I am honored to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Scripps College Academy.
For 10 years, Scripps College Academy (SCA) has provided mentorship, college access resources, and
academic enrichment to high-achieving young women in the greater Los Angeles area. Since 2002, the
program has grown from a two-week summer experience serving 30 students, to a nationally recognized
year-round program serving more than 325 students. The development of the program is a credit to the
dedication of Scripps College staff and faculty who are eager to share their talents, expertise, and time.
SCA is an exceptional example of Scripps’ continued leadership as an institution dedicated to higher
education access and diversity.
The Scripps College Academy takes some of the unique aspects of a Scripps College education—
dedicated and accessible faculty members, a community of women scholars and leaders, and a
challenging, stimulating, interdisciplinary curriculum—and makes them available to local middle
and high school students. By expanding the scope of students’ knowledge and introducing them to
college-level critical thinking and writing, SCA prepares its participants for success at the nation’s top
institutions of higher education and introduces them to a liberal arts educational experience.
We are grateful for the support that individuals, foundations, and corporations have bestowed upon
SCA during the last 10 years. It is only through this generosity that SCA has flourished and continues to
deliver high-quality programming at no cost to participants, their families, or their schools.
Initiatives such as the Scripps College Academy are what originally drew me to Scripps College. As
President, there is no greater joy than seeing the world-class education that Scripps students enjoy
shared with outstanding young women in our local communities. I am pleased to salute Scripps College
Academy on the occasion of this remarkable program’s 10th anniversary, and I am proud to lead an
institution committed to higher education access.
