Before ANTIQUES ROADSHOW can pack up its trunk and wave aloha to Honolulu, Hawaii, host Mark L. Walberg and appraiser Anthony Slayter-
Ralph pay a visit to Shangri La, home of the late heiress Doris Duke and one of Hawaii's most architecturally significant homes. At the Hawai'i
Convention Center, guests hope for fame and fortune, too, with a wide assortment of objects to be appraised, including a first edition copy of Jack
London's Call of the Wild; a 1915 Hawaiian flag quilt, bearing the coat of arms of King Kamehameha; and a violin and bow purchased for the owner's
aunt in 1921 and kept in storage for the last 40 years. Although it's accompanied by a bill of sale claiming the instrument is a valuable Camilli from
1737, the violin actually is a fine forgery - so fine that the pair still is valued at $12,000-$15,000 at auction.
8pm Into the Deep: America, Whaling & the World: American Experi
For two centuries, American whale oil lit the world -- powering the start of the industrial revolution and laying the groundwork for a truly global
economy. From its stunning rise as an economic force in the 18th century, to its precipitous decline in the decades following the Civil War, the
whaling industry mapped millions of miles of uncharted ocean, opened new seaways and markets, employed the world's most multi-cultural
workforce, and shrunk the globe by bringing once remote reaches of the earth into contact as never before -- all the while capturing the American
imagination. From director Ric Burns (New York: A Documentary Film, Ansel Adams, The Donner Party) "Into the Deep: Whaling & America"
explores America's first global industry. And as Americans now see fortunes rise and fall on the global energy and consumer markets, the rapid
commoditization of whales and the sharp decline of the whaling industry serve as a stark reminder of the volatility of the global marketplace.
8pm Martin Clunes: Horse Power
The Animal
On this journey, Martin wants to find out how the horse became so important to us. How did we manage to tame such a huge, nervous prey animal
and make it both our servant and our friend? At home on his farm in Dorset, Martin rides his own horse Chester and explains how he was drawn into
the equine world by his wife and daughter. To find out what makes horses tick Martin flies to Dubai, to the grand opening of the £1.7 billion Meydan
racecourse. There he meets champion jockey Frankie Dettori and top trainer Luca Cumani, for a fascinating insight into horse psychology. He then
heads further east to the heart of Mongolia, where he tracks down the one remaining horse breed that has never been tamed by man: the Przewalski
horse, known in Mongolia as the Takhi. On the walls of the Niaux Cave, hidden high in the Pyrenees Mountains, Martin finds an extraordinary
14,000-year-old record of how our relationship with horses began. He also meets the famous horse whisperer Monty Roberts to learn how to
improve his relationship with Chester, and understand how that mysterious bond allowed us to communicate with horses in the first place. On a
windswept beach in the south of France, Martin meets the extraordinary trainer, Jean Francois Pignon, who has taken that communication to the
ultimate extreme. At the Weipers Centre for Equine Welfare in Glasgow, Martin attends a delicate operation on a seven-month-old foal with a leg
fracture and learns why this powerful, athletic animal is designed the way it is. In the desert sands of the Gulf, Martin meets the Bedouin, who
developed one of the world's most ancient horse breeds, the Arabian. Horses can help humans because of their unique communication skills. Martin
flies to Arizona to visit a rehab clinic where they are using equine assisted therapy on patients being treated for a range of problems from alcoholism
to anorexia. Finally Clunes joins Laura Lee, Nevada resident and lover of the wild American mustang. In a helicopter they fly over the high desert in
midwinter, to catch a glimpse of the mustang herds running free in their natural habitat, the way all horses once lived.
9pm Martin Clunes: Horse Power
The Servant and the Symbol
Not so very long ago, everyone knew how to ride a horse. Today, the biggest link most of us still have with horses is the races. Martin's company's
horse, Buffalo Stampede, is running at Fontwell racecourse in Sussex for the first time in a year since a leg injury. The horse tires and comes in last,

ut Martin is just glad to see it cross the finishing line without injury. The everyday traffic of horses may have vanished from London's streets. But the
British monarchy still uses horses - and plenty of them - to keep tradition alive. Clunes has special access to a rehearsal of the State Opening of
Parliament and rides in one of the carriages from the Royal Mews, via the Palace, into the heart of Parliament. To find out how the horse came to be
associated with wealth and power, Martin heads for Asti in northern Italy. The Palio horse race dates right back to the 1200s when the local
aristocracy raced their horses against each other as a way to measure up their status and superiority. Martin soaks up the thrills and dangers of the
event, where the crowd treats the jockeys like football stars - or the modern equivalent of valiant knights. To understand why medieval knights
commanded such honor and respect, Martin travels to Warwick Castle to see what it was like to ride into battle, dressed in a suit of armour. He also
meets the modern equivalent of the armored knight, the Greater Manchester Police mounted unit and learns how horses are trained to quell potential
violence in rowdy crowds. Clunes then heads for the U.S.A. to learn that the old Wild West is still alive and kicking, and the horse is still very much a
part of American life. In Las Vegas, rodeo horses are treated like kings; the more they buck the better the crowds love them. Then it's on to Arizona
to learn the traditional ways of the cowboy, still in use today. Surprisingly, the horse was extinct in America until it was reintroduced by Christopher
Columbus. Yet it wasn't long after that before Native American Indians became master horsemen. Martin joins the Sioux tribe in South Dakota, for
their annual "horse nation" commemorative ride across the frozen prairie. Martin's final journey is to one of the remotest parts of Central Asia to meet
some of the world's greatest horse people. He experiences life amongst the nomadic Kazakh tribes people, virtually unchanged since they first
harnessed the power of the horse 6,000 years ago. Nowhere on earth is there a culture still so utterly reliant on the horse.
10pm Martin Clunes -‐ Man to Manta
resident of these warm, blue waters has so far eluded him - the reef manta, one of evolution's true masterpieces, massive creatures which can weigh
10pm Renaissance of Mata Ortiz
The amazing story of how an intrepid American adventurer and a brilliant self-taught Mexican artist transformed a dying desert village into a home for
world-class ceramics is told in this heart-warming and beautiful documentary. When Spencer MacCallum walked into a second-hand store in
Deming, New Mexico, in 1976 and bought three pieces of pottery, he had no idea that he was about to embark on a journey that would lead to the
revival of an ancient art form. Finding his way to Mata Ortiz, Mexico, MacCallum partnered with self-taught artist Juan Quezada and slowly they
created an industry that today is known world-wide not only for its interpretations of a centuries-old style of ceramics, but for stunning post-modern
works as well. The Renaissance of Mata Ortiz tells the improbable story of how Quezada (without a kiln or a potter's wheel and using only found
materials) and MacCallum both experienced creative and personal breakthroughs which led to dazzling, innovating works by Quezada and a passing
of the torch to younger, award-winning artists such as Diego Valles.
among these eucalypts were overcome by the flames. Millions died. But burned and traumatized survivors tenderly nursed back to health at wildlife
FDR's last presidential campaign speech, concerts by Bruce Springsteen and others. In 1999, it looked as if Fenway would be razed to make way for
a new ballpark. Luckily, wiser heads prevailed and Boston's most popular attraction (more tourists visit Fenway than the Freedom Trail) survived.
8pm 1955 World Series: 7 Days of Fall
The 1955 World Series - Seven Days of Fall' about the 1955 Brooklyn Dodger/New York Yankee World Series is based upon the poem, entitled
"1955", by James T. Crawford. In unprecedented style, the presentation uniquely blends the normal documentary elements of archival film footage,
still images, narration, player and fan interviews, period music, and recital of the poem to recount this timeless story 50 years later. It's a program
about dedication, teamwork, belief in one self and commitment to achievement against all odds; the story of the Brooklyn Dodger's only World
Championship after 65 years of futility, and of the team's unique connection with the community that so closely identified with it. '1955' is more then a
sports story, but a time capsule of a period in American history like no other. Or as, the documentary's epilogue states: To believe was to achieve ...
back in 1955".
9pm Triangle Fire: American Experience
On March 25th, 1911, a fire broke out in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York's Greenwich Village. The blaze ripped through the congested
loft; huge piles of trimmings fed the flames. Petrified workers desperately tried to make their way downstairs, but the factory owners kept the doors

on the 9th floor locked and the woefully inadequate fire escape soon crumpled. Hundreds of horrified on-lookers arrived just in time to see young
men and women jumping from the windows. By the time the fire had burned itself out, 146 people were dead. Less than two years earlier, the
workers of the factory had been leaders in an industry-wide strike to protest dismal wages and dangerous working conditions. Despite unlikely
support from some of the wealthiest women in the city, including Anne Morgan, most of the workers returned to the their shops without having their
demands met. It took the tragedy of the fire and the ensuing public outrage to force government action. The landmark legislation that followed gave
New Yorkers the most comprehensive workplace safety laws in the country.
What will it mean when most of us can afford to have the information in our DNA -- all three billion chemical letters of it -- read, stored and available
meet cancer patients returned to robust health and a cystic fibrosis sufferer breathing easily, because scientists have been able to pinpoint and
neutralize the genetic abnormalities underlying their conditions. But we also meet ethicists convinced we need to consider the moral dilemmas raised
by the new technology. Will it help or hurt us to know that we are likely to come down with a serious disease? What if such information falls into the
hands of insurance companies, employers, prospective mates? Should parents be allowed to select embryos with specific characteristics? Both
ominous and promising, the new era of personalized, gene-based medicine is one thing for certain: it's relevant to everyone. Because soon you will
The Thomashefskys: Music and Memories of a Life in the Yiddish Theater
Bringing to life the words and music of the American Yiddish theater, the lead characters -- Bessie and Boris Thomashefsky (the grandparents of
San Francisco Symphony music director Michael Tilson Thomas) emigrated to America from Eastern Europe in the 1880s. While in their teens, they
began to play major roles in New York's Yiddish theater. For Jewish immigrants on the lower East Side of Manhattan, the theater was central to their
lives, and provided a stage for the new ideas that were shaping the transition to an American way of life. In "The Thomashefskys," Tilson Thomas
serves as guide through the lives and repertoire of his grandparents. Performed at the New World Symphony's spectacular new Frank Gehrydesigned
home in Miami, Tilson Thomas shares the stage with a 30-piece orchestra and ensemble cast to bring the repertoire and words of Bessie
and Boris to life. With time, aspects of klezmer and cantorial sounds became more integrated and more American, as Jewish composers became
immersed in their new surroundings, greatly influencing composers like Irving Berlin and George Gershwin.
