Dear Friends, 

2012 was a year of transition and hard work. We started the year, working with 

McKinsey & Company on a strategic planning process. Soliciting feedback from stakeholders, 

clients, staff and board members, we learned about changes in our clients’ needs and shifts 

in our funding landscape. We listened to this sometimes difficult feedback with an open mind, 

prepared to integrate new ideas and improve our programs to best serve youth in crisis. 

We begin 2013 with a renewed sense of purpose and focus: 

• dedicate our service to 10-17 year old youth in crisis 

• strengthen outreach to GLBTQ students and other school-age youth 

• launch a new pilot program called Transitions 

• develop technology solutions to improve service delivery to young people 

In the midst of these changes, I’m continually amazed by the commitment of our staff. Day in 

and day out, our staff provide a welcoming and safe place for youth who have nowhere to go. 

In the midst of sexual exploitation, physical abuse, and mental health crises, our staff go the 

extra mile to make sure each youth feels important, accepted, and safe. 

Recently I received a phone call from a man who wanted to recognize all those people who 

made a positive difference in his life. Though he stayed at The Bridge long ago, he still remembered 

the caring, thoughtful staff and the impact they made on his life. On a more somber 

note, in late fall, several staff members and I attended the funeral of a young man who accessed 

services at The Bridge. Just starting college, he was off to a promising start until his 

life was cut short in a hit and run car accident. The sorrow and grief of our staff was evident 

as we worked together to cope through the initial moments of that tragedy. 

In this way, The Bridge continues to make an impact on youth every day. Our staff gives youth 

hope and pride in who they are and what they can achieve. And they in turn give us hope; 

we see families reunify to face challenges together and we witness those precious moments 

when youth discover their own unique strengths and visions for their future. This is what the 

youth remember about The Bridge.

Mission: Helping Youth in Crisis 

The Bridge for Youth is a safe and welcoming place for youth ages 10-17 who have 

no one to turn to and nowhere to go. With a dedicated staff and strong support 

from the community, we provide safe shelter and supportive services, helping youth 

stay off the streets. Our unique program is designed to help reunify youth with their 

families whenever possible or to help them find the next best option. 

Community Need 

2,500/night under 17 

On any given night, an estimated 

2,500 youth under the age of 

17 experience homelessness in 

Minnesota. 

Half under 21 

Nearly half of the homeless population 

in Minnesota is under the age of 21. 

51% are abused 

51% have been physically or 

sexually abused. 

89% enrolled in school 

89% of homeless youth age 17 and 

under are enrolled in school 

Meet Carlie. 

Divorce had taken its toll on 15-year old 

Carlie. Moving between her Mom’s apartment 

and Dad’s house, she was constantly fighting 

with both. Out of anger, she moved in with her 

18-year old friend. Life didn’t get any easier. 

One day Carlie exploded, physically assaulting 

her roommate. Police were called. Carlie was charged with assault. 

Police delivered Carlie to The Bridge where she would stay for a few nights, 

awaiting her court date, and avoiding time in jail. She kept to herself, sizing 

up the staff and other teens, unwilling to let her guard down. 

Counselor Craig Gleason changed that. Chopping vegetables in the kitchen, 

alongside Carlie, he asked, “So, what brought you here”. That simple 

question unleashed a flood of information. Carlie recounted her story, finally 

feeling like someone was listening.

Craig encouraged Carlie to identify her strengths. Accustomed to viewing 

herself through a negative lens, Carlie struggled. Over the next few days, she 

began to identify herself as determined, passionate, and resourceful. 

Carlie and her parents met for a family meeting. Fortunately for Carlie, the 

charges against her were dropped. More importantly, she decided to move 

back with her Mom, committing to improve their communication. 

A few weeks later, Carlie sent a letter to The Bridge. “Each and every one of 

you have helped me so much. Coming here and talking about everything 

has helped me. I’m putting the puzzle pieces back together”. Committed 

to staying on the right path, Carlie returned to The Bridge with her Mom for 

counseling. They are hopeful for a brighter future.

Program Summary 

& Outcomes 

Shelter 

Emergency Shelter for 10-17 year-old youth 

Open 24/7/365, the Emergency Shelter is a safe place to stay for a few hours or a few days. In addition to receiving 

basics like a warm bed, meals, showers, and supportive services, young people are always greeted with 

a warm welcome and strong emotional support. Staff help youth and their families explore strengths, identify 

resources, and develop strategies to resolve conflict. 

• Over 800 youth received services in the Emergency Shelter. 

• 69% of youth entering the Emergency Shelter were reunited with their families. 

• 16% exited to a safe non-family alternative. 

Transitions/Transitional Living Program for 16-17 year old youth 

Sometimes, reunifying with family takes longer then a few days. Or, returning home simply isn’t an option. The 

transition program offers a safe, supportive environment to work through issues and plan next steps. Program 

participants work with case managers to build new skills. Instructional programs focus on self-care, money and 

household management, continuing education, and employment. 

• 47 youth were served in the TLP Program. 

• 85% remained in school or were working during their stay. 

Counseling 

Family and Individual Counseling 

The Bridge offers free counseling to youth, parents, and families. Counselors provide emotional 

support as individuals and families look to resolve conflict, improve communication, and build 

stronger connections. 

• 636 hours of counceling were provided to 290 youth. 

• 290 youth received individual counseling, logging 636 hours of counseling sessions. 

24/7/365 Crisis Hotline & Walk-in Counseling 

Trained Bridge for Youth staff are available around the clock, in phone and in person, to counsel teens and 

families through difficult situations. A crisis can happen at any hour, day or night. With generous funding from 

Target, Fidelity, Wells Fargo, and Microsoft, The Bridge looks to add a “Text for Help” option to the crisis line. 

• Crisis Hotline counselors responded to 3,779 calls from people in crisis.

Supportive Programs

The Bridge operates several 

programs to support youth as they 

move out of crisis toward stability. 

Supportive Programs 

Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI) 

JDAI is a nationally recognized juvenile justice reform project. 

Rather than spend time in jail, first-time juvenile offenders stay in 

the Emergency Shelter while awaiting their scheduled court day. 

Receiving counseling and support, young people explore new 

strategies and set goals to move forward in positive directions. 

• 120 youth were served in this program. 

• 85% were reunified with families. 

Independent 365 and 24/7 Programs 

These two programs serve youth who are ready to live on their own. 

Navigating this process can be overwhelming. Case managers help 

every step of the way. From identifying affordable apartments, to 

interpreting lease requirements, and advising on budgeting and 

money management, staff support youth even after they’ve moved 

into an apartment. 

• 13 youth were served in the 365 program. 

• 22 youth were supported in the 24/7 program with 17 

receiving rent subsidies from The Bridge. 

Weekly Support Groups 

Weekly support groups help youth and their families stay on track 

with their goals. Open to current and former clients, or anyone in 

need of support, groups build community while encouraging positive 

social interaction. 

• 200 youth participated in weekly support groups. 

• Separate support groups are conducted for LGBTQ 

youth, young women, young men, and parents.

Partnerships 

Community members help advance the mission of The Bridge every day. Ikea funded a makeover 

of the Transitions living area. Circa Gallery donated gallery space and lots of labor for a special 

“Secret Struggle” art exhibition. FreeArts MN and A Rotta Love Dog Therapy provided enriching 

experiences for youth in our care. ARISE members ensure continued support for LGBTQ homeless 

youth. Broadway Family Physicians staff our weekly health clinic. Thank you to the many partners, 

volunteers and donors who contribute time and talent to The Bridge.
