Community Outreach Programs In addition to the SCA Scholars Program, Scripps College Academy provides academic and college preparatory services, free of charge, to young women and parents in the local community. Programs include SCA Tutoring, a weekly academic assistance program open to female students in grades 6-12, and SCA College Club, a series of college-introductory workshops for middle school girls. These programs reach between 200-250 students each year, and provide valuable professional development and service learning opportunities to the Scripps College students who deliver them. Kelly Hewitt ‘08, director of Scripps College Academy, advises an SCA Scholar. 2009 Scripps College and SCA: A Collaboration The mission of Scripps College is to educate women to develop their intellects and talents through active participation in a community of scholars, so that as graduates they may contribute to society through public and private lives of leadership, service, integrity, and creativity. SCA has, since its inception, functioned as an extension of Scripps College’s mission and a meaningful avenue for community service and engagement. Focused on expanding higher education access and liberal arts education awareness, SCA engages a demographic that historically has been excluded from these benefits: high achieving, firstgeneration, college-bound young women from low-income urban communities. At the core of the program is a group of passionate and dedicated Scripps College faculty, staff, and students who serve as mentors, tutors, and advocates for program participants. To date, nearly 40% of all Scripps College faculty members have taught in SCA programs. Additionally, SCA programs provide service learning and professional development opportunities for more than 35 Scripps College undergraduates each year. Approximately half of Scripps alumnae who worked with SCA now work in fields related to education, often in under-served populations. Since 2005, 25 SCA Scholars have matriculated to The Claremont Colleges—19 of those to Scripps College. True to the disciplined and ambitious nature of SCA Scholars, these students have maintained a 100% retention and graduation rate, and nearly all have chosen to work or volunteer with the SCA program during their time on campus. Ashley Franklin becomes the first SCA Scholar to graduate from Scripps College. 47 students comprise SCA’s 7th cohort. SCA launches “SCA Connect,” an online platform for participants to interact and access college preparatory resources.

SCA is awarded the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award, the nation’s highest honor for such a program. 100% of the high school graduating class admitted to four-year colleges or universities.
