RADIO HIGHLIGHTS
Expressions Classical Series – This May, listen Mondays at noon (with a
rebroadcast at 9:00pm as part of By Special Invitation) to WSKG’s latest season of the
Expressions: Classical Series.
5/6 The Dave Eggar Quartet: Dave Eggar has performed throughout the United States and Asia, specializing in both
traditional and innovative repertoire. Their recent release, The Yoga Sessions: Mozart, is an innovative fusion of Mozart
and World Music created with yoga icon Derek Beres.
5/13 Gretchen Hull: Currently earning her master’s degree at the Boyer College of Music and Dance at Temple
University under Charles Abramovic, Gretchen Hull is a 2011 graduate of Houghton College, where she studied piano
performance under Fleisher student William Newbrough. (Presented by Classical Pianists of the Future.)
5/20 Elmar Oliveira and John Covelli: Violinist Elmar Oliveira expands repertoire boundaries as a champion of
both contemporary music and rarely-heard works of the past, devotes considerable energy to the development of
younger artists and enthusiastically supports the efforts and art of modern violin makers. During pianist John Covelli's
two decade tenure as Music Director of the Binghamton Philharmonic, he also served as Principal Conductor of the
Glendale Symphony, as well as Music Director of the Greater Palm Beach Symphony.
5/27 Steven Nanni and Pej Reitz: Steven L. Nanni is a fast-rising world class bel canto tenor who displays an
extraordinary voice in opera, oratorio and song literature. Steven recently debuted as Beppe in Leoncavallo’s
Pagliacci, and as Tamino in Mozart’s Die Zauberflote in Washington, D.C. Pianist Pej Reitz is a native of the
Binghamton area. She received her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in piano performance with accompanying
emphasis from Boston University, the New England Conservatory, and Binghamton University.
EarthSky: WSKG has made the daily feature EarthSky part of its Morning Edition
broadcast for many years. Sadly, the producers have decided to end the radio series at
the end of May. The final broadcast of EarthSky will air Friday, May 31st. The website
for the program, earthsky.org, will continue.
New Yorkers face some of the highest taxes in the country, and local governments
across the state are struggling to make ends meet. Consolidation could address
some of these issues, but many communities have refused to consider the idea. What
is consolidation Can it really save the day Join Crystal Sarakas for this discussion live.
Tuesday, May 7th, LIVE at 7:00pm
Every day, an active duty soldier is discharged from the military and returns home to
start a new part of his or her life. Some return because service has ended, others
because of injuries obtained while serving. All of them will face a period of
readjustment to civilian life, and many will be dealing with post-traumatic stress
disorder, anxiety problems, and fear about their future outside of the military. Join
Crystal Sarakas for this Community Conversation on After the War live.
The newest novel by the versatile and prolific Liz Rosenberg – poet, critic, professor of
English at Binghamton University – is The Laws of Gravity. She joins Bill Jaker to tell
about the story of a family struggling with life, death, medical and legal issues.
Tuesday, May 14th, LIVE at 1:00pm, rebroadcast at 7:00pm
Many corners of upstate New York seem to have landmarks of historic value
threatened by misunderstandings and the passage of time. In King Bridge Over
Troubled Waters, Karen Van Etten recounts the struggle to preserve the Zenas King
Bowstring Bridge in her hometown of Newfield and the broader questions of living
history and community life.
Tuesday, May 28th, LIVE at 1:00pm, rebroadcast at 7:00pm
