November 13, 2006
President’s Report: Sherry Frost called the meeting to order for Misty Brazelton who
was out of town.
Faculty Report: Yvonne Anderson who has been teaching English for 13 years at
LRHS gave a presentation on the English Department.
Teachers meet on grade level and develop unit plans. These plans are modified for ESL
students by using cognates in questioning, etc. Currently under the English Department
we offer courses in Yearbook, Newspaper, Speech, Creative Writing, SAT prep and new
this year is Wilson reading and English I, a program piloted at Enloe HS. This course has
a goal to get students up to grade level. 45 minutes/day they are taught Wilson reading
and the other 45 minutes, English I by Joni Amerson.
Terrie Morris teaches 10 th grade Structured Writing to help improve writing skills before
the 10 th grade writing test.
The Freshman Academy classes attended a job and career fair at Triangle Town Centre
Mall.
Mr. Broer sponsors the Literary Magazine after school. All students can submit poetry,
art, writing, etc. to be published in this.
This year through the Cultural Arts program of the PTSA, Howard Craft, an author and
poet, is coming to school to work with students on poetry. He will be working with the
Creative Writing and Structured writing classes in December.
Some highlights from the various grade levels are:
9 th grade – Joni Amerson’s class took on personalities from To Kill A Mockingbird and
attended a BBQ in character. Ms. Pedersen’s class created a puppet show on Romeo &
Juliet.
10 th grade – Amy Moore’s class is doing a multi-genre research project. Nicole Sostre’s
classes are giving drama presentations with 4-5 minutes of dialog. A mock writing test
was administered and scored by all 10 th grade teachers to show the strengths and
weaknesses to the teachers of the class as a whole.
11 th grade – Nicole Sostre’s class has illustrated the classic, Huckleberry Finn for
children. Yvonne Anderson’s AP class is working on a visual definition persuasion paper
titled America is…

poets & musicians. Monica Wilkerson’s honor’s class is presenting a Shakespeare &
Renaissance Faire & feast.
The first issue of the Mycenaean just came out.
NHS inductions will be on Wednesday, November 15 th .
ESL classes are working on Family Trees and descriptive posters.
Administration’s Report: Dr. Gainey gave us an update on important events happening
in the school:
January 17 & 18 are exam days with January 19 th as a make up day.
Algebra I and English I are EOC’s for Freshmen.
There was a successful lockdown held today at the school. We also hold one fire drill
each month. Two fire drills are required within the first 10 days of school.
This year’s freshman class now must complete a Graduation Project by their Senior year
as part of the new graduation requirements. There is a plan in place to help each student
be successful in completing this task. We have 500-600 advisors and have already
trained all but 3 staff. There is a plan in place for all 4 years. Dr. Gainey will be
providing more information to Freshman Parents throughout the year.
On the intersection issue: Mainly speaking to junior parents, this is not and has never
been a school sponsored activity and won’t be. However, in order to prevent something
happening to one of our students and to help keep peace with our neighbors, the wall
between the dumpsters and the traffic circle is going to be OK’d to use for future classes.
This week’s conference game will be held at LRHS and the cost at the gate will be $7.
We do not set the gate costs for conference games. LRHS has never won a conference
championship.
Secretary’s Report: LauraAnn Murray presented the minutes from October. They were
reviewed and a motion was made to approve by Kim Jones. Charlotte Griffin second.
The minutes were approved.
Treasurer’s Report: Kim Jones presented two amendments for approval for the
Executive Board.
Amendment 1 – That all apparel orders submitted to date be paid, and no further orders
will be placed for sale this school year. This will allow for school spirit sales for the
remainder of the year with the inventory that we have in stock. IF there is sufficient

demand for items not in stock, the Executive Board may review the items wanted and if it
is appropriate, a pre-paid order may be placed.
The intent is to have apparel come with a budget amount for summer orders.
Amendment 2 – Since in budget planning, we removed the beautification line item, we
would like to add a line item in the amount of $500 to be added to the budgetary
disbursement as School Improvement.
Sherry Frost moved that both amendments be approved and Charlotte Griffin second.
All in attendance were in favor and the amendments will be added to the budget.
Kim also encouraged the school through Roy Cooper to update the critical intervention
kit.
NOT to merge the two school systems.
