The College of Charleston is a special blend of
colonial charm and modern education. As you
walk along the brick pathways, winding through
the campus, you
pass buildings dating
back to the 18th
Century. Other
buildings, constructed
since 1970,
house modern classroom
and laboratory
facilities.
The College is located
in the heart of
Charleston, SC, an
historic city and
popular tourist attraction. Charleston’s semitropical
weather makes it a great area for outdoor activities,
and several beach and resort areas are a
short drive from the peninsular campus. Many
campus clubs and organizations offer students a
chance to join others with similar recreational and
educational interests.
When the colonies declared their independence,
the College of Charleston was already six years
old. Founded in 1770 and chartered in 1785, the
College of Charleston is the thirteenth oldest institution
of higher education in the nation. Its
beginning resulted from a desire to give young
people of the South Carolina lowcountry a quality
education.
In 1826, when the College first received financial
aid from the City of Charleston, it became
the first municipal college in the United
States. Charleston county also began providing
financial assistance in 1918 and the College returned
to private status in 1949.
When the College became a state-supported institution
in 1970, it entered a period of rapid
growth which brought it to its current status as
the third largest higher education institution in
South Carolina.
The main campus covers approximately 100
new and renovated buildings, as well as a marine
biology laboratory on James Island, an outdoor
recreation area in Mt. Pleasant and a sailing
center at the City Marina.
The College is accredited by the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools, and is a member
of the Association of American Colleges.
