WestnewsA Journal of <strong>Westfields</strong> <strong>Sports</strong>From the Principal7 November, 20<strong>08</strong>Monday 27th October was a wonderful day in the history of <strong>Westfields</strong> <strong>Sports</strong>.Mr John Coates, President of the Australian Olympic Committee presented theschool with the 20<strong>08</strong> IOC Sport and Youth Trophy. The trophy is recognitionof <strong>Westfields</strong>’ contribution to sport and education at the highest levels and hasnever been awarded in Australia before. Ms Kate Ellis, The Federal Ministerfor Sport spoke about the importance of the partnership between sport andeducation and also congratulated the school on its achievements. Chris Bowen,local Federal MP and Assistant Treasurer presented Life Memberships to pastPrincipal, Mr Philip Tucker, to Director of Sport, Mrs Joanne Kenny and toAthletics Convenor, Mr Dan Suchy. Director General of Education andTraining, Mr Michael Coutts-Trotter also congratulated our school andofficially named our new Social Science block the “Tucker Building”. TheSport and Youth Trophy now has pride of place in our main foyer. Please dropin and have a look next time you visit us at school. I need to thank Mrs Wilsonand Mrs Kenny for their excellent organisation of the official ceremony andMr Monte and the construction team for the fantastic job on the gardens andlandscaping at the front of the school. I am sure you will agree that the schoolhas never looked better.All students officially sign out of their current year during week six before thecommencement of roll over in week seven. This means that all outstandingtextbooks, school resources must be returned and all fees paid before then.Parents have been reminded on numerous occasions throughout the year aboutthe payment of fees, however if there are problems with the payment of largeamounts of outstanding money, parents can contact me to organise a paymentplan.Most students have now completed their HSC exams and <strong>School</strong> Certificateexams are next week on Monday 10th, Tuesday <strong>11</strong>th and Friday 14thNovember. I would like to wish all Year 10 students good luck in theseimportant exams.Congratulations to our Head Football Coach, Trevor Morgan for his RotaryPride of Work Award. From The Deputy PrincipalStaff and Students of <strong>Westfields</strong> <strong>Sports</strong> were greatlyhonoured by the presentation of the International OlympicCommittees (IOC) Sport and Youth Trophy. The award wasrecognition for the promotion and development of sportingand educational programs linked to Olympians in youngpeople.No mobile phones or electronic devices are permitted inexam rooms. Students are advised to arrive 20 minutesbefore exams to allow for seating to be coordinated.Our rollover for the 2009 timetable will commence in week7 24th November. All clearance forms (issued week 6) willneed to be completed – with textbooks and uniformsreturned and fees attended to.Year 9 students are reminded that they may commencewearing the senior blue shirt – and that their classes willcommence at 8.10 each day.Our annual presentation night will take place at MarconiClub on Wednesday 10th December, Many students will berecognised for their excellence, effort and achievement.Parents will receive formal invitation.Three Scholarships are available for students in year 9/10, <strong>11</strong>and 12.Application forms are available in my office – allstudents are eligible to apply.Congratulations to the Music staff and students for theirexcellent musical presentation last Tuesday and Wednesdayevening. These numbers aredisplayed in A Block.Throughout the two days of the visit, over six hundredstudents, led by Mr. Yaguchi and Mr. Udagawa, were giventhe opportunity to sample school life as it is in Australia.Students from both schools were able to overcome culturaldifferences and language barriers to share an experience thatwas mutually educational and enjoyable over bush dancingand soccer on the oval.
