Cruising Workshop with<br />

Feb. 24-25<br />

The Seven Seas Cruising Association is hosting a two-day<br />

workshop with famed cruiser/author Nigel Calder in<br />

Dania, FL on Feb. 24-25.<br />

The course will be taught by Nigel Calder and will<br />

include topics such as choosing a cruising boat, living with<br />

a diesel engine, how not to get into a mess when anchoring<br />

or docking, what to do if you run aground, and how to handle<br />

heavy weather. Also covered will be issues relating to<br />

setting up the boat’s systems to operate in a trouble-free<br />

manner, general safety and even crew morale.<br />

The workshop will be held at the RTM STAR Center, 2<br />

West Dixie Highway, Dania Beach, FL 33304 (http://<br />

Cost is $250 per person for SSCA members, $300 for<br />

Preparation Symposium,<br />

Orlando, FL, March 1-2<br />

BoatUS, in conjunction with the Marine<br />

Industries Association of Florida (MIAF)<br />

and the Marine Industries Association of<br />

South Florida (MIASF), will be hosting<br />

the Marina Hurricane Preparation<br />

Symposium in Orlando on March 1-2. The symposium<br />

will be held at the Rosen Plaza Hotel at 9700 International<br />

Drive, Orlando, FL 32819. Its purpose is “to minimize the<br />

impact on business from the next inevitable hurricane.”<br />

Cost is $150 if registered before Feb. 1.<br />

Attendees are expected to be businesses with docks,<br />

including marinas, boatyards and boat clubs. They will look<br />

at the practical, political, and legal aspects of reducing the<br />

impact of future hurricanes and saving docks, boats and<br />

businesses. Topics discussed will be:<br />

• Learn from marina operators what works and what doesn’t.<br />

• Proven techniques to reduce damage to boats and docks.<br />

• Find out what you can and can’t do legally to prepare<br />

boats.<br />

• Engineering guidelines to “harden” a facility.<br />

• Outline statewide hurricane preparation strategies and<br />

potential legislation to reduce damage.<br />

• Discuss ideas and get questions answered.<br />

• Check out the latest state-of-the-art products.<br />

• Meet vendors with new technologies that make it happen.<br />
