A Journal of Westfields Sports
From the Principal
As you read this copy of Westnews, we will already have commenced our
annual rollover to the 2009 timetable. This means that all years are promoted
to next years classes and ensures that meaningful work continues right up until
the last day. This also means that our current Year 9 students will be wearing
the senior uniform. In 2009 we expect that all students in years 7,8, 10 and 11
will be wearing the shirt with the school badge. An important step in the
rollover process is the official signing out of the students current year. This
requires students to return all outstanding textbooks and school resources and
to pay any outstanding fees and charges. If there are problems with the
payment of fees, parents can contact me at school at any time to discuss
options.
The final P and C meeting for the year will be next Wednesday 26 November.
This is our Christmas meeting and will be held at the Smithfield RSL Club at
7:00pm so we would like to see lots of parents attending.
After making the semi-final of the Davidson Shield, our open boy’s cricket
team progressed into the finals of the NSW all schools cricket competition.
They successfully defeated Oxley High School in their semi-final game and
played St Gregory’s Campbelltown in the final today. After batting first and
making 150 runs, St Gregory’s passed our score with eight wickets down and
only one over to spare in what was a very exciting match. Congratulations to
the team and coach Ian Gill for being the second best school cricket team in
NSW.
I had the pleasure of attending the Sports Person of the Year and School Blues
Night last week and once again was blown away by the achievements of our
talented sports students. Congratulations to all blues recipients and especially
to Sportsperson of the Year, Daniel Galati. I would also like to publicly
acknowledge the efforts of our Director of Sport, Joanne Kenny who ensures
that the talented sport program runs smoothly and efficiently throughout the
year.
From The Deputy Principal
On the 24 November, our school commences the 2009
school year. Rollover presents the opportunity to be ready
for 2009 studies with course outlines, book requirements and
assessment schedules. In addition, senior students have the
advantage of using their holiday time to gain the edge by
being well prepared for term 1.
HSC and SC students are awaiting their results from their
final exams. HSC students will be able to access their results
via SMS and the internet SC results will be delivered to the
school at the end of week 9.
Year 9 students moving into year 10 are reminded of the
8.10 start every day, and the need to change into the senior
blue school shirt.
Current year 10 students planning to continue into the
Preliminary course must have completed all modules of the
“Crossroads” course which has been presented by Mr Jarvis
and his talented team of helpers during the past week.
A number of Year 10 students have taken the option to
commence the work force or to continue their studies
through Tafe. We wish all departing students every success
with their employment , apprenticeships and further study.
While annual reports are being prepared, it is a good time for
students to reflect on their efforts for 2008. If the results are
disappointing, the time is right to establish better study
habits. Some students will be seeking ways to make good
results excellent.
9 PASS Excursion to Olympic Park
Year nine PASS students have been studying Australia’s
Sporting Identity throughout term four. To supplement this
unit of work many of our students visited Olympic Park to
get a hands on experience in Australia’s world dominating
sports.
Australia enjoys a great history and success in the sports of
tennis and swimming. Westfields Sports PASS students
enjoyed the opportunity of exploring the Tennis Centre and
Museum as well as competing in a variety of tennis oriented
games. The Aquatic Centre opened student’s eyes to the
impact of technology in the pool. Students operated high
tech timing and starting equipment as well as swimming in
the Speedo fast skins. The day was capped off with fun in
the whirl pool and swimming centre.
Nine PASS students’ behaviour, commitment and
competitive spirit on the day are to be commended. It was a
great excursion, a fun day out due to the positive attitude
displayed by our students.
Miss Taylor and Miss Healy
9 PASS Teachers
School Certificate documents will arrive during week 9, a
special assembly will be held to present School Certificates
on the 12 December 2008.
On 10 December, the school recognises effort, excellence
and achievement at our Annual Presentation evening.
Students and parents will receive invitations to this special
event held at Marconi Club.
World War One Walls
The new Year 12 students in Ms Gagic’s and Mr Griffith’s
Modern History classes spiced up their classroom walls last
week with murals of World War One images. They used
their artistic skills to draw maps of the Western Front, a
cross-section of a trench, and a diagram of a WWI soldier’s
equipment. The frescoes will be an invaluable aid as they
learn all about the conflict over the remainder of this term.
Well done to both classes on producing some professional
and colourful historical artworks!
