a big 2011. Kiwi Steve Barron was full of yap before the
game as he could only sit and take it on the chin from the large crowd
of Parramatta supporters at Toongabbie Sports Club
The other team to stand out in round 1 was the Canterbury Bulldogs
beating favourites West Tigers. The Bulldogs have recruited well and
have had a good off season. The Bulldogs won the battle of the
forwards and were far superior in their kicking game. The battle of the
hookers has been a talking point for a long time and Michael Ennis took
the points again last night. The Tigers are a quality team and I’m sure
they will bounce back next week against the Warriors.
Last year’s Toongabbie Sports Club footy tipping winner Lorraine Troth
has got away to a slow start on 4 points. Dennis Leahy stands alone in
front on 7 points with 12 punters sitting 1 point behind on 6 points.

Controversy in Major Singles
On Sunday the first and second rounds of the Major Singles were
played in hot conditions. There was only one game played in round
one Dave Letford against Trevor Clay as all other entries had a bye into
the second round. Trevor was always on top but Dave never gave up
and made Trevor work hard for the victory.
The controversy was in round two when Trevor played Peter Dive in a
thrilling game that went to the wire. Trevor was in front 9-2 when Peter
appealed for a new marker much to Dave Letford’s amazement who
was marking the game. Peter was not happy with a call made by the
marker and Peter said Dave was moving around the head. Much to
Dave’s disappointment he was replaced by Kerry Travers. Peter picked
up momentum and kept going all the way with Trevor and finally got
on top to take the match 31/26 in a nail bitter.
In another great game that came down to the wire were Ken Freeland
and Andrew Chapman. Andrew went to an early lead of 8-3 but was
pegged back and Ken went straight over the top to lead 30-20. Ken
only needed 1 shot but failed to do so with Andrew scoring the next 11
shots to win the game 31-30. Results from round 1 & 2 are as follows
Thank you to all markers who gave up their time to mark.
Major singles Round Three
The third and fourth round of the Major Singles will be played on Sunday
20 th March starting at 9am. There will be some great match up’s and
some great bowls played. I’m really looking forward to the battle
between inform bowlers Paul Harper and Mick Hogan. Paul has been
playing good bowls for along time and Mick had a great game of
Pennants last week carrying the big board for grade two to get them
home against Merrylands.
Another great match up will be Andrew Chapman against Steve
Barron. Both are very consistent draw bowlers but can play the big on
shot when required. In saying this there is no doubt that all eyes will be
on what I think will be the match of the year in Peter Dive and P.J.
Stankevicius. Both players are very emotional players and will be fired
up for a big game. I can’t see either player taking a backward step.
The only question that needs to be asked is how many markers will be
used in the game.
Pennant Round Up
Grade 1 Northmead Just Get Over the Line
Grade 1 travelled to Northmead to take on the cashed up team who
have brought up big over the break. Although we went down 6-0 there
was only 5 shots the difference in the big board. Scott Caundle rink was
down by 15 shots and tried all game and only lost their rink by 1. Both
Keith Smith and Adam Troth lost by 2 shots. Both P.J and Keith Smith had
good games.
A. Troth B. Hughes P.J A. Brien Lost 16-18
Grade 2 Toongabbie Beat Last Year’s State Finalists
Grade 2 played last year’s finalist Merrylands. Merrylands had the
majority of the same side but have added some stronger players with
their signings in grade 1. Mick Hogan was a stand out but so was his
whole side winning by 11 shots to win the big board.
M. Hogan K. Travers G. Harper B. Morgan Won 24-13
T. Clay A. Batt J. Suffolk N. Sawell Lost 17-20
J. McDonald J. McGuinness G. Malligan D. Phelps Lost 15-22
Toongabbie 56 Merrylands 55
Grade 3 Merrylands Too Strong at the Finish
Grade 3 travelled to Merrylands and struggled to keep pace with the
powerful club. Ray Stanwell managed a draw but Barry Jenkins went
down by 4 and Graeme Callaghan went down by 6. Cameron
McClure was the stand out player.
B. Jenkins S. Bills K. Freeland J. Bryce Lost 16-20
R. Stanwell C. McClure S. McGovern V. Aruajo Drew 19-19
G. Callaghan B. Troth R. Williamson C. Dive Lost 17-23
Grade 4 Finishes Strong But Run Out of Ends
Grade 4 got off to a terrible start to be behind by 30 shots but clawed
there way back into the game to go down by 8 shots. Jim Mckenzie
was the stand out and his rink won by 4 shots. John Graham was well
down but done well to be beaten by only 5 shots.
J. McKenzie P. Leonarder K. Hollins T. Ryeland Won 27-23
A. Watson H. Arthurs R. Douglass J. Rixon Lost 15-22
Grade 6 Makes a Statement
Grade 6 had a convincing win to make a big statement to all other
clubs in Zone 10. Toongabbie beat Brush Park by 40 shots and look like
they will be in for a good year. The combination of our skips and thirds
are working a treat. Simon Cooper was the player to stand out but all
players performed very well.
M. Boatswain B. Suffolk R. Sawell T. Lord Won 27-14
L. Neich P. Strong M. Cutmore B. Strong Won 22-12
