Krakow, Royal City is a historical capital of the Poland Kingdom. Nowadays, Krakow
(www.krakow.pl/en/) is the main city and capital of Malopolska (www.wrotamalopolski.pl/) region,
which is located in the south of Poland and has many tourist attractions.
The venue of the ESNA meeting is the Agricultural University in Krakow, National Research
The history of Agricultural studies in Krakow began in 1806 when the Chair of Farming
was established at the Krakow Academy (the Jagiellonian University). During 1890 -1923 the
Agronomy Studies were part of the Faculty of Philosophy at the Jagiellonian University. The
Faculty of Agriculture was set up in 1923 (the Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Forestry since
1949). This faculty was transformed into an independent University of Agriculture in 1953 (more
historical information on page: www.ar.krakow.pl/english/ ).
At present, Agricultural University in Krakow named after Hugo Kollataj educates about
13,000 students at 7 faculties and Interfaculty Study of Biotechnology in 12 major fields and 28
specialisations.
The National Research Institute of Animal Production - SRI situated in Balice near Krakow
(www.izoo.krakow.pl/english/) is one of the largest Polish scientific research institutes accountable
to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. It was established as the Zootechnical
Experimental Station in 1946. At present, the Institute has six scientific Departments and 12
Experimental Stations all over Poland.
Malopolska Association for Agricultural Extension (MAAE) was established in 1993. The
main goals of the MAAE are: creation proper conditions for development of agricultural extension,
and agricultural education; better using of intellectual and research potential of the University and
research institutions.
Following the decision of the General Assembly taken in Dubna the XXXVIII ESNA Meeting
What is ESNA / Who are ESNA’s
participants
The European Society for New
Methods in Agricultural Research (ESNA) is
an international society established in
Wageningen (The Netherlands) in 1969 with
the aims of exchanging ideas and techniques
to promote the advancement of agricultural
sciences. The original scope - the coordination
of research in the application of
nuclear techniques in agriculture – has
gradually changed and now the Society also
covers aspects of environment protection and
the application of new methods and
biotechnology in agricultural research. The
Society organizes annual meetings in various
European countries and the scientific
programme is devoted to fundamental and
applied issues from the mentioned areas
(scientific topics of the 6 working groups).
GENERAL INFORMATION
ESNA Meeting 2008, 27 th -31 st August 2008, Krakow, POLAND
Conference venue
The XXXVIII meeting will be held at the Congress Center of University of Agriculture in Krakow
(www.ar.krakow.pl/english/) located in the south of Poland, for registration, Opening Ceremony,
invited lectures, working group’s sessions and poster session. For any question or problem please
Krakow (www.krakow.pl/en/), a city wrapped in legend, where time flows differently, and
where every moment becomes a moment of history. For centuries Krakow was the capital of
Poland, the seat of kings, drawing great scholars and artists from the whole world. It is their talents
and imagination we must thank for the city's rich legacy of unique historical relics, which reflect
the most important trends in European culture.
The renaissance Royal Castle at Wawel, the gothic St Mary's Basilica, the historical trade pavilions
of the Cloth Hall, the former separate Jewish city of Kazimierz, and even the Nowa Huta district,
absorbed by Krakow together with its socialist-realist, industrial architecture, are all places which
make a visit to Krakow extremely worthwhile.
Although the city no longer plays such an important administrative role, for many people,
thanks to its rich history, Krakow nevertheless represents a synthesis of all things Polish,
connecting tradition with modernity. In the special atmosphere of the beautiful and mysterious
streets of the Old Town and Kazimierz you will find everything you need to allow you to escape
from everyday life. Galleries full of exhibitions, cafes, pubs and restaurants: all of this is an integral
part of any visit to Krakow. And all this is merely a modest part of what we can offer travellers
seeking exciting destinations on the world map.
Travel information
HOW TO GET TO KRAKOW
By plane:
Cracow has its own international airport (www.lotnisko-balice.pl/strona_en.html), appropriately
named after the Pope, John Paul II, who was born near the city. Almost all the major airlines such
as British Airways and Lufthansa fly to Cracow with the budget airlines appearing in greater and
greater numbers (EasyJet, Ryanair, Central Wings etc.). A number of routes also land at nearby
Katowice, such as the ones offered by Wizzair from London, Paris and Barcelona. Once you've
arrived at Cracow Balice you shouldn't have any trouble continuing your journey. Taxis are still
relatively cheap in Poland and you can book one online or grab one from the rank for around 70
PLN (i.e. 20 €) into town. Alternatively hike 200 metres (or grab the free shuttle bus) to the
airport's small train platform and take advantage of the fast and cheap shuttle service to Cracow's
central station. Tickets are 8PLN (i.e. 3 €) and the service runs about every 35 minutes taking 15
minutes to get there.
By rail:
The main station (Dworzec Głowny www.intercity.pl/) is in walking distance of the city centre as
well as the Conference Centre.
Krakow is easily and comfortably accessible by train from all larger cities in Poland, e.g. the
journey by InterCity train from Warsaw takes only 2.5 hours.
Apart from local transport systems, Krakow also has direct railway links with Berlin, Budapest,
Bucharest (from June to August trains also run to Varna), Hamburg, Kiev (from June to August
trains also run to Odessa), Lviv, Prague, Vienna, Żilin.
All trains stop at the Main Railway Station.
Detailed information regarding links: http://www.pkp.com.pl/english/index.php
By bus:
You may travel by bus from all main cities in Europe. For instance, from London it takes 24 hours
to reach Krakow Regional Bus Station, which is situated in Bosacka St. 18. Busses are quite
comfortable and relatively cheap.
By car:
When you decide to travel by car you should know that the western and sauthern borders you cross
without stoppage and custom chacking (Poland from 21 of December 2007 is in Schengen Zone).
You will need an international certificate of insurance cover, and possibly proof of exhaust
emission control on your car. Spot checks on vehicles by grim-faced police are common, and if you
plan to stay in central Krakow, remember that much of it is pedestrianised, or has prohibitive
6

parking restrictions. However, around the Congress Centre of the University of Agriculture there is
a huge parking area where you will be able to park your car.
Domestic roads and motorways traveling through Krakow:
Particular focus of this year’s conference will be on New methods in agricultural improvement
and hazard assessment. The workshop (plenary sessions) will join together all papers regarding
the topic and each morning a key lecture and three-four papers selected by chairperson of WG1-6
will be presented in the plenary session. The WGs activity will be only in the afternoon. Also the
plenary lectures will be focused on the given topic. Prof. Andrzej Lysak and Dr hab. Andrzej
Sechman together with the scientific committee will co-ordinate the workshop on the below given
topics. We recommend that the contributed papers close to this topic be entered not only in the six
existing working groups but also in this workshop (please mark it in the APPLICATION FORM
copy (by post) to the Local Organizers as well as to the Chairperson of the Working Group (or
Workshop) before 30 April 2008, to ensure its publication in the Book of Abstracts. The
Chairperson will confirm the submitted contribution by e-mail ONLY. Authors must bear in mind
that their abstract(s) will not be published if they do not submit the respective confirmation about
their effective participation to the Conference and the payment before 15 May 2007 (the payment
deadline is not related to authors who received a grant).
The abstract has to contain:
Working group N°/Workshop (on upper side), the title (in capitals), name and surname of author(s),
affiliation and full mailing address of authors, and e-mail address if any. The text should be typed
