This has been traced from history – a repeatable fact which ends to nothing but disputes. Disputes always have consequences, the worst perhaps is the spark of war. And this is what the Philippines cannot afford to face with regards to the continuing brawl over Bajo de Masinloc, internationally known to be the Scarborough Shoal against China. This controversial dispute has begun in 1997. Filipinos then, prevented Chinese vessels from entering within the vicinity of the shoal. This forced China to file protest against the motion of the Philippines. China, banking on its history has been claiming the Scarborough since 1935 as it is believed to be part of the Zhongsha Islands. Philippines on the other hand, claims that it has the sovereignty over the Shoal when it comes to geographical matters based on the provisions stated in Public International Law as well as in the United Nations Convention on the Law of Seas (UNCLOS). At first, there was no action seen resolving the issue. Yet, before the end of Academic Year 2011-2012, change started to take place. For instance, hallways with higher pathways were built in order to make sure that the students have the comfort of the road during rainy days. Further, they also fixed and cleaned the drainage system and constructed elevated flooring for the gym to prevent the entry of water. This is to eradicate the idea from the students that during rainy season, the university gym is transforming to another university pool. The school is not closing its eyes or covering its ears regarding this complains. It does not merely sit down, stare to and do nothing to solve these problems but the administration deliberates and evaluates things to make solutions to the problems which hinder the students from having a conducive place for learning. With all the efforts of the school to address our concerns, we students, should do our share too. We should extend our helping hands to preserve this new infrastructures and be considerate in giving the school ample time to improve the facilities and services. We should not always focus on those flaws that our school has. Instead, let’s try to be vigilant and appreciative of the effort of the school in giving us the best that it can offer. Let’s not waste the school’s efforts. Let’s trust on the plan of the school for innovations and improvements of its facilities and services. Cooperation among us students, is necessary in making all these plans a reality.
First let me clear to you that I’m not a God who has the right to declare punishments on people who have sinned but I’m not also a stone to just play blind and watch wrong deeds pass me by. The reality is, the world is filled with people who are blinded by their power or should I say, authority to the point that the outcome of their actions are already below the belt and very unhealthy. They could be your brother, sister, best friend, boss, or even your neighbor who’s fond of dirty talking all day. Let’s take for example these three out of the many people you’ll meet somewhere down the lonely roads. First is your ever supportive teacher in grade school who gave high grades to their best friends’ children while you were there severely burning your midnight candle squeezing your brain just to memorize the letters of the alphabet. Second, well, someone you knew who cursed a lot of people, a nagger who shouted on people thinking that he has all the right to do so since he really believes that Opinion When power hits you in the head people are just a bunch of losers. And lastly, “the loser” someone who kept on entertaining that nagger to the point that he seemed to have no backbone at all. The examples above are up to you if you’d take it literally, but with these examples spawned three conclusions. First, no matter how hard one tries to upgrade himself or make something out of him, if the other person has lots of connections from someone who is in authority, he’ll win the bacon.Second, some people abuse their power by degrading others- thinking that what they are now is something that must be proud of- leading to superiority and self centeredness. Bear in mind that when belittled others, it doesn’t mean you have authority over them. You’re only showing the world that you don’t have any piece of values. Third, a person who makes a stand for what he believes in is a lot better than someone who just goes along with the current. In fact, abuse of power result to bullying, oral defamation, and public scandal. What we say or do has a ripple effect to others. We don’t have to curse or shout on people to impose rules or to gain respect. We are given the ability to speak, but it doesn’t give us the freedom to say whatever we want, regardless of our age, gender, or status in life. Knowledge, as we all know, can bring us to the spotlight. Being in the spotlight is overwhelming, but it is also in the spotlight that we are blinded and sometimes failed to be sensitive on certain aspects of our lives. Do not be blinded by the light. Let’s put intelligence in its proper place before power hits our head. Meek’s Mind By Ma. Katherine V. Cañon As I was watching a local news program, SOMETHING caught my attention. Something that would greatly affect most, if not all the Ilonggos. It is about the Iloilo airport to cater international flights initially to Hongkong and Singapore, by the last quarter of this year. This great development is just a clear manifestation that Iloilo City is indeed the next big thing. Imagine, among the airports in the country, only few are catering direct international flights. And we’re lucky that finally Iloilo belongs on the list. Starting to exceed the limits! Aside from being on the list to cater international flights, what advantages can we get from it First, since the primary purpose of international flight is to promote the region’s tourism industry, it only means that whenever tourists and foreigners visit Iloilo, they will be bringing income. And many tourists would mean more income. Second, it would alleviate the employment rate in Iloilo. With tourism industry, our BS Tourism and BS Customs Administration graduates will be easily employed because of the direct international flights which will bring foreigners here in the city. Thus, customs assistance is badly needed. All persons coming into the Philippines from foreign countries shall be liable to detention and search by the customs authorities under such regulations as may be prescribed relative thereto. Third, Visayan seafarers and overseas workers especially in Hong Kong or in Singapore could avail this direct flights with lesser expenses than taking flights from Hong Kong or Singapore going to Manila, and Manila going to Iloilo. This would mean comfort and convenience for them. But after all the advantages that I have mentioned above, the big question is, is the Iloilo Airport ready enough to handle this big change Just last month, 10 domestic flights were cancelled due to a malfunctioning electrical gadget which caused a power blackout that crippled the airport’s operations. How much more to cater an international flight Well, let’s see how high Iloilo can soar. 9
