HHS Racial and Ethnic Categories<br />
I. American Indian or Alaskan Native: A person hav<strong>in</strong>g orig<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> any <strong>of</strong> the orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />
peoples <strong>of</strong> North America, and who ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s cultural identification through tribal<br />
affiliation or community recognition.<br />
II. Asian or Pacific Islander: A person hav<strong>in</strong>g orig<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> any <strong>of</strong> the orig<strong>in</strong>al peoples <strong>of</strong><br />
the Far East, Southeast Asia, the Indian subcont<strong>in</strong>ent, or the Pacific Islands. This area<br />
<strong>in</strong>cludes Ch<strong>in</strong>a, India, Japan, Korea, the Philipp<strong>in</strong>e Islands, and Samoa.<br />
III. Black, not <strong>of</strong> Hispanic Orig<strong>in</strong>: A person hav<strong>in</strong>g orig<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> any <strong>of</strong> the black racial<br />
groups <strong>of</strong> Africa.<br />
IV. Hispanic: A person <strong>of</strong> Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American,<br />
or other Spanish culture or orig<strong>in</strong>, regardless <strong>of</strong> race.<br />
V. White, not <strong>of</strong> Hispanic Orig<strong>in</strong>: A person hav<strong>in</strong>g orig<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> any <strong>of</strong> the orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

Special Populations:<br />
Individuals from special populations (m<strong>in</strong>orities, cancer survivors, HIV+ <strong>in</strong>dividuals,<br />
pregnant and breast-feed<strong>in</strong>g women) can NOT be arbitrarily excluded from participation<br />
on a study. All exclusions must be justified based on establishment that <strong>in</strong>clusion is<br />
<strong>in</strong>appropriate with respect to the health <strong>of</strong> the research subjects or the purpose <strong>of</strong> the<br />
research.<br />

The Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Investigations Branch (CIB) <strong>of</strong> CTEP is responsible <strong>for</strong> scientific oversight<br />
and coord<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> large, multicenter cl<strong>in</strong>ical trials explor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>novative disease<br />
therapeutics and biomarkers. CIB partners with public and private entities to expand<br />
