the Lewisham Gateway scheme. The scheme will provide 1,000 new homes, new shopping and environmental improvements. Further investment in the High Street is planned. This centres on the extension and refurbishment of the Riverdale Shopping Centre and renewal of the public realm. In due course, the redevelopment of sites at Lewis Grove Island and Engate Street may take place. Catford Town Centre A4.10 The Council is also preparing an area action plan for Catford town centre, and proposals are currently being developed to create a pedestrianised civic space, linking the shopping centre to the north and the council offices and library to the south. Additionally, improvements to the shopping centre and public spaces are being proposed. Plans are being drawn up by English Partnerships for enhancement of the existing Catford and Catford Bridge stations and their environment, together with new residential development of up to 600 units at the former greyhound track to the north. New Cross A4.11 New Cross, on the northern tip of the borough, is home to Goldsmiths College. The college is key to the emerging creative and cultural offer in Lewisham and further expansion of the campus is proposed. The area is served by two stations, New Cross and New Cross Gate, both offering London Underground and suburban rail services and undergoing modernisation. Strengthening the Local Economy A4.12 Lewisham is not a major office location and is typically a ‘net exporter’ of people to work. However, it is rapidly emerging as a creative and cultural hotspot in London; further expansion is anticipated. Lewisham and Catford town centres are important administrative centres; the council, Lewisham University Hospital and a new police station are all large public sector employers. Lewisham is also the main retail centre of the borough. Currently, efforts are being directed towards achieving ‘metropolitan status’ with expansion in the retail and leisure sectors of between 4,000 and 7,000 sq.m being forecast.
