Scripps College Academy Scholars Span the United States Sofia Arevalo Roosevelt High School ‘12 UC Berkeley ‘16 “The opportunity to interact and conduct research with professors and present to my peers has improved my confidence and public speaking.” Jennifer Arias Foshay Learning Center ‘11 Scripps College ‘15 Gates Millennium Scholar “Interacting with Scripps students and faculty gave me a glimpse of what life at a small liberal arts college is like. Coming to Scripps, I already had a network of people who could help me with the transition.” Mayowa Ige Upland High School ‘12 Pomona College ‘16 “My favorite part of SCA was the Math and Science Scholars Program; working closely with the Colleges’ faculty strengthened my passion for the sciences, and led me to choose a natural science major. “ 2005 2006 The SCA Tutoring program is launched, providing service-learning opportunities to Scripps students and weekly academic support to local middle and high school students. A California Educational Facilities Authority grant further expands year-round programming and increases the number of SCA staff. The Middle School College Club program is launched.

Now, I am part of an empowering and inspiring community of young women, which has let me grow as an individual and scholar.” Since the first graduating class in 2005, SCA Scholars have enrolled in more than 65 colleges and universities across the U.S. Consistently, SCA Scholars graduate from high school with top academic honors and pursue higher education. Many earn prestigious national awards following high school, including the Gates Millennium and Posse Foundation Scholarships. One hundred percent of the SCA Scholars high school class of 2012 will enroll in higher education within six months of graduation; 95% will matriculate directly into four-year institutions. Of this group, over half will attend a private college or university and 47% will attend a “very selective” or “most selective” school. Deborah Won Warren High School ‘11 Yale University ‘15 “At SCA, I was constantly encouraged to think critically when confronted with an issue or idea. That experience has helped me prepare for college and for life!” 2007 The Kathryne Beynon Foundation funds the inaugural Math and Science Scholars Program to provide science research opportunities. 2008 The program is re-named “Scripps College Academy” to reflect the year-round format. SCA expands work-study opportunities for Scripps College students to more than 30 annually.
