FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Congratulations to Mrs Ott (P&C) and her team for the outstanding organization of
the Steven Spellmaster show at the Smithfield RSL last Friday evening. The entire
audience was thrilled and thoroughly entertained by both the hypnotist and
members of the Westfields community who were keen participants. Thanks to the
parents, staff and students who made the night such a success.
Many thanks to those parents who have paid outstanding school charges over the
past two weeks. A reminder that subject and sport charges are now overdue. If you
are having trouble paying the full amount, please contact the school and we will
make arrangements to pay these charges by instalment.
Term two is a vital term for all students in relation to their studies. Half yearly
exams have been completed and students should be focusing on completing all set
class work and homework to the best of their ability. A regular program of study
and revision is also essential if students are to reach their potential. I expect that
students in Years 7 and 8 would be spending 60 minutes completing study and
homework every night. Students in Years 9 and 10, 90 minutes and students in
Years 11 and 12, 2-3 hours per night. Year 12 students only have nine school
weeks until their Trial HSC and they should have already commenced their study
for these important exams.
To assist Year 12 students, inspirational speaker John Coutis presented an
excellent session highlighting how students can overcome adversity and still fulfil
their dreams. John spoke of how students need to put in the effort to achieve
success in the HSC. By setting goals John demonstrated how anything is possible.
Many students reported how they were highly impressed by John’s life story.
Another reminder that our senior parent teacher and subject selection evening is on
Tuesday 30 June, 2009 and the junior evening is on Tuesday 7 July, 2009. If you
have not already done so, please place these dates on to your calendars at home.
These evenings are essential in building a strong home-school partnership so that
we are all working together to ensure that your sons and daughters are achieving to
their potential and making the most of the wonderful opportunities available to
them at Westfields Sports. We look forward to seeing all parents in attendance on
these evenings.
Our next P&C meeting is at 7pm on Wednesday 27 May 2007. Meetings are held
in the classrooms at the top of the Administration Block. These meetings provide
an excellent opportunity for parents to have their input into school planning and
directions. I look forward to seeing the classroom packed and to meeting lots of
new parents.
FRO M TH E DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Last week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday all Year 7
and Year 9 students completed the NAPLAN (National
Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy). Results will
be issued to parents upon completion of marking. Many
thanks to the Mathematics staff who coordinated the
effective operation of these tests.
With all half yearly examinations completed, the reporting
process is under way in earnest. Parents can expect reports to
be issued prior to parent teacher interviews - Senior 30 June,
2009 and Junior 7 July, 2009. It is very appropriate for Year
10 students to be considering their course options for 2010,
as they will be attending an HSC subject selection
presentation on 30 June. 2009. Parents and students are
advised to discuss career pathways and course preferences
with teachers, our careers adviser, TAFE and/or university
counsellors.
It is pleasing to see the number of Year 7 students
completing reading cards. Thank you to parents for your
support of this valuable program. Well over 400 reading
cards have been submitted with Mr Simpson’s 7R6 being the
champion reading class so far.
VISUAL ARTS
Year 8 Visual Arts Enrichment students have been working
hard to complete artworks for an Artlinks Exhibition to be
held in June. Students have been developing artworks based
on their own cultural heritage for this exhibition. The works
were inspired with an artist in residence program held last
year with the artist Bronwyn Bancroft. Bronwyn is a
contemporary Aboriginal artist who is widely exhibited and
published. The students have worked very diligently to
develop their own artistic process and complete the collage
works. Accompanying the works will be written responses
about the artworks. This experience has helped the students
of Art Enrichment become much more sophisticated artists,
who should be very proud of their Exhibition.
Two Year 11 students participated in a Bella Arts program
over the holidays. This was held at the Contemporary MCA
Gallery. I attended their exhibition there. Also two other
students were selected to participate in a National Arts
School program and have come back inspired and with
some great drawings. We look forward to their reports and
art images.
At last week’s assembly Fairfield library staff presented a
collection of great on-line resources for our students to
access. Included was a homework on-line advise service.
Congratulations to Mr Stowe’s jewellery class for their
stunning silver projects. It is always a pleasure to see
excellent achievement from enthusiastic students.
Congratulations to Mrs Walker for the inspiration leading to
great enthusiasm in art practices. Some wonderful images
have been emerging from her classes.
Twenty Year 12 students are taking part in Club Marconi
Youth Driver Safety Education program. Students have
reported that the lessons have been a great benefit in helping
them gain skills and confidence. A new group of twenty
students will commence lessons next week.
YEAR 7 TECHNO LOGY
The Year 7 Technology program includes jewellery making
and a favourite project with students is the silver ring.
Students are supplied with a piece of flat silver bar which
they have to cut, shape and then silver-solder to make a
circle. This first stage usually takes about two weeks. Then
begins another two weeks of careful finishing and polishing.
Many students give the ring as gifts to friends or family, who
can now wear a Westfields' ring with pride.
ARTS IN TH E DARK
On the 8 April, 2009 Year 12 put on their annual production
of Arts in the Dark. We decided to present the theme of
Lucky Seven. It was portrayed through music, dance, art and
drama pieces. However, it was unlucky when bad weather
cancelled the initial performance. Through planning,
organising and performing the show, Year 12 Drama learnt
the practical skills of site-specific, street and event theatre.
This production would not be possible without the
participation of the Creative Arts faculty. Year 12 Drama
would like to thank everyone for the support and hop all who
attended enjoyed the show.
KICKING PRACTICE WITH KRISNAN INU
Parramatta Eels NRL player and former Westfields Sports
student, Krisnan Inu returned to school on Wednesday to
share some of his goal kicking expertise with current rugby
league program members.
Mr G. Stowe
RUBY MOON
On the 14 May, 2009 Year 12 Drama visited Stella Maris
Colleges’ Star of the Sea Theatre in Manly to watch the play
Ruby Moon by Matt Cameron. We saw our prescribed text
come to life onstage, which helped us to understand how a
written text is translated into performance. We also stayed
for a question / answer forum held after the performance
with several Regional schools participating through video
conferencing. The actors and directors answered questions
posed by students. We really enjoyed the show and saw
much that will help us with our HSC essays. We would like
to give a big thank you to the school, Ms Holden and Ms
Dance-Wilson for this opportunity.
MR SUCHY LOSES IT !
PDHPE AND SPO RT REMINDER
Mrs J. Kenny
Director of Sport
Whilst it is commendable for students to be looking after
their hygiene and want to use a deodorant after PE or Sport,
it is important to remember that the spray can variety is not
suitable to use in the school environment. Roll on deodorant
is the most suitable and should be the only method used.
